  • Storm Over Avi Cohen Organ Donation
Storm over Avi Cohen organ donation http://www.thejc.com/print/43346 By Anonymous Created 6 Jan 2011 - 1:35pm Israel news The refusal of Avi Cohen's family to give away the former Israel football captain's organs has reopened a debate over the religious objections to such donations. Mr Cohen, who also played for Liverpool in the 1980s, was hurt in a motor-cycle accident three weeks ago in the Tel Aviv suburb of Ramat Gan. He lay in a coma for nine days before doctors at Ichilov Hospital told his family he was clinically dead. Mr Cohen, 54, was a proud organ donor card carrier and had advocated that every professional footballer in the country should carry one. His family agreed that his organs should be donated before he was taken off his life-support machine but several so-called "miracle worker" rabbis objected. Friends say one rabbi claimed he had had a dream that Mr Cohen would come out of the coma within a week. Others told the family that taking his organs while his heart was still beating was murder according to halachah. The family succumbed, even though potential recipients had been told organs had been located for them. Despite the rabbis' claims, Mr Cohen was declared dead the next day. Thousands of fans attended his funeral which began with a service at Tel Aviv's National Stadium. The small number of Israelis willing to donate organs has led to international black market organ rings. A number of MKs have now proposed a law that will recognise donor agreements as legally binding, preventing anyone acting against the potential donor's wishes after his or her death.

Mount Scopus College Foundation Annual Report 2018 2 Connected for Life President’s Report In 2014, I became President of the Mount Scopus College Foundation, with the knowledge that I was following in big shoes. I had two initial aims then that are becoming true today; namely to build an Endowment Fund for the Future, to secure the stability of fees for the next generation of parents and to renew the Lew Family Secondary School and revitalise the entire Gandel Campus. For the past four years, I have been working with School President Amy Hershan, Principal Rabbi James Kennard and the combined school leadership and Foundation Executive on the largest single transformation of the College since the move to Burwood in the late 1950s. This kind of development needs the support of our current families and our major donors, together with support from our major financial institution and both Federal and State governments. We have met with teachers on best practice classrooms, and architects, on how best to build around the 1,300 people who are on campus on any given day. We have an obligation to you, as our stakeholders, to get this major development right and we are glad to have your support as we get ready. The Endowment Fund for the Future was established in 2016 and, as you may be aware, we have an agreement with the College to deposit all bequests and a portion of our annual income into it. The investment committee, consisting of Foundation Vice President Stewart Baron, Sam Alter, Ruth Picker and myself are looking at a growing balance.

Making use of recent literature on the politics of knowledge and using archive material, we try to clarify the postures between what we call “universalists” and “pluralists” in three of the major research projects that shaped the Department: the Tensions project, the race statements of 1950 and 1951, and the program of technical assistance. We make the case that both “pluralism” and “universalism” involved a great deal of political maneuvering and strategy to advance national or professional purposes, and that therefore, neutrality could only be apparent. Acknowledgements I am most grateful to the UNESCO archives staff especially to Jens Boel, Mahmoud Ghander and Alexandre Coutelle. I would also like to thank Avi Cohen, Evelyn Forget and Tiago Mata for useful comments on previous drafts. More generally, I am also grateful to the participants of March, 18 th 2011 History of Political Economy seminar at Duke University where I had the opportunity to present an earlier version of this paper.
