The Evolution of Modern Fantasy From Antiquarianism to the Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series Jamie Williamson palgrave macmillan x PREFACE some cohesion. On the other hand, this approach tends toward oversim plification and breeds a kind of tunnel vision. One area which that tunnel vision has largely eliminated from consid eration in histories of fantasy has been the narrative poetry, some quite long, of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: work that engaged similar subject matter, identifieditself with similar areas of premodem and tradi tional narrative, and was widely read by many of the writers of the BAFS Introduction canon. Another area, not neglected but needing some refinement of per spective, has to do with those "epics and romances and sagas": they are gen erally alluded to rather indiscriminately as stufffrom (vaguely) "way back Charting the Terrain then." But modern access to these works is via scholarly editions, transla tions, epitomes, and retellings, themselves reflectingmodern perspectives; to readers of two centuries ago, the medieval Arthurian romances seeing print forthe first time were as new as Pride and Prejudice. With a color cover that featured a sultry moll, a gun-toting cop, or a sneering mobster, it assured the reader that when he got the magazine back to his garage or basement, he would be entertained by the kind of delights not found in The Bookman or The Atlantic Monthly. And yet, for a moment in December 1932, a single article featuring the world’s first consulting detective elevated the standards of Real Detective to something approaching respectability. Starting on page 50, between “Manhattan News Flash” (featuring the kidnapping of little John Arthur Russell) and “Rah! Rah! Rah! Rotgut and Rotters of the ’32 Campus” (by Densmore Dugan ’33) is a three-quarter-page illustration by Frederic Dorr Steele showing Sherlock Holmes in his dressing gown, standing beneath the headline: “Mr. Holmes of Baker Street: The Discovery of the Great Detective’s Home in London.” Com- pared with “I am a ‘Slave!’ The Tragic Confession of a Girl who ‘Went Wrong,’” the revelations behind an actual identification for 221B seems posi- tively quaint. -

In 1959, Pat Powers was working in a secretarial position at Pepsi-International. She decided to become a stewardess and went to work for Capital Airlines. She flew on DC-3s, DC-4s, Constellations, and Viscounts. In 1960, Pat married Captain Ira Fargotstein, a fighter pilot. Pat retired then but Ira tragically died in a road accident only six months later, in February, 1961. Pat then returned to flying for non-scheduled airlines. While on a charter flight, she met Capt. Ray Poole at the Palace Hotel in Frankfurt. He suggested that Pat call Seaboard's Chief Stewardess, Jan Irwin, about a job, and she did. Pat flew for Seaboard from 1962 to until 1966, when she was furloughed. Pat then got a job managing the travel department at Columbia's Electronic Research Laboratories (which became the Riverside Research Institute). There, she met Donald Rothacker, an engineer-physicist, whom she married. In 1978, they moved to Fairfax, Virginia, where Pat owned and operated a travel agency for eleven years. In 2004, Pat's book about her airline career, White Gloves to Washington , was published. The dust jacket is shown below. In 2010, Pat published her second book, about her liver transplant, A Smile Never Hurts . Pat donated the proceeds to provide a scholarship for a girl from the South Bronx to attend school. Pat is survived by her husband, Donald; by her daughter, Marlene R. Harrison and her husband Michael; and her sisters Loretta Broughal and Margaret Kistinger. -
