Nicknamed the ‘White Egret Castle’ for its spectacular white exterior and striking shape emerging from the plain. Himeji is a hill castle, that takes advantage of the surrounding geography to enhance its defensive qualities. There are three moats to obstruct the enemy and 15m sloping stone walls make approaching the base of the castle very difficult. Formal elements Viewed externally, there is a five-storey main tenshu (keep) and three smaller keeps, all surrounded by moats and defensive walls. These walls are punctuated with rectangular openings (‘sama’) for firing arrows and circular and triangular openings for guns. These ‘sama’ are at different heights to allow for the warrior to be standing, kneeling or lying down. The main keep’s walls also feature narrow openings that allowed defenders to pour boiling water or oil on to anyone trying to scale the walls.

Skillen SYNOPSIS The Monklands lie east of Glasgow, across economically worthwhile coal measures, which have been worked to a great extent. Additionally to coal it proved possible to work a good local ironstone. Mushet’s blackband ironstone proved the resource on which the Monklands rose to prosperity in the 19th century. A pot pourri of minerals was there to be worked and their exploitation may be traced back to the 17th century. Estate feuding provides the first clue to the early coal working of the Monklands. In 1616, Muirhead of Brydanhill was in dispute with Newlands of Kip ps. Such was the animosity of feeling, that the latter turned up at the tiny coal working at Brydanhill and together with his men smashed up Muirhead’s pit head.1 It is likely that Muirhead’s mine had answered purely local needs and certainly if mining did continue it was on this ephemeral basis, at least until the mid 18th century. The reasons are easy to find, fragile local markets that offered no encouragement to invest in mining and a lack of communications that stopped any hope of export. In any case the western markets were then answered by the many small coal pits about the Glasgow district, including satellite workings such as Barrachnie on the western extremity of Old Monkland Parish.

We have H seen similar success locally, achieved by offering repair grants, providing advice in respect of other grant streams and of proposals to bring places back into use.     John Ness was a keen local historian with a large collection of papers, books, pamphlets, charts and letters about Kilwinning and district, but being before the days of computers and the Internet, collating and editing this booklet would surely have meant many long hours searching through piles of books and notes. It was originally published in 1967, no doubt as part of the Abbey Church’s 400th anniversary celebrations (albeit a year or two late if the dates are correct), and was one of only a few collected sources of information about the Abbey. Of course, it is now long out of print and only a few dog-eared copies exist in libraries, but now it is accessible to the public once more. To make it easier to read on a computer screen, it hasn’t been recreated in its completely original form, but I have more or less kept the same layout. I made a few minor changes, adding a few commas here and there to make the sometimes slightly awkward sentence construction easier to read. If something reads a little strangely to modern eyes, that was the author’s style. Also, I corrected a very few obvious printing errors, and standardised words and phrases that were in bold type for no good reason. Full- or half-page photos which were in the middle of the booklet are now placed at the end. This is not meant as an academic work, so if anyone reads a statement which they believe is inaccurate or just plain wrong, the mistake is not mine.
