Su quehacer pasa prácticamente inadvertido en el ámbito cultu- ral madrileño —se cuentan las críticas a sus actuaciones, como a las Lde muchos, es verdad, con los dedos de una mano— y su presencia en la propia institución que la creó y la mantiene no supera lo que podríamos llamar la obligación suficiente. Por causa del famoso ERE aplicado al Ente Público, su plantilla ha cambiado radicalmente y en ella hay muchas caras nuevas que revelan una plantilla joven y actitudes que muestran interés y ganas de agradar. Los aficionados saben distinguir entre las orquestas bien y mal encaradas y la de RTVE es de las primeras, y eso a pesar de contar con un hándicap no pequeño, como es el lugar donde celebra sus con- ciertos. En efecto, el Teatro Monumental, céntrico sin duda y relativamen- te bien comunicado, es un espacio vetusto, reformado con nulo criterio estético y técnico, de incomodísimo anfiteatro y con un aroma cutre que no invita ni a acudir a él ni a volver tras hacerlo por vez primera. Sólo el buen hacer de la orquesta puede animar a repetir la experiencia de acudir a tan poco agradable coliseo. Lo hacen sin embargo sus abonados, un público fiel, de una edad media de madura para arriba y que parece OPINIÓN encontrarse cómodo con una programación que no le ocasiona sobresalto alguno, aligeradas ya esas características de apertura a otros horizontes más arriesgados que solía ser norma en las orquestas de la radio por Europa adelante. La de la RTVE ha encontrado en Adrian Leaper un direc- tor que ha sabido gestionarla sin mayores problemas, con discreción, como pasando de puntillas, montando temporadas eclécticas y en general poco comprometidas, sin invitados de especialísimo relieve pero mante- niendo una dignidad y un buen hacer que nadie puede reprocharle. Lo que no quita que muchos de los habituales de la orquesta recuerden el enorme impulso que le diera a la misma su antecesor, Sergiu Comissiona, un maestro de los de una pieza. La ORSTVE necesitaría asomar la cabeza con mayor orgullo, estar más presente en la vida musical madrileña y española, como anuncia su nom- bre. Salir del Monumental sería un principio excelente, pero ¿dónde ir? No hay en Madrid otro espacio idóneo para una formación sinfónica y sus abonados que el Auditorio Nacional o ese Monumental abominable y el Palacio de la Música quizá se le quede pequeño una vez reinaugurado. El problema es difícil de solucionar pues ninguno de los gestores municipa- les, autonómicos o estatales en estos años quiso afrontar la construcción de un segundo auditorio que, de haberse llevado a cabo, hoy estaría, con toda seguridad, a pleno rendimiento. Pero, además, la OSRTVE —víctima de esa circunstancia— debe afrontar retos que la relacionen con su medio, como hace, por ejemplo, la BBC cuando ofrece —tras promocio- narlo con eficacia— las nueves sinfonías de Beethoven dentro o fuera de temporada y permite la descarga —que podría limitarse en tiempo y can- tidad o compartirse en otro formato con alguna casa de discos, incluso con la propia— vía su página web a sus oyentes. Ir más allá de los con- ciertos de abono, y no sólo con los ciclos de cámara o de jóvenes intér- pretes sino con la presencia activa en programaciones especiales de Radio Clásica y TVE —donde sólo ha adquirido carta de naturaleza en ese Canal Clásico que no acaba de labrarse una personalidad propia. Y, claro está, tener un plan de grabaciones que dignifique de una vez el sello RTVE Música, en el que tantos discos inútiles se llevan lanzados. Están los archi- vos pero también las novedades, las posibilidades de nuevos registros de música española que contribuyan a que la orquesta tenga una presencia hoy demasiado tibia. Strauss’ scoring is interesting and innovative; the orchestra numbers only forty or so players: strings and brass are reduced to chamber-music scale and the orchestration heavily weighted towards woodwind and percussion, with the result that it is far less grand and Romantic in scale than is usual in Strauss and a peculiarly spare ad spiky mood frequently prevails.

    NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XVIII, Number 1 April 2003 A PILGRIMAGE TO IOWA As I sat in the United Airways terminal of O’Hare International Airport, waiting for the recently bankrupt carrier to locate and then install an electric starter for the no. 2 engine, my mind kept returning to David Lodge’s description of the modern academic conference. In Small World (required airport reading for any twenty-first century academic), Lodge writes: “The modern conference resembles the pilgrimage of medieval Christendom in that it allows the participants to indulge themselves in all the pleasures and diversions of travel while appearing to be austerely bent on self-improvement.” He continues by listing the “penitential exercises” which normally accompany the enterprise, though, oddly enough, he omits airport delays. To be sure, the companionship in the terminal (which included nearly a dozen conferees) was anything but penitential, still, I could not help wondering if the delay was prophecy or merely a glitch. The Maryland Handel Festival was a tough act to follow and I, and perhaps others, were apprehensive about whether Handel in Iowa would live up to the high standards set by its august predecessor. In one way the comparison is inappropriate. By the time I started attending the Maryland conference (in the early ‘90’s), it was a first-rate operation, a Cadillac among festivals. Comparing a one-year event with a two-decade institution is unfair, though I am sure in the minds of many it was inevitable.     Britten epicentre — Issue 68, 1 November 2013 COMING SOON — LIVE PERFORMANCE IN NOVEMBER Concerts for the Benjamin Britten centenary come thick and fast this month, with the one- hundredth anniversary of Britten's birth on 22 November. The epicentre appears to be in Cambridge, UK (quite near to Britten's Aldeburgh): Mark Padmore, Stephen Bell and the Britten Sinfonia contribute Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal and the Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings on the birthday itself; the Escher String Quartet plays Quartet No 3; Florilegium and King's College Choir with Stephen Cleobury present Canticle II: Abraham and Isaac and Hymn to St Cecilia; James Gilchrist and Anna Tilbrook perform the Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo, On This Island and folksong arrangements. Amongst the other UK-based groups celebrating are Bene't Coldstream, Keith Maries and the Chiltern Camerata (Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings in Buckinghamshire UK); Canticum and Mark Forkgen (all-Britten choral programme in London); Adrian Partington's War Requiem in Bristol, featuring joint forces from Gloucester and Bristol, and Les Illuminations (Swinsian Ensemble and Justin Fung, in London). In New York City, Melodia Women's Choir contributes A Ceremony of Carols. There are more events at Britten 100, all co-ordinated by the Britten-Pears Foundation. Other notable live performance this month includes the National Theatre for Children, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Grant Cooper and Sara Brodie performing Gareth Farr's Sky Dancer in Auckland and Christchurch. In New York, St Luke's Chamber Ensemble presents the first New York performance of Crossroads by John Harbison; Experiments in Opera have programmed three contemporary operas in celebration of Hallowmas; Salon/Sanctuary Concerts presents Dowland's Europe: The Winds of Change with lutenist Hopkinson Smith and Music for Brunelleschi's Dome with organist Lucia Baldacci; there's Czech music from Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble conducted by James John.
