Kelley’s Conversation w/ Steven Machat February 13, 2011 Steven confirmed that he visited with Cohen in 2007 regarding the film “Bird On A Wire.” When he went to see Cohen he wanted to discuss Buddhism. Steven was living with Semina who was Muslim. Cohen refused to discuss Buddhism and noted that he was now Jewish. “He introduced me to his groundskeeper” – Robert Kory. “He had Robert Kory in the background taping me.” “Leonard Cohen was so scared.” – he said “I found your film, Bird On A Wire.” He said “I have had it since 1990.” The reason Cohen gave for keeping this film rather than returning it to Steven Machat was “to keep it away from Avril.” [Avril Giacobbi] At this point Kory apparently begins coughing. The film is not given to Steven at this point in time. from [email protected] reply-to [email protected] to Kelley Lynch <[email protected]> date Mon, Feb 14, 2011 at 2:59 PM hide details 2:59 PM Re: Notice of Violations of Permanent Restraining (37 minutes ago) subject Order - Cease and Desist mailed-by gmail.com signed-by gmail.com Kelly, the one problem is kory. Leonard Cohen, Find Me, I Am Almost Thirty Always Full, It’S We Who Go Into a Lull
LEONARD COHEN, 106 FIND ME, I AM ALMOST THIRTY Amit Ranjan Some verses touch hearts Some touch other parts. Someone said to me That old man burns a hole Right inside your soul. He drags your pain out of your heart And then draws an anatomical chart Dissects you for fun And some lazy pun The old surgeon is so ruthless He leaves no scar He should have been dead Or at least toothless But look he’s laughing at the bar. Ladies and gentlemen, Mister Leonard Cohen. ister Cohen also has a sister Cohen: Esther Cohen. She passed away last year. I recently realized this, that she had passed away, and that Mthe writer Esther Cohen who’s very much around, is not the sister Cohen. I would have known this had I been a true Cohen fan, actively following the threads on the Leonard Cohen Forum. But I’m not. I am a lazy listener who listens to his songs, and tries indolently to write songs like him. I even wrote lazy emails to Ed Sanders, his manager, who lazily wrote back to me that he will try to show my poems to Leonard. Leonard never lazily read my poetry, or if he did, he never lazily wrote back to me. I have all the time to keep on writing, and I am sure he has all the time to know about the would-be Indian poet and indulge him a little. The Nature of Love in the Work of Leonard Cohen What Is Love
The Nature of Love in the Work of Leonard Cohen By Jiří Měsíc Published online: October 2018 http://www.jprstudies.org Abstract: This essay deals with the nature of love in the work of Leonard Cohen and its relation to Kabbalah, Zen Buddhism, Christian mysticism, and the alchemical wedding coniunctio oppositorum. Love is seen as pulsating between agape, the unconditional love of G-d and humanity, and eros, the insatiable desire for bodily pleasures. In both senses, it has certain accompanying attributes, according to the singer, explained by the words “chain,” “bond,” “wound,” and “suffering.” The literary persona of Leonard Cohen is viewed as longing for divine love, exploring prayer, solitude, and carnal love as a means of spiritual nourishment leading to the purification of the soul. Moreover, his work is characterised by a liturgical language, which he uses in order to glorify the most profane features of our human nature and to highlight the potential of the body to serve as an instrument to reach the sacred. About the Author: Jiří Měsíc (*1985), holds a Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Palacký University, Olomouc, Czech Republic. His main interest are the mystical branches of Abrahamic religions (Christian mysticism, Kabbalah, Sufism) and their echoes in popular literature and song, especially in the work of the contemporary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. Besides this, he is a published poet and translator of John Pass, Ariana Reines and Gertrude Stein into Czech. Keywords: Christianity, Judaism, Kabbalah, Leonard Cohen, love, mysticism, religion, song, Sufism What is love according to Leonard Cohen? “It is in love that we are made; / In love we disappear,” Leonard Cohen sings after having been abandoned by the “Crown of Light, O Darkened One” with whom he experienced a momentary union (“Boogie Street”). -

Jiří Měsíc Vedoucí práce: Prof. PhDr. Josef Jařab, CSc. 2016 The research and publication of this work have been made possible thanks to the direct support of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic for specific-purpose university research in the year 2015 at Palacký University Olomouc and thanks to the Institut français of Prague and the French Embassy in Prague which enabled the author to undertake two research stays at the University Paul-Valéry in Montpellier in 2014 and 2015. ABSTRACT This dissertation thesis arose from thinking about literary tradition as described by the Anglo-American modernists Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot. In their view, the tradition of European love-lyrics crystallised in the work of the medieval Occitan troubadours who were influenced by the cultural and political milieu of the contemporary Occitanie and whose work reflected the religious influences of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The main subject of their poetry was the worship of the divinised feminine character resembling the Christian Virgin Mary, Gnostic Sophia or the ancient Mother Goddess. -
A Conversation with Anjani by Frank Goodman (4/2007, Puremusic.Com)
A Conversation with Anjani by Frank Goodman (4/2007, Puremusic.com) I heard recently about an artist produced by Leonard Cohen with a major label release called Blue Alert. I got hooked on the mp3 I found of the title cut; the lyrics definitely seemed to be Cohen's, though the music seemed too jazzy. The email I'd received about it said she was his backup singer; so, one assumes, his partner perhaps, when a photo revealed her exotic good looks. It was all true, as it turned out; and the album, more importantly, was as beautiful as the single. As all things connected to Leonard Cohen have always seemingly been, it is a project quite unto itself. Any remotely jazzy chanteuse in this decade will get compared to Norah Jones (and, in some circles, Madeleine Peyroux) and here Blue Alert holds its own, especially by virtue of its independence from these artists. Coincidentally, Madeleine cut the song as well, though quite differently. I thought I was going to find a diva, but I was wrong. Anjani Thomas is a very friendly and engaging person, lovely in every respect. We had a very nice time, and I think the conversation and the clips will certainly lead the discriminating to pick up this first major release from an artist who could well become a fixture in that rarified realm of jazz pop where so few are allowed a spot. She's an accomplished pianist, co-writer and arranger, and a soft supple singer. And she's got presence for days. -
Mapping the Great Divide in the Lyrics of Leonard Cohen

Haslam College of Liberal Arts, Shantou University, China. Email: [email protected] Received February 28, 2017; Accepted June 10, 2017; Published June 15, 2017. Abstract It is generally accepted that Leonard Cohen’s songwriting changed significantly in the early 1980s, due to Cohen’s choice of a Casio synthesizer over a guitar as his instrument of composition. But this explanation begs fundamental questions of how we understand change and continuity in Cohen’s work across nearly five decades and fourteen studio albums. This study draws upon text mining and data visualization results which map Cohen’s lyrical vocabulary. Based on that data, it offers a reinterpretation of the Great Divide, the presumed departure in songwriting between Cohen’s first six and last eight studio albums. Keywords: text mining, lyrics, Leonard Cohen, Judaism. Did the songwriting of Leonard Cohen change significantly starting in the early 1980s? If so, how did it change? And why? I ask these questions because it is now commonly accepted that Leonard Cohen’s songwriting did. For the British daily newspaper The Guardian, in a well-researched and emotionally moving obituary for Cohen, Dorian Lynskey (2016) stated as fact that “Cohen’s resurgence began with a cheap Casio keyboard he bought in Manhattan, whose plinky presets granted him a new way to write.” This claim derives from the Cohen scholarship.
