Understanding copyright and trademark laws When an author, musician, designer, or artist creates something, it is immediately protected by copyright or trademark laws and other people can’t use it or create something similar. Original works such as stories, music, pictures, plays, dances, sculpture, movies, and architecture are protected. 4-H members should use caution when working on a speech, display, or exhibit so you don’t use something that doesn’t belong to you.

4-H members can’t draw or copy someone else’s design, logo, words, or music without the permission of the original owner. That means, you can’t draw a logo (such as Ford or John Deere) and use it on your exhibit. You can’t create Mickey Mouse ears on your cake. You can’t draw a Disney princess. You can’t put SpongeBob image on your natural resource project exhibit board.

Think of it like this. You wouldn’t take your neighbor’s bike and ride it around to make your life easier without getting permission first. That would be stealing. When you take words, art, graphics, or photographs that aren’t yours but use like they are, that’s stealing, too. Copying them from the internet is the same as stealing them unless you are using a site specifically created for free use of images. For more information on what’s allowed, contact Judy at [email protected] and ensure you’re respecting the rights of others.

Hey there! The dates are locked in. The 2020 4-H Illini Summer Academies will be on June 21-27. This year we are looking for 12 current 10th, 11th, & 12th grade students to join the production team and help make the 2020 ISA an awesome experience. If you are looking for a leadership opportunity and would like to help run a cool event designed for teens just like you then consider applying to join our team. Production team members will meet twice face to face on campus between and the summer event. As a team member you’ll get training in leadership and youth development. You’ll work as a part of a larger team that will include adult volunteers and 4-H staff members from across the state. This is an awesome state-level leadership opportunity and will be a valuable piece of experience to include on a resume and scholarship applications. To apply you will complete an application where you have a chance to tell us what skills you bring to the table and how you would help make the 2020 ISA an even better experience than it was last year. You’ll need a couple of adults to recommend you as well. You can start now by following this link to complete the application. https://forms.gle/cypSMmmZ2E63sQig7

Good luck and we hope to see you this summer! Page 10 White County 4-H Newsletter—December 2019

The Farm to Table event held in October was a success and enjoyed by dozens of folks at the time. Now, the fruits of that effort are coming to harvest. Patrick Scates, owner of Scates Valley Irrigation, along with Jill Fowler and Malinda Nelson of Peoples National Bank have made a $5,000 check presentation to the White County 4-H program. The University of Illinois is expected to do a partial match on the donation which is expected to bring the total to more than $8,000. Amy McCarty, says the money will all go to White County 4-H and programming the University of Illinois provides. The event also was supported by Jamie Howard Jones, along with Beth and Tim Scates.

A special thank you to all involved from the White County 4-H!!

The U of I Extension Office will be closed December 24 thru January 1 to time with our families and friends.
