Mount Scopus College Foundation Annual Report 2018 2 Connected for Life President’s Report

In 2014, I became President of the Mount Scopus College Foundation, with the knowledge that I was following in big shoes. I had two initial aims then that are becoming true today; namely to build an Endowment Fund for the Future, to secure the stability of fees for the next generation of parents and to renew the Lew Family Secondary School and revitalise the entire Gandel Campus. For the past four years, I have been working with School President Amy Hershan, Principal Rabbi James Kennard and the combined school leadership and Foundation Executive on the largest single transformation of the College since the move to Burwood in the late 1950s. This kind of development needs the support of our current families and our major donors, together with support from our major financial institution and both Federal and State governments. We have met with teachers on best practice classrooms, and architects, on how best to build around the 1,300 people who are on campus on any given day. We have an obligation to you, as our stakeholders, to get this major development right and we are glad to have your support as we get ready. The Endowment Fund for the Future was established in 2016 and, as you may be aware, we have an agreement with the College to deposit all bequests and a portion of our annual income into it. The investment committee, consisting of Foundation Vice President Stewart Baron, Sam Alter, Ruth Picker and myself are looking at a growing balance. To make a donation to the Endowment Fund, please call Marlo Newton on 9834 0033, or to get the right language for a bequest, go to: www.scopusfoundation.org.au/plan-your-will/ Last month, I attended my 30th reunion as an alumnus of 1988. Amongst our group we counted businessmen and women, professionals, entrepreneurs, even a Federal Treasurer! How lucky we are to be part of this community and to attend, and send our children, grandchildren, and now, great grandchildren to this school, where we remain connected for life. Hazak v’amatz

Mount Scopus Memorial College Annual Report 2018 13 The Momentum of Memory

I was writing a condolence note, recently, and included the words “May her memory be a blessing,” almost by rote. Knowing the person who had recently passed away, and that she told me of a planned bequest to Scopus, the phrase leapt out at me anew.

What do we really mean when we wish that? Our memory of them is not static; it moves with us, keeping us company, and Linguists would translate the Hebrew occasionally prodding us along, creating a zichrono or zichrona livracha most probably positive momentum to carry with us. as the phrase we would say in English “of blessed memory” but that seems too So, when we write “May her memory be a passive for the imperative and Jewishness blessing”, let us by all means offer comfort of this wish. 18 Back to the Future Executive Director’s Report

The first time I was here, I spent thirteen years walking through the gates, past the blossoming trees, and via the Middle Office. Thirty years later, after 24 years in fundraising and education, I’m back, seeing my old school from a wonderful new perspective. I’m grateful to David Gold and the whole Executive for their trust in me and for being so very supportive of our joint endeavours. I’m equally indebted to Rabbi Kennard, Amy Hershan and the College senior leadership for their warm welcome and backing of the role the Foundation plays in our school. It has been truly inspiring meeting with you and hearing your stories, especially your motivations for giving to the Foundation. One woman shared with me, as we were discussing a bequest, that her husband had abandoned her with little money and three children, that Scopus refused her offer to withdraw, replying that more than she needed her kids to be there and, that Mount Scopus needed her children. She made her commitment to Scopus that day in her heart and is now able to make it tangible. A man told me that as young parents they moved here from South Africa and found not only a school but friends who embraced them, and a community who celebrated with them, and consoled them when family was so far away. They are proud to add another chapter to the Scopus story. A business maven flies around the world, has seen all kinds of Jewish schools and communities and knows Scopus to be among the very best. If we haven’t caught up yet, please call me or come by when you’re in the neighbourhood. If nothing else, you’ll get to share the same rush of joy I feel looking out on the quad at lunchtime, seeing the students playing or talking or studying, and knowing that our efforts help make it possible. We have so much to be proud of and such a great track to follow. It’s good to be back.
