They can be purchased from ANSI and IHS at https://webstore.ansi.org/ and https://global.ihs.com/ respectively, or they can be downloaded at no cost from the TSP website at tsp.esta.org/freestandards. The no-cost download is made possible by the sponsorship of ProSight Specialty Insurance. ANSI E1.6-2 – 2018, Design, Inspection, and Maintenance of Electric Chain Hoists for the Entertainment Industry This document is part of the E1.6 powered entertainment rigging suite of standards. It covers the design, inspection, and maintenance of serially manufactured electric link chain hoists having capacity of 2 tons or less and used in the entertainment industry. It is a revision of the 2013 edition. Volume 22, Number 9 Page 1 ANSI E1.14 – 2018, Entertainment Technology - Recommendations for Fog Equipment Manuals ANSI E1.14 applies to the user-instruction materials for fog-making equipment manufactured for use in the entertainment industry. In order to use fog safely and effectively, the user must have some general knowledge of the technology, have a clear understanding of how to operate the fog making system, and be aware of the potential hazards related to the use of fog, and particularly the system that he is using. This standard is designed to establish guidelines for manufacturers to provide to the user the necessary information required for the safe and responsible use of fog equipment. This is a revision of the 2013 edition, with changes made to clarify what information needs to be hard-copy with the equipment and what might on a website or in some other format. ANSI E1.35 - 2013 (R2018), Standard for Lens Quality Measurements for Pattern Projecting Luminaires Intended for Entertainment Use ANSI E1.35 describes a method for measuring stage and studio luminaire lens quality with particular emphasis on contrast and perceived projected image quality (sharpness). It also offers a way for presenting these results on a datasheet in a format that is readily understood by a typical end-user and that allows the end-user to directly compare lenses in a meaningful way. Without this standard, there is no way to describe how clearly a stage lighting instrument projects an image, other than by showing a person with the actual instrument and gobo. The download from the tsp.esta.org website is a ZIP file that includes an EPS graphic file of the test pattern in three common gobo sizes. This is a reaffirmation of the 2013 standard. ESTA Plugfest 20-23 July 2018 The ESTA Control Protocols Plugfest, the event where manufacturers and developers test their lighting products for network interoperability is scheduled to take place from July 20 to July 23 at the Marriott Solana in Westlake, Texas. ESTA and non-ESTA members are welcome to attend the 16th version of this event. The scheduled hours are 09:00 to 23:00, Friday the 20th through Monday the 23rd. Members of the E1.11 (DMX512), E1.20 (RDM), E1.31 (sACN), and E1.33 (RDMnet) task groups who authored the standards will be available to answer questions and help explain our protocols. More event information is available at http://tsp.esta.org/tsp/news/plugfest.html. A link for hotel reservations can be found on the TSP meeting page at http://tsp.esta.org/tsp/meetings/index.php. Further information is available from the event organizers at [email protected]. Event Safety Alliance Publishes an Interpretation of the Nevada OSHA Training Law The Event Safety Alliance prepared a set of detailed questions for the Nevada Occupational Health and Safety Administration’s Chief Administrative Officer, Jess Lankford. The answers clarify what AB 190 means for the entertainment industry, particularly touring shows. The full interpretation with links to further information can be access on the ESA's website at http://eventsafetyalliance.org/. Key points are: 1. In general, AB 190 applies only to ticketed “live entertainment” events, not private corporate events, trade shows, or conventions. “Ticketed” means events where admission is charged. However, the OSHA training requirements might be applied in some live entertainment cases where there is no admission fee. 2. A “worker” is defined as a person whose primary occupation is to “perform work on a site, including, without limitation, the construction, installation, maintenance, operation, repair, or removal of …” certain enumerated items related to the production of five types of entertainment. 3. Tours and festivals in Nevada that are open to the public for less than 15 days are outside the statute. 4. The 15-day clock begins when the employee starts doing tasks listed in the statute. 5. The clock resets after each touring event ends; the 15 days is not a cumulative total for all work within Nevada. 6. The party responsible for compliance is the worker’s employer. The criteria for determining whether a worker is an employee who has an employer or an independent contractor are essentially the same as for Federal OSHA. If someone is telling a person when to show up and what to do, they are an employee. If the worker gets to decide when to work and how to do the work, that person could be considered an independent contractor. Volume 22, Number 9 Page 2 Don't rely on this key-point summary.
