It is reasonable to ask whether Polynesian voyagers traveled thousands of kilometers more and reached the Americas. Despite much research and speculation over the past two centuries, evidence of contact between Polynesia and the Americas is scant. At present, it is generally accepted that Polynesians did reach South America, largely on the basis of the presence of the sweet potato, an American cultivar, in prehistoric East Polynesia. More such evidence would be significant and exciting; however, no other argument for such contact is currently free of uncertainty or controversy.1 In a separate debate, archaeologists and ethnologists have been disputing the rise of the unusually complex society of the Chumash of Southern California. Chumash social complexity was closely associated with the development of the plank-built canoe (Hudson et al. 1978), a unique technological and cultural complex, whose origins remain obscure (Gamble 2002). In a recent series of papers, Terry Jones and Kathryn Klar present what they claim is linguistic, archaeological, and ethnographical evidence for prehistoric contact from Polynesia to the Americas (Jones and Klar 2005, Klar and Jones 2005). -

Ritual Remembrance: Freud’s Primal Theory of Collective Memory Taylor Schey In the fnal essay of Totem and Taboo, Freud infamously claims that civilization began wHen a band of brotHers brutally murdered tHeir fatHer. THis postulation leads Freud to conclude tHat “tHe beginnings of religion, morals, society and art converge in the Oedipus complex,”1 and, accordingly, most readers, regardless of their argument, presuppose that the text depicts a “fundamental oedipal revolt.”2 This is how Peter Gay characterizes the action of Totem and Taboo in his short introduction to the Norton Standard Edition, and this is how the text is generally re- membered. While we may forget the moves of Freud’s argument and the details of his historical narrative—not to mention the frst three essays of the book—we do remember that, according to Freud, in the beginning was the Oedipus complex. It is not surprising, tHen, tHat many readers Have felt Freud went too far with Totem and Taboo. Its publication incited anthropologists to attack the universality of the Oedipus complex;3 others have turned the tables on Freud and charged him with projecting his own oedipal guilt onto an imagined horde of parricidal sons;4 and most in the feld of psychoanaly- sis have come to disregard Totem and Taboo, in part because it threatens the validity of the Oedipus complex. As E. B. Spillius explains: “today the idea of the Oedipus complex no longer needs to be defended against rival schools of psychoanalysis, and the use of the Oedipus complex to explain the origin of civilization would do it more harm than good” (187). -

These were pre-statehood days. The university was still a small territorial institution (statehood came in 1959), and it is an understatement to say that the program had very humble origins. Subsequently, it has had a very checkered history and has gone through several distinct phases. These and the program's overall history are clearly described and well analyzed by Ms. Agnes Quigg. This working paper was originally submitted by Ms. Quigg as her M.A. thesis in Pacific Islands Studies. Ms. Quigg' is a librarian in the serials division. Hamnlton Library, University of Hawaii. Earlier in this decade, she played a crucial role in the organization of the microfilming of the archives of the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, Office of the High CommiSSioner, Saipan, Northern Marianas. The archives are now on file at Hamilton Library. Formerly, Ms. Quigg was a librarian for the Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu. R. C.
