Preservation Orders All Counties Preservation Orders 1st February 2010 All Counties National Monuments Service Seirbhís na Séadcomharthaí Náisiúnta www.archaeology.ie Disclaimer These data sets are based on records many of which date to the late nineteenth or early twentieth centuries. Research to clarify the number and exact extent of some of the monuments that are covered by a preservation order/temporary preservation order, is ongoing. Consequently, the information presented here should be considered as a work in progress and changes will be implemented from time to time. While every effort has been made in preparing this data no responsibility is accepted by or on behalf of the State for any errors, omissions or misleading statements on these pages or any website to which these pages connect. Information about the list of Preservation Orders The list of Preservation Orders is a list detailing all of monuments that have had a Preservation Order or a Temporary Preservation Order placed on them. There are 558 sites entered onto the list of Preservation Orders. Format of the list The list is made up of a number of columns detailing what is covered by the Preservation Order/Temporary Preservation Order, where the Preservation Order/Temporary Preservation Order is located, the date and number of the Preservation Order. PO Number: Each Preservation Order is given a number, the number is usually written as 1/2001, 2/2001 etc. PO Date: The date the Preservation Order/Temporary Preservation Order came into effect. Temporary Preservation Orders are only valid for a period of 6 months after they have been signed in some cases they are orders revoking Preservation Orders and Temporary Preservation Orders. PO Description: This identifies the type of monument covered by the Preservation Order/temporary Preservation Order e.g. castle, church, passage tomb cemetery, etc. The terminology used does not strictly follow the classification of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) e.g. the term ‘ringfort’ is used for earthen forts and ‘cashel’ is used for stone forts. Townland: The townland names used are in accordance with those used by the Ordnance Survey. If a monument extends over more than one townland, all townlands will be listed. County: The county in which the monument is situated. SMR Number: Each monument is entered in the Record of Monuments and Places (RMP) as established under Section 12 of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994. A unique identifying number is assigned to each monument and place in the record. The SMR number provides the link to the records of the Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) which contains further information on the monument in question. • THE BIRDS of IRELAND. Order PASSERES. Family TURDIDAE
THE BIRDS OF IRELAND. Order PASSERES. Family TURDIDAE Subfamily TURDINNAE THE MISTLE-THRUSH. Turdus viscivorus, Linnæus. Though now resident, common, and widely distributed, this bird was apparently unknown in Ireland before the nineteenth century. A Mistle-Thrush, shot early in 1808 in the Co. Antrim was the first Irish example that Thompson had heard of during the first half of the century the spread and increase of this species was noticed throughout Ireland, the Western coast being apparently the last reached. Thus Mr. W. Sinclair remembers it in Tyrone in1820, but it arrived in Western Donegal ten years later. Up to 1860 it was unknown in Achill, but now breeds there. In Western Connaught it is scarce, but is believed still to be on the increase throughout Ireland in general. Flocks occur from June to the end of autumn, and may be seen in the same locality for days together. These perform local migrations, but disperse before winter. In November there is an immigration from Great Britain, though on a much smaller scale than that of the Song-Thrush or Blackbird. Some Mistle-Thrushes visit Rathlin Island in frosts, and Valentia is another winter resort. The Mistle-Thrush is a welcome addition to the song-birds of Ireland, from October onwards it may be heard in our mild climate; at first rarely, but more frequently and fully as each winter month passes, until the full song is delivered in February and March; while even frost and snow will not always silence it. I have heard one uttering its notes in short snatches between each triple stroke of its wings while it flew.

Private Sources at the National Archives Small Private Accessions 1972–1997 999/1–999/850 1 The attached finding-aid lists all those small collections received from private and institutional donors between the years 1972 and 1997. The accessioned records are of a miscellaneous nature covering testamentary collections, National School records, estate collections, private correspondence and much more. The accessioned records may range from one single item to a collection of many tens of documents. All are worthy of interest. The prefix 999 ceased to be used in 1997 and all accessions – whether large or small – are now given the relevant annual prefix. It is hoped that all users of this finding-aid will find something of interest in it. Paper print-outs of this finding-aid are to be found on the public shelves in the Niall McCarthy Reading Room of the National Archives.
