By the close of the 19th century, it's estimated that less than 1,000 bison survived. We will learn the story of the bison at Deadwood. After Tatanka, the tour of Deadwood begins. Followed by the Crazy Horse tour. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear officially started Crazy Horse Memorial June 3, 1948. After gazing upon the “tower”, we will travel to Medora and spend two nights at the Rough Rider Hotel. Next, enjoy the Teddy Roosevelt Salute” Theodore Roosevelt comes to life in this vivid and rousing presentation. Learn about Theodore Roosevelt as Presi- dent, husband, father, soldier, hunter, and Badlands rancher. Roosevelt is portrayed by Joe Wie- gand who performs this role nationally, including a White House appearance for President George W. Bush. Dinner tonight at the Rough Rider Hotel Day Seven—Monday, August 31: Hold on to your hats folks! We are not done with the western experience yet. Tour Roosevelt National Park today and experience what our 26th President once did—When Theodore Roose- velt came to Dakota Territory to hunt bison in 1883, he was a skinny, young, spectacled dude from New York. He could not have imagined how his adventure in this remote and unfamiliar place would forever alter the course of the nation. The rugged landscape and strenuous life that TR experienced here would help shape a conservation policy that we still benefit from today. After touring the park, enjoy some free time to roam around in Medora. Dinner tonight— Pitchfork Steak Fondue—will be a true delight! Savor your steak as you overlook the pictur- esque Badlands from atop a bluff at the Tjaden Terrace. Don‟t get too full because the night is not over! Go behind the scenes of the Medora Theatre. Following the tour, enjoy the Medora Musical—take your seats in the Burning Hills Amphitheatre for a performance of the “rootin‟- tootinest, boot-scootinest” in the West,” Medora Musical. Set in the outdoor splendor of the rug- ged North Dakota Badlands, this professionally produced, high energy, western-style musical show is proudly dedicated to the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt. Day Eight - Tuesday, September 1: Today we depart Medora and travel through North Dakota to tour the Lewis and Clark Mandan Village. The village has a newly-remodeled Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center with state-of-the -art interactive exhibits and a new collection of artifacts, a new exhibit honoring North Dakota's family farms, and much more. Also, step back in time and visit the reconstructed Fort Mandan. Overnight at Fargo, North Dakota at the Radisson Downtown hotel. Lunch and Dinner included. Day Nine - Wednesday, September 2: This morning we will drive into Minneapolis for a city tour. Don‟t fret because “As long as the sun sets, there will always be a west!” Say goodbye to the historic sites, knowing that you can always return for another new exciting experience. D. R. Horne & Company THEODORE ROOSEVELT PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY PROJECT BRIEF Updated April 2020 Prepared for: Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation Prepared by: D. R. Horne & Company Table of Contents I. Introduction 3 II. Purpose of Project 6 III. Operational Goals of Foundation 11 IV. Principal Elements of Project 15 V. Attributes of Design 21 2 I. Introduction Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library: Project Brief Introduction __________________________________________________________ Project Summary The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation (“TRPLF”) was formed with the purpose of creating a Presidential Library and Museum for one of the most intriguing national figures in our nation’s history. The Badlands is a striking landscape that spoke to Roosevelt when he first visited in September 1883 to hunt buffalo. He returned not long after, seeking refuge following the deaths of his wife, Alice, and his mother, Mittie, on the same day, February 14, 1884. It was in the Badlands that Roosevelt grieved and healed as he pursued the “strenuous life,” transforming himself from a frail and underweight city dweller into a larger-than-life character, as he is popularly remembered today. TR himself credited his time in the Badlands as one of the foundational experiences of his life, declaring “I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota” and “It was here that the romance of my life began.” Medora has been chosen as the ideal location within the state to develop the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum (“the Library”) due to the strong association with TR. The main entrance to the National Park, which bears his name (“TRNP”), is located in Medora, providing visitors with direct access to the unique landscape of the Badlands, including his ranch.
