First Corinthians 1 Corinthians 3:1-4:21: Paul and Apollos: The Meaning of “Apostle” Paul was the founder of the Corinthian church, and Apollos apparently followed him as a leader of the church not long after. While the author of the Book of Acts undoubtedly told the story of the early church with his own biases, it seems reasonable to suppose that his description of Apollos is trustworthy. “Now there came to Ephesus a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria. He was an eloquent man, well-versed in the scriptures. He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord; and he spoke with burning enthusiasm and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.” (Acts 18:24-25) We saw in reading 1 Corinthians 1 that the Corinthians were divided into groups based in part on the leader each group claimed for its own: “I belong to Paul. I belong to Apollos.” Others say “I belong to Cephas (Peter)” and some even apparently say, “I belong to Jesus.” It is unclear why exactly the Cephas party and the Jesus party (if there was one) differed from the Paul party, but we can make some guesses about those who followed Apollos. If Acts is right that Apollos was an “eloquent man” it seems quite possible that the Corinthians contrasted him with Paul, who preceded him. Paul says of himself “When I came to you brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words of wisdom. -

751 It is diffi cult to speak about Jeremiah without comparing him to Isaiah. It might be wrong to center everything on the differences between their reactions to God’s call, namely, Isaiah’s enthusiasm (Is 6:8) as opposed to Jeremiah’s fear (Jer 1:6). It might have been only a question of their different temperaments. Their respec- tive vocation and mission should be complementary, both in terms of what refers to their lives and writings and to the infl uence that both of them were going to exercise among believers. Isaiah is the prophecy while Jeremiah is the prophet. The two faces of prophet- ism complement each other and they are both equally necessary to reorient history. Isaiah represents the message to which people will always need to refer in order to reaffi rm their faith. Jeremiah is the ever present example of the suffering of human beings when God bursts into their lives. There is no room, therefore, for a sentimental view of a young, peaceful and defenseless Jeremiah who suffered in silence from the wickedness of his persecu- tors. There were hints of violence in the prophet (11:20-23). In spite of the fact that he passed into history because of his own sufferings, Jeremiah was not always the victim of the calamities that he had announced. In his fi rst announcement, Jeremiah said that God had given him authority to uproot and to destroy, to build and to plant, specifying that the mission that had been entrusted to him encompassed not only his small country but “the nations.” The magnitude to such a task assigned to a man without credentials might surprise us; yet it is where the fi nger of God does appear. -

The local prophecy has been literally fulfilled. The southern kingdom of Judah heard and heeded the prophet's warning and did not join with Egypt in order to be delivered from the Assyrian. The northern kingdom of Israel made the mistake of ignoring the prophet's warning, and they went into Assyrian captivity (see 2Kings 17:4). This is one time when the southern kingdom profited by the experience of the northern kingdom.1 This oracle (chap. 30) and the next one (chap. 31) center on the folly of attempting to make an alliance with Egypt to ward off the Assyrian threat. At this time Egypt was waning as a world power and could be of no real assistance to Israel and Judah in their fight against the strong Assyrian Empire. But a strong faction in Judah, rather than turning to God for protection, wanted to seek aid from Egypt.2 Chapter 30 can hardly be understood with out the historical context being well in mind. The great historical event of the defeat of the Assyrian army recorded in Isaiah 36-37 is predicted in these chapters in great detail. The historical background of chapter thirty needs to be well in mind, while reading it to understand the words of the chapter. -

Chapter 31 God, not Egypt, will defend Israel. v. 1 Israel’s plea to Egypt cannot help, but pleas to God can. v. 6-9 Israel will one day return to God and her enemies shall be afraid. Chapter 32 Messiah Comes. v. 1 Behold, a King shall reign in righteousness. v. 2 A very unusual man is foretold, with 4 distinctive attributes. Each Saturday, this guide is published with the hope that it will aid you in being transformed by the gospel and living daily on mission. This document is structured in two categories: weekend resources and weekday resources. Sundays we gather for Corporate Worship and sit under the teaching of the Word of God as we fellowship together. The first guide listed in the Table of Contents below, "Prepare for Worship," is produced to stir our meditation on the passage to be preached, causing us to prepare our hearts for the message on Sunday. Additionally, we have provided you with a basic outline of the "Sermon Notes" to guide your attention and participation with the Pastor as he works through the message. Furthermore, a set of lyric sheets have been added following the "Prepare for Worship" for your convenience as you join in worship through song on Sunday morning. A Sermon Discussion Guide and a Daily Worship Guide are provided for individual or household worship through the week. The focus of Monday and Tuesday is an opportunity to look back at the Scripture preached on Sunday. Each Wednesday we will read an Old Testament passage that connects to what is being communicated through our sermon Scripture. -

Greever is professor of New Testament at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ. He received his Ph.D. in New Testament from The Southern Baptist Theo- logical Seminary, and has authored several articles reflecting on Paul’s understanding of the relationship between faith and works, the nature of the church, and the intersection of faith and vocation in the Christian life. Introduction Evangelical Christians from various perspectives have wrestled with how the New Testament (NT) relates to the Old, and, more specifically, how the new covenant relates to the prior biblical covenants. Should the relationship primarily be cast in terms of continuity, such that the nature and structure of the new covenant are in essential continuity with the nature and structure of previous covenants? Or should the relationship primarily be understood in terms of discontinuity, such that the newness of the new covenant is emphasized? No doubt, such themes of continuity and discontinuity are located along a spectrum, but different points along the spectrum delineate some of the key differences among theological systems today. Page 1 of 7 Original Research The comforted comforter: The meaning of παρακαλέω or παράκλησις terminology in 2 Corinthians Author: In the Pauline homologoumena, παρακαλέω or παράκλησις terminology is used almost two and a 1,2 Reimund Bieringer half times (in 2 Corinthians even six and a half times) as frequently as in the remainder of the Affiliations: New Testament. In the first part of this article, a survey of the use of παρακαλέω or παράκλησις 1Department of Biblical Studies, Katholieke in the undisputed letters and its three major meanings was given: to request strongly, to Universiteit Leuven, exhort and to encourage or comfort.
