Abstract: A critical review of botanical nomenclature for Anemone patens L. is given based on a rigorous literature analysis. Complete morphological characteristics and karyology of the taxon are compiled using data from the floristic treatments of Europe and North America. The phylogeny of A. patens in relation to a variety of contrasting historical, ecological and evolutionary factors acting through the species range transformation and speciation is elucidated. Keywords: morphological characteristics, chromosome numbers, taxonomic considerations, origin, evolution Introduction Some plants, such as Anemone patens L. sensu lato from the buttercup or crowfoot family (Ranunculaceae), with very broad geographical range, highly expressed polymorphism, the existence of numerous transitional forms, convergent evolution, ability to cross and interbreed in a great variety of habitats, may become a nightmare for taxonomists. Arguably, A. patens is one of the most problematic taxa in the genus Anemone L., as far as circumscription and distribution are concerned, which was noted by many authors (e.g. ZÄMELS 1926; TZVELEV 2001). Taxonomic status of A. patens has been widely debated by botanists over a few centuries since the time it was first described by LINNAEUS (1753). -

Now is the time to pot up your divisions for our sale tables. Please use only soilless potting mix and remember to label every pot (common name and botanical, if known). The May plant sale will return to the Ithaca High School on May 14. Our tables/booth are located in the new gym, same as last year, exact location TBD, so look for us. Sale hours are 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (although we may sell out earlier). Set up is Friday beginning at 4 p.m. until about 7 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. You may arrive early Saturday to drop off plants and help complete the setup. This year we appreciate, if you can, to sign-up to help in advance. We most need people for set-up and clean-up. Of course, you are encouraged to jump in to volunteer at any time; there's always something to do. -

In this study, we performed a re-visitation study using historical and newly collected vegetation plots to explore the primary trends in the floristic, ecological, and structural features of Mediterranean Pinus mugo krummholz over past decades. The plant community composition over time (1992 vs. 2016–17) was analyzed by a detrended correspondence analysis followed by a statistical comparison of time steps and an analysis of the contribution of each species to temporal differences. Ecological and structural changes were analyzed by a permutational multivariate analysis of variance followed by a post hoc comparison. We observed relevant changes in the floristic composition, structure, and ecological characteristics of Pinus mugo scrub. -

These conditions are rather unfavourable for sexual reproduction of flowering plants. Apomixis, asexual reproduction via seed, provides reproductive assurance without the need of pollinators and potentially accelerates seed development. Therefore, apomixis is expected to provide selective advantages in high-alpine biota. Indeed, apomictic species occur frequently in the subalpine to alpine grassland zone of the European Alps, but the mode of reproduction of the subnival to nival flora was largely unknown. † Methods The mode of reproduction in 14 species belonging to seven families was investigated via flow cyto- metric seed screen. -

Two contrasted and non Glacial refugia exclusive hypotheses have been suggested to explain these hotspots of endemism: (i) those areas were glacial High elevation refugia, where endemism reflects survival-recolonisation dynamics since the onset of Pleistocene glaciations, (ii) Mountains those are high elevation mountain areas, where endemism was fostered by local speciation events due to geo- Speciation graphic isolation and harsh environmental niches, or by low dispersal ability of inhabiting species. Dispersal Here, we quantitatively compared these two hypotheses using data of species distribution in the European Phylogenetic uncertainty Alps (IntraBioDiv database), species phylogenetic relationships, and species ecological and biological char- acteristics. We developed a spatially and phylogenetically explicit modelling framework to analyze spatial patterns of endemism and the phylogenetic structure of species assemblages. Moreover, we analyzed inter- relations between species trait syndromes and endemism. We found that high endemism occurrs in potential glacial refugia, but only those on calcareous bedrock, and also in areas with high elevation.
