Kaip tik èia pirmiausia buvo prabilta apie lietuviø kalbà kaip kultûros, tautos vertybæ. Ðioje knygoje atskleidþiama lietu- vybës (lietuviø kalbos) katalikybëje esmë, pasitelkus poþiûrá, kuris iki ðiol nebuvo taikytas istoriografijoje: religinio gyvenimo pakilimas Þe- maièiø vyskupijoje XIX a. 57-ajame deðimtmetyje ir lietuvybë katali- kybëje analizuojama kaip sudëtinë Vakarø Europos Katalikø baþny- èios atsinaujinimo dalis. XIX a. 2-ajame deðimtmetyje Vakarø Europoje suaktyvëjo kata- likiðkasis gyvenimas. Po napoleonmeèio ir Vienos kongreso (1814 1815) prasidëjusi Katalikø baþnyèios restauracija ir gráþimas prie tei- sëto valdymo principø sustiprino popieþiaus autoritetà, antra vertus, paskatino Apaðtalø Sosto ir valstybës bendradarbiavimà lygybës prin- cipu. Uþ popieþiaus institucijos ribø Katalikø baþnyèios atsinaujinimà 9 sukëlë Baþnyèios vidinës galios, kurias paþadino romantizmas, su- duodamas lemiamà smûgá Ðvietimo idëjoms, taip pat tolydþio ryðkë- janèios ultramontanizmo tendencijos. Baþnyèia siekë reabilituoti ir ap- ginti krikðèionybæ, iðsilaisvinti ið valstybës gniauþtø, atgaivinti religiná gyvenimà, parodyti didelius Baþnyèios nuopelnus kultûrai ir suderin- ti kultûrà su religija. Ji ieðkojo efektyvesniø bûdø religijai skleisti kei- èiantis visuomenës politinei, socialinei-ekonominei situacijai, pritai- kant katalikybæ prie liberalëjanèios bei demokratëjanèios pasaulio visuomenës. Ávairiose ðalyse Katalikø baþnyèios atsinaujinimas vyko skirtin- gai ir nevienodai sparèiai. Rusijos imperijoje, kurioje jos padëtis buvo specifinë ir komplikuota, jis prasidëjo po 18301831 m. sukilimo ir teigë katalikybës pirmenybæ prieð staèiatikybæ, ypaè teologijoje, kultû- roje ir krikðèioniðkajame ðvietime, skatino dvasininkijos profesiná ir intelektiná tobulëjimà, be to, reiðkësi naujomis ganytojiðko darbo prie- monëmis bei formomis, atgaivinusiomis ir suaktyvinusiomis sakra- mentiná gyvenimà ir baþnytinæ liturgijà. Knygoje keliama mintis, kad Þemaièiø vyskupijoje XIX a. vidu- ryje Katalikø baþnyèios atsinaujinimà rodë pastoracinës veiklos akty- vëjimas, susijæs su religine ðvietëjiðka dvasininkijos veikla, siekusia stiprinti katalikybæ valstietijoje vartojant liaudies kalbà (lietuviø kal- bà, o nuo 6-ojo deðimtmeèio, prie vyskupijos prijungus Kurðo guber- nijos parapijas, ir latviø kalbà) religijai skleisti. Vis plaèiau vartojant lietuviø kalbà katalikybës reikmëms, pra- sidëjo Katalikø baþnyèios lituanizacija. Nuo XIX a. 5-ojo deðimtmeèio Þemaièiø vyskupijoje lietuviø kalba ásitvirtino pastoraciniame darbe. Lietuviðkai vyko ne tik pridëtinës pamaldos, bet ir religinis pradinis liaudies ðvietimas, moralinis ugdymas ir valstietijos visuomeninës elg- senos reguliavimas krikðèioniðkøjø vertybiø dvasia. Pradëta gausiai leisti religinæ-moralinæ literatûrà liaudþiai. Stiprëjanti katalikybës ir lietuvybës sàsaja sustiprino lietuviø kalbos skverbimàsi ir á bajoriðkàjà kultûrà. Baþnyèiai buvo svarbu, kad aukðtesnieji visuomenës sluoks- niai suprastø lietuviø kalbos vartojimo naudà religijai, jà toleruotø, o 10 dvasininkija ástengtø ja bendrauti su ganomaisiais. Imta leisti konfe- sinei inteligentijai, apsiðvietusiems katalikams lietuviðka pamokslø, kitokia pastoracinë, hagiografinë, mistinë-asketinë literatûra, pasako- jimai apie vyskupijos, Baþnyèios istorijà. Lituanizuota katalikybë taip pat paskatino dalá to meto dvasininkijos raðtijos, atstovavusios tiesio- giai su religija nesusijusiai lietuviø kultûrai lietuviø kalba (lingvisti- kai, poezijai). Katalikø baþnyèios poreikiø paskatintas dvasininkijos darbas, susijæs su lietuviø kalba, lietuviðka raðtija, iki ðiol istoriografijoje buvo priskiriamas lietuviø etninës kultûros puoselëtojams, arba etnokultû- rininkams, kurie irgi vartojo lietuviø kalbà ir kuriø veikla istoriogra- fijoje vadinama lietuviø etnokultûriniu, arba lietuvybës puoselëjimo, sàjûdþiu. Negalima neigti, kad etnokultûrininkø idëjos veikë kai ku- riuos dvasininkus, taèiau negalima nepaisyti ir to, kad XIX a. viduryje dvasininkija lietuviðkai veiklai jau turëjo kità svarø motyvà. Kad et- nokultûrininkø lietuvybës tikslai, mastas, poveikio liaudþiai galimy- bës skyrësi nuo katalikybës poreikiø sukeltos lietuvybës galimybiø, rodo ðiø parametrø lyginimas. Etnokultûrininkø veiklos iðtakos siekia XIX a. pradþià, kada lietuviø kalbai dëmesá ëmë rodyti Lietuvos bajorija. Po Rusijos okupa- cijos ieðkodama dvasinës atramos svetimoje kultûrinëje terpëje, ji at- sigræþë á savo istorines iðtakas. Ðios bajorijos dëmesá lietuviðkiems dalykams dar skatino ið Vakarø plitæs romantizmas ir lyginamoji kal- botyra, paskelbusi lietuviø kalbà seniausia gyvàja indoeuropieèiø kal- ba, turinèia ypatingà vertæ mokslui. Atsirado bajorø, kurie suskato aukðtinti senosios Lietuvos praeitá, árodinëti lietuviø kalbos vertæ, sa- vo individualybæ reiðkë lietuviðkais raðtais. Europoje toliau vykstant kultûrinei integracijai, sklindant Johanno Gottfriedo Herderio tautos dvasios idëjoms, prasidëjus lenkø atgimimui ir bræstant socialinëms reformoms, prie lietuvybës puoselëtojø bajorijos atstovø prisidëjo ne- maþai ið valstieèiø kilusios inteligentijos. Dël to keitësi etnokultûrinës saviraiðkos turinys. Simono Daukanto veiklos metais (maþdaug nuo XIX a. 2-ojo deðimtmeèio pabaigos 3-iojo deðimtmeèio pradþios iki 11 7-ojo deðimtmeèio vidurio), ðalia Lietuvos praeities ir kalbos aukðtini- mo, lietuviø etninës kultûros puoselëtojai jau stengësi ugdyti naujo tipo, istoriniu ir etniniu poþiûriu savità Lietuvos kultûrà átraukdami á jà valstieèiø kultûros vertybes, taip pat sudaryti galimybes valstie- èiams ðviestis1. Taèiau sustokime ties savitos lietuviø kultûros ugdymo, vals- tietijos ðvietimo iniciatyvø apytakos sfera. Lietuviø etnokultûrininkø istoriniai, lituanistiniai raðtai buvo skirti iðprususiam skaitytojui ir aktyvino visø pirma bajorijos tautinio tapatumo konfliktà. Dialogo tarp jø ir liaudies tuo metu dar negalëjo bûti, nes juos skyrë didelë socialinë ir kultûrinë distancija. Historical overview An essential question has been repeatedly raised since olden times: is Samogitian a language or a dialect? Before the appearance of standard Lithu- anian, the concept of the Samogitian language prevailed. Quite a few Samogi- tians wrote their works in Samogitian. The 19th c. boasts a particularly large number of such works. In that period the concern and efforts to create standard Lithuanian on the basis of the Samogitian dialect were particularly obvious. The language and the spelling of Dionizas Poška, Silvestras Valiūnas and Simonas Stanevičaus, all of them originally being South Samogitians, were oriented towards their native Dūnininkai dialect. Three of the most prominent Samogitians of the 19th c. — Jurgis Ambraziejus Pabrėža, Simonas Daukantas and Motiejus Valančius — employed the North Samogitian Dounininkai dialect in their writings. The creator of the standard Samogitian language J. A. Pabrėža wrote: “A Samogitian will never agree about the language either with a Lithuanian, a Prussian or a Latvian.” (Subačius 1996: 54) Juozas Čiulda, the author of the most solid grammar of the Samogitian language of the time, written in Polish in 1854 (Trumpi samprotavimai apie žemaičių kalbos gramatikos taisykles — “Brief Reasoning about the Rules of the Samogitian Language”) consistently used the concept of the Samogitian language, and at the end of his book affirms this by stating the following: “These are my speculations about the Samogitian language.

Eliot Borenstein New York University Virgil Krapauskas, Nationalism and Historiography: The Case of Nineteenth Century Lithuanian Historicism. Boulder, CO: East European Monographs, 2000. viii, 234 pp. Distributed by Columbia University Press, New York. Krapauskas' book-length historiographical essay*fills an essential spot in the cor- pus of Lithuanian historical writing. The appearance of ethnic nationalism in East Central Europe in the nineteenth century would change the politieal landscape in the twentieth. Krapauskas traces the appearance of this brand of identity formation in the historical works - professional, joumälistic and dilettante - in Lithuania during the century leading to independence in 1918. Krapauskas' monograph is solid despite persistent problems with intent and the- ory. Thus, he writes, "Historicism mediated between the prejudices of nationalism and the dispassion of historical research," using Maurice Mandelbaum's definition of his- toricism that an event could only be understood "in terms of the place it occupied and the role it played within a process of development." Presumably, Krapauskas' mono- graph should then trace this approach to history in nineteenth century Lithuania. It does not do so, except tangentially. Nationalism and Historiography is about the de- velopment of Lithuanian historical writing as part of the Lithuanian national awaken- ing. Krapauskas' approach, not his subject matter, may be historicist. Nationalism and Historiography is also conceptually tentative.

He is well known not only as a profound theologian, a talented musician creating hymns, a literary classicist and an initiator of Lithuanian dialectology, but also as a distinguished figure in the science of mathematics. The author of this article turns his attention to the mathematical legacy of this prominent Lithuanian character and aspires to reveal the circumstances that encouraged bishop Antanas Baranauskas to undertake research in mathematics, to describe the influence of his achievements in the science of mathematics, to show the incentives that encouraged him to pursue mathematical research in Lithuania as well as to emphasize his search for a connection between mathematics and theology.     Lithuanian Women in Arts and Culture: Behind the Superficial Equality Analytical Review Introduction This analytical review is prepared under the Creative Europe project “Wom@rts”. Women’s Equal Share of Presence in the Arts and Creative Industries”, aimed at highlighting and supporting the creativity of women from a cross-sectoral perspective, focussing on – and inter-linking when possible various sectors of the Cultural and Creative Industries (ICCs). The goal of the review is to reveal the current situation of women and their status in Arts and ​ ​ Culture, the major issues in gender equality as well as trends and opportunities in Lithuania (also within the European context), with recommendations for gender policy and further scientific research in the field. More specifically, the review focuses on three areas: (1) literature, publishing and comics, (2) cinema and audiovisual arts, (3) theatre, performing arts and music composition. The analysis is based on secondary (academic, cultural expertise, general and cultural media, etc.) sources, including Eurostat and Lithuanian national statistics, Eurobarometer and national surveys, culture related lists of personalities and awards as well as the insight of the review’s authors into the Lithuania specific factors, historical and cultural context, public discourse, media and everyday sexism regarding female role in Arts and Culture in the country. The review begins with a general analytical overview on the position of women in Arts and Culture in Lithuania, explaining statistical data and attitudes towards female artists while offering historical rationale behind them. Then it moves to the respective coverage of the three areas mentioned above and is finishes with conclusions and recommendations for public policy and scientific research.

The initiative of founding the seminary belonged to Mikalojus Manugevičius, the bishop of Seinai. The founding of the diocesan theological seminary was inspired by the desire to train clergymen for the pastoral work in diocesan parishes. At that time, the Tykocin seminary of the missionary monastery existed in the territory of the diocese of Seinai or Augustów1, but it was not capable of meeting the needs of the diocese. The most acute problem was that there were not enough priests who were good enough in Lithuanian to do pastoral work in Lithuanian parishes. Bishop Manugevičius realised it well. When visiting the Lithuanian part of the diocese, he observed that there were few Lithuanian priests in the areas where people knew only Lithuanian. The bishop realised the problem could only be solved by establishing a seminary under the church of the cathe- dral. With this matter he approached the official commission on religion and education. He insisted that a second theological seminary was a necessity and wrote that the residents of the districts of Marijampolė, Kalvarija, and part of Seinai spoke Lithuanian and there had to be a seminary for young Lithuanians2. The hopes that young people from Lithuanian parishes would enrol in the seminary were confirmed in the very first year. Creating the National Identity on the Polish-Lithuanian Borderland abstract The authors are discussing the shaping of the national identity of Polish-Lithua- nian frontier denizens, regarding the historical events of the 20th century. In the first part of the article, they present a brief historical sketch of Polish-Lithua- nian relations, putting significant emphasis on the moment of the Sejny uprising beginning, that is August 22nd, 1919. Reclamation of independence after World War I put both countries in a challenging position of building own national- ity image. Defining own territorial affiliation of the Sejny region spawned an exceptionally harsh conflict between Poles and Lithuanians, leading to the upris- ing. The results of these events echo in Polish-Lithuanian relations in the Sejny region to this day. The second part of the article is devoted to the presentation of the multidimensional and constantly created identity concept by Jerzy Nikitoro- wicz, as an introduction to considering the shaping process of identity among youth of the cultural borderland. The authors point to the fact how important it is to find a platform of dialogue for both parties. They explain selected activities regarding intercultural education, accomplished in local environments by the “Borderland of arts, cultures and nations” center animators in Sejny. In the two archdioceses and four dioceses were: 708 churches, 314 chapels, 37 monasteries, 85 convents, three archbishops, nine bishops, 1271 diocesan priests, 580 monks, of whom 168 were priests. Four seminaries had 470 students. There were 950 nuns. Nuns cared for 35 kindergartens, 10 orphanages, 25 homes for the aged, two hospitals, a youth center, and an Institute for the deaf-mute. On June 15, 1940, the Red Army marched into Lithuania; the independent government was replaced by a puppet regime.

On July 21,with the Red Army surrounding the assembly house, the new People's Diet "unanimously" declared Lithuania a Soviet Socialist Republic. On June 25, 1940, the Church was declared separate from the state, and the representative of the Holy See was expelled.
