PAID ADVERTISEMENT PAID ADVERTISEMENT WHAT’S IT WORTH? GARNETS – A POTPOURRIOF COLOR, SPARKLE, VALUE Six years ago, a Tampa resident brought in a selection of estate jewelry. Two items caught our attention – the first, a large, fancy, vivid yellow diamond that we offered over $30,000 for. The customer was shocked because she had been told by a Tampa jeweler that it was a citrine and had very little value. She sold us many items over the next six years, but the second item from that first group was our favorite – a demantoid garnet and diamond-encrusted bug or roach brooch (which we call a B-roach, upper left). Most people think of garnets as inexpensive Bohemian red gems, which are collectible but not overly valuable. Six years ago, we offered her $3,000 for the bug brooch, but she decided to keep it. Recently she came back and asked us to sell it at our award-winning international auction. We told her a modest auction estimate would be $3,000 to $5,000, but it might sell for less. What’s it worth? Stay tuned for Part 2 of this story, coming out in three weeks after the auction is complete. The photo at right depicts the many shades of garnet. The large round one, a demantoid, is worth several thousand dollars. The oval in the center is a tsavorite green garnet, and worth several hundred. Smaller, loose garnets are worth a few dollars each; but when they are found in antique jewelry, they bring much more. It takes highly educated experts like the team of graduate gemologists at Old Northeast Jewelers to understand and identify the true value of these gemstones.
