The trilogy only recently being completed, previous attempts to study Bhardwaj’s work have been confined to chapters in books, with their analysis often relegated to the understanding of a greater theme about the industry as a whole, and hence this work intends to accord due space to Bhardwaj’s films by making them the centre of the discussion. The analyses of these films show that Bhardwaj’s work is torn between issues of authenticity, fidelity, and originality, often leading to what the thesis defines as “narrative crises” that are resolved with thought-provoking, at times problematic, but largely unique methods. Hence each of the three chapters, accorded to the respective film being discussed, focuses on the said crisis. By focusing specifically on these aspects the argument does not, by any means, intend to lessen or mis-portray the achievements, contribution and importance of Bhardwaj’s work.

She writes and has worked on a number of issues relating to women in terms of research, campaigns and organizing. Some of the areas of her interest are women and work issues, both in the formal and the informal economy, issues relating to women’s right to livelihood, organizing and struggles. She has worked with a large number of organizations in India and elsewhere. Z; ,, A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at Cambridge University St Catharine's College Cambridge, 1990 The British Regulation of Hinduism in North India, 1780-1900 by Katherine Prior (Summary) The thesis is divided into three main sections, each dealing with a different aspect of the religious administration of the British in India. No one section covers the entire period of 1780 to 1900, but they are assembledto give a chronological whole, with some overlapping betweenthem. The first section traces the changesin Hindu traditions of pilgrimage in north India, c.1780- Gaya 1840. Most of the information revolves around three main sites - Aflahabad, Benares and - partly as a result of sourcebias: the British had control of these sites from a relatively early date and much eighteenth-century information about the pilgrim industries there has been preserved. This section focuses on the religious behaviour of the Marathas: their patronage of the northern sites and the British interaction with Maratha royals and other elite pilgrims. It looks at the way in which elite pilgrims smoothed the way for non-elite pilgrims to make long and hazardousjourneys to the north, setting up traditions of relations with sites and priests that enabled non-elite pilgrimage to continue long after royal patronagedeclined in the nineteenthcentury. This section also considers the changing attitudes of the British to Hindu pilgrimage. Eighteenth-centuryofficers welcomed the advantagesinherent in the control of famouspilgrimage sites: the chance to advertise British rule to visitors from non-Company territories, the numerous occasions for pleasing political allies, the receipt of wealth from all over India.

S Research Scholar Department of English St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri Calicut, Kerala, India. Abstract There were many unwritten rules regarding what the subject matter of Malayalam films should be. The Malayalam film industry have managed to depict strife, violence, sibling rivalry, infidelity, murder and crime on the screen. But the filmmakers never had the courage to discuss the third gender onscreen. Dominant films portray homosexuality as indecent or immoral. Gay men and women are either shown as sadists, psychopaths or anti-social villains. Alternative sexuality is predominantly the object of ridicule and contempt in Malayalam film scenario. Malayalam cinema was always interested in depicting heterosexual couplings and the movie makers have never attempted to portray anything other than this on the screen. Anyhow there were some attempts from the part of film makers to show alternative sexualities, but the society has never approached it from a serious point of view. This paper tries a resistant reading of many of the established films in Malayalam industry by using the premises of queer theory.
