The RCEA however deviates in its church governance from Reformed/Presbyterian church polity principles ordinarily embraced by Reformed churches across the globe. The church judicial development of the RCEA has been influenced on the one hand by the mission agencies for example the Dutch Reformed missionaries as well as the Reformed Mission League and on the other hand by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA). The researcher assessed the Constitution of the RCEA in this dissertation against the Reformed/Presbyterian church polity principles (see Chapter 3 and 5). The research tries to determine to what extent the Constitution of the RCEA is grounded in reformed church polity principles, namely: a) Self-government under the sole headship of Christ, b) The limited autonomy of the local congregation, c) The denominational ties serve the well -being of the Church, d) The restricted power and responsibilities of ecclesial assemblies, e) The necessity and nature of Christian discipline, f) Right of appeal, g) The power of the major assemblies with regard to misconduct. Three phases of the church judicial developments of the RCEA can be discern, namely i. Dependency to “mother church” 1905-1963, ii. RCEA as semi-autonomous church 1963-1991, iii. RCEA move towards self-governance 1982-1992. The researcher proposes in the dissertation amendments based on Reformed/Presbyterian church polity principles, as well as provision being made of in reformed church orders from different contexts inter alia the Church Order of Dordt (1619), the church order of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands (PCN), the church order of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa (URCSA) as well as the church order of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) which the RCEA might take into account when the denomination embark on the drafting of a new church order. iii Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za The researcher concluded at the end of the dissertation that the RCEA should make provisions in the envisaged church order regarding: The ordination of women, The authority and responsibilities of the ecclesial assemblies, The confessional basis of the RCEA, The necessity and nature of Christian discipline and the right to appeal. iv Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za OPSOMMING Gedurende 1944 het die Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk die Reformed Church of East Africa (RCEA) gestig. Kerkregtelik wyk die RCEA van die Gereformeerde / Presbiteriaanse kerkregbeginsels af wat gewoonlik met Gereformeerde kerke dwarsdeur die wêreld geassosieer word. Die kerkgeregtelike ontwikkeling van die RCEA word aan die een kant deur die sendelinge van die Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk asook die Gereformeerde Sendingbond beïnvloed en aan die anderkant word dit deur die Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) beïnvloed. Die Grondwet van die RCEA word in hierdie verhandeling teen die beginsels van Gereformeerde / Presbiteriaanse kerkreg geëvalueer (vergelyk hoofstukke 3 en 5). Die navorsing poog vas te stel in welke mate die Grondwet van die RCEA op die volgende gereformeerde kerkregtelike beginsels geskoei is al dan nie, naamlik: a) Selfregering onder die hoofskap van Christus, b) Die beperkte outonomie van die plaaslike gemeente, c) Die kerkverband dien die welsyn van die Kerk, d) Die beperkte gesag en verantwoordelikhede van kerklike gemeentes, e) Die noodsaaklikheid en aard van Christelike dissipline, f) Die appèlreg, g) Die mag van die meerdere vergaderings met betrekking tot wangedrag. Die kerkregtelike ontwikkeling van die RCEA kan in drie fases onderskei word, naamlik a) Die afhanklikheid aan "moederkerk" 1905-1963, b) Die RCEA as semi-outonome kerk 1963-1991, c) Op weg na selfbestuur 1982-1992. Die navorser maak in die verhandeling voorstelle, geskoei op Gereformeerde kerkregbeginsels asook op kerkordes van gereformeerde kerke uit verskillende kontekste onder andere die kerkorde van Dordt (1619), die kerkorde van die Protestantse Kerk in Nederland (PKN), die kerkorde van die Verenigende Gereformeerde Kerk in Suider Afrika (VGKSA) asook die kerkorde van die Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk (NGK), wat die RCEA in ag kan neem wanneer die denominasie hul nuwe kerkorde opstel. v Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Die navorser konkludeer aan die einde van die dissertasie dat die RCEA behoort in die beoogde kerkorde voorsiening te maak vir bepalinge wat betrekking het op: Die ordening van vroue, Die gesag en verantwoordelikhede van gemeentes, Die belydenisbasis van die RCEA, Die noodsaaklikheid en aard van Christelike dissipline en die reg om te appelleer. vi Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS 1. Krapf, a German C.M.S. missionary, started his translations of Scriptures into Swahili, Galla and Kamba. The work of translation has since continued to go from strength to strength.     “The Development of Congregational Polity and Early Governance in Watertown, Massachusetts” Charter Day Talk - September 12, 2009 - Rev. Mark W. Harris Anyone who wishes to understand early town government and town meetings in Massachusetts needs to know about the form of church government that the early Puritan settlers described as, “One, Immutable, and Prescribed in the Word of God.” (1) The authority for their chosen form of Ecclesiastical organization was the Bible, and the Puritans set forth in the Cambridge Platform of 1648 that “the parts of church-government are all of them exactly described” there. Here was a sharp division between Puritan and Anglican, for the Puritan could not find in the book of Acts or the letters of Paul any reason to justify a hierarchal system of bishops, or cardinals, or popes. The Puritan structure of organization has typically been described as congregational polity, because the congregations were intended to be a reflection of the primitive Christian churches which were small cells of independent believers. (2) By 1648 nearly thirty years had passed since the first settlers had arrived in Plymouth. The Westminster Confession, a theological platform, had arrived in the colonies from England, and by and large, there was agreement among the Puritans in matters of faith. Fifty churches had been gathered in the four colonies - Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay, New Haven and Hartford. The Synod in Cambridge, which held its first session in 1646, was called by the General Court to formally structure the polity of the New England churches. Some of the English authorities had hoped to Presbyterianize the congregations, and while the theological agreement made it a fortuitous time to regularize church polity in the New World, the Puritans had no desire to capitulate to a system that did not, in their view, conform to texts from scripture.

    Religion in Africa The majority of Africans are adherents of the Abrahamic religions: Islam and Christianity. Both religions are widespread throughout Africa. These religions are often adapted to African cultural contexts and indigenous belief systems. It was estimated in 2000 that Christians form 45% of Africa's population, and Muslims forming 40.6%. A map of the Africa, showing the major religions distributed as of today. Map shows only the religion as a whole excluding denominations or sects of the religions, and is colored by how the religions are distributed not by main religion of country. Christianity Although Christianity existed far before the rule of King Ezana the Great of the Kingdom of Axum, the religion took a strong foothold when it was declared a state religion in 330 AD. Pinpointing a date as to when Christianity emerged in Ethiopia will always probably be a mystery. The earliest and best known reference to the introduction of Christianity was when the evangelist Phillip converted an Ethiopian traveler in the 1st Century AD from the Acts of the Apostles. Although the bible refers to them as Ethiopians, scholars have argued that Ethiopia was a common term used for encompassing the area South‐Southeast of Egypt. Other traditions have the convert as a Jew who was a steward in the Queen’s court. All accounts do agree on the fact that the traveler was a member of the royal court who successfully succeeded in converting the Queen, which in turn caused a church to be built. Rufinus of Tyre , a noted church historian, also has recorded a personal account as do other church historians such as Socrates and Sozemius.

    Polity Matters by Charles Wiley Coordinator, Office of Theology & Worship Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) The Problem with Polity I’ve heard a lot of snide remarks about Presbyterian polity lately. How we’re just so stuck on our government that we can’t get focused on Christ’s call to the church. The reason I am so aware of this chatter is because many of those remarks came out of my own mouth. But I have not been alone—I have heard such descriptions from seminary leaders, pastors, elders, new worshiping community leaders, and even, if you can believe it, by those serving in the councils of our church. Our polity, for so long a point of particular pride, is often a punching bag, particularly within our own communion. This situation is not due to our lack of trying to adapt our polity to the new situations we are facing. After a thorough-going re-write of the Form of Government, a revised Directory for Worship is coming to the Assembly this summer. I find both of these documents faithful and encouraging. Nonetheless, the cracks about our polity keep coming. These remarks often focus on specific practices of our polity in the various councils of the church, but they also concern the place of polity in our common life as Presbyterians. Even those of us who have a strong appreciation for the Presbyterian way feel trapped by our lived system of polity. This essay frames an argument for why polity matters and how it can enliven the church in faithfulness to Jesus Christ.
