Course Title : CHINESE CINEMA

Summarize the need/purpose/reason for this proposal

This course will be important for students who plan to major in Chinese or in Asian Studies. Additionally, other students will be able to take this class to fulfill their General Education requirement in the area of Art or of Humanities.

As the Chinese population on campus continues to grow and general public interest in increases, Chinese cinema serves as an essential tool for understanding Chinese socio-economic conditions, cultural changes in Chinese society, and artistic expression among the Chinese population.

1. Identify major movements in the history of Chinese cinema and analyze major works in a specific period and of a specific director.

2. Compare and analyze Chinese social and cultural values expressed through the selected films.

1a. Identify major movements in Chinese cinema. 1b. Analyze major works in a specific period in the history of Chinese cinema. 1c. Name major film directors in different cinematic periods. 1d. Analyze the contributions of the major directors and their films to the history of film-making.

2a. Identify the moral values conveyed in the films. 2b. Analyze the family values and the social class divisions in the selected periods of the films. 2c. Analyze the ever-changing women's roles in the historical periods. 2d. Compare the shifting social values from different periods.

Methods of Instruction 1. Listening to academic lectures and presentations followed by instructor-guided analysis. 2. Note-taking during academic lectures and film viewing followed by peer and instructor's feedback. 3. Arrange small group discussions followed by peer and instructor's feedback. 4. Giving oral presentations followed by instructor feedback.

Methods of Evaluation of Student Performance 1. Short papers. 2. Group Discussions. 3. Comprehensive quizzes and final examination.

Assignments 1. Small group discussion In the week of viewing "Raise the Red Lantern", please discuss the following questions among your group: a. What can we learn about feudal nobleman's life in China? b. What can we learn about gender and family relation in traditional China? c. What are the signs of "Chineseness" in Raise the Red Lantern and how can we analyze them in a context which is international, cross-cultural, and beyond "Chinese"? Please put yourself into a group of four. One of the four is responsible to lead the discussion related to the questions above. It is expected that you will help each other by discussing the questions on your own in advance, and then share your thinking process with the class. Your group will be expected to submit the key points of the discussion in writing.

2: Short paper after viewing Watch a movie at Youtube named “Destiny (2014)”. This movie provides a good example of the main duties that women need to fulfill in traditional Chinese society. After viewing the movie, please complete the following two tasks: 1: Identify the multiple roles a woman could play throughout her life. Please include the following components in your reply: a. How should she serve her parents as a daughter? b. After she is married into her husband's family, what is her most important duty as a wife?

Why does the heroine insist on wearing it, knowing that her husband might not return? c. Provide your reasons for agreeing or disagreeing with her decision.
