Many of Rumi's poems suggest the importance of outward religious observance and the primacy of the Qur'an. According to the principal editor of the journal, Leonard Lewisohn: "Although a number of major Islamic poets easily rival the likes of DanteShakespeare and Milton in importance and output, they still enjoy only a marginal literary fame in the West because the works of Arabic and Persian thinkers, writers and poets are considered as negligible, frivolous, tawdry sideshows beside the grand narrative of the Western Canon. But when they first arrive, they are turned back. The term Sufism was originally introduced into European languages in the 18th century by Orientalist scholars, who viewed it mainly as an intellectual doctrine and literary tradition at variance with what they saw as sterile monotheism of Islam. • Understanding the Concept of Islamic Sufism
Journal of Education & Social Policy Vol. 1 No. 1; June 2014 Understanding the Concept of Islamic Sufism Shahida Bilqies Research Scholar, Shah-i-Hamadan Institute of Islamic Studies University of Kashmir, Srinagar-190006 Jammu and Kashmir, India. Sufism, being the marrow of the bone or the inner dimension of the Islamic revelation, is the means par excellence whereby Tawhid is achieved. All Muslims believe in Unity as expressed in the most Universal sense possible by the Shahadah, la ilaha ill’Allah. The Sufi has realized the mysteries of Tawhid, who knows what this assertion means. It is only he who sees God everywhere.1 Sufism can also be explained from the perspective of the three basic religious attitudes mentioned in the Qur’an. These are the attitudes of Islam, Iman and Ihsan. There is a Hadith of the Prophet (saw) which describes the three attitudes separately as components of Din (religion), while several other traditions in the Kitab-ul-Iman of Sahih Bukhari discuss Islam and Iman as distinct attitudes varying in religious significance. These are also mentioned as having various degrees of intensity and varieties in themselves. The attitude of Islam, which has given its name to the Islamic religion, means Submission to the Will of Allah. This is the minimum qualification for being a Muslim. Technically, it implies an acceptance, even if only formal, of the teachings contained in the Qur’an and the Traditions of the Prophet (saw). Iman is a more advanced stage in the field of religion than Islam. It designates a further penetration into the heart of religion and a firm faith in its teachings.

  • An Investigation Into the Prevalence of the Hindu Yogas in Sufism
1 AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE PREVALENCE OF THE HINDU YOGAS IN SUFISM By Jalaledin Ebrahim M.A. Ph.D (c) http://jalaledin.blogspot.com Introduction With the recent proliferation of translations into English of the love poetry of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi and Hafez, Sufism, which is the esoteric or mystical dimension of Islam, has been widely considered, in the popular literature, a “ bhakti ” tradition, in which, “the aim of bhakti yoga is to direct toward God the love that lies at the base of every heart” (Smith, 1991, p. 32). On further investigation, a deeper appreciation of Sufism can be gained by comparing and contrasting the combinations (or lack thereof) of the Hindu yogas in the paths of several renowned Sufi Masters, such as Mansur Al- Hallaj (d. 992), Jalaluddin Rumi (d. 1273), Hafez (d. 1389), and Ibn al-Arabi (d.1240), who was known as the Shaykh al-Akbar, the greatest Sufi Master and the Seal of the Saints. 2 This paper seeks to explore the paths of these Sufi Masters within the framework of the four Hindu yogas and their relationship to the “stations of the heart” presented by a Sufi sheikh of the Jerrahi Order, Dr. Robert Frager, (1999) in “Heart, Self and Soul: The Sufi Psychology of Growth, Balance and Harmony.” Frager explains the contribution of Hakim al-Tirmidhi (d.ca. 932) to the theory of Sufism’s “four stations of the heart”: the breast, the heart, the inner heart and the innermost heart. Each of these stations houses a light. “The breast is the home of the Light of Practice of the outer forms of any religion.

  • The Man with Two Heads an Interview with Dr Robert Frager by Craig Hamilton
The Man with Two Heads An interview with Dr Robert Frager by Craig Hamilton "Two interviews? Sure. You could call it 'conversations with a schizophrenic,'" the voice on the other end of the line chuckled warmly, "because I'll probably contradict myself. When I'm wearing my Sufi hat, I often say terrible things about psychology." It was an early fall afternoon - the first day of school at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology (Palo Alto, California) - and Dr. Robert Frager, the school's founding president, was in good form. Having called the soft-spoken professor with a proposal I was almost sure would be met with at least some hesitation - to interview him twice about the same subject - I was glad to find my unorthodox idea landing on what seemed to be receptive ground. From his comments, it was clear that we weren't the first to have pondered the seemingly unbridgeable gap between the two sides of this human-potential pioneer's life. To the many students and faculty members of the progressive academic institution he helps guide, Dr. Frager is a dedicated teacher, a Harvard-trained psychologist and the author of, among other works, the psychology textbook Personality and Personal Growth. To the twenty or so members of the Redwood City, California, branch of the Halveti-Jerrahi order of Sufis, however, he is Sheikh Ragip, or "Baba," the man whose hand they kiss, whose words they revere and obey and whose life they seek to emulate - their spiritual guide. Prior to this issue, we had been aware of Dr.

Opening the Heart: Compassion in Sufism Robert Frager Opening the Heart: Compassion in Sufism Abriendo el Corazón: La Compasión en el Sufismo Robert Frager* Sofia University Palo Alto, USA Abstract This paper discusses the concept of compassion from Islamic and Sufi perspectives. Compassion and Mercy are divine Attributes, in Arabic ar-Rahman, ar-Rahim, which are the most commonly used divine Attributes. According to the Sufi Psychology we possess seven “souls,” or evolutionary stages of de- velopment. These are the mineral soul, vegetable soul, animal soul, personal soul, human soul, se- cret soul, and the secret of secrets Compassion begins at the human soul, the stage at which the heart opens. Compassion is a sign of mature human development. The human soul, secret soul and secret of secrets are located in the spiritual heart which is the source of creativity, wisdom, and spirituality. In Sufism opening the heart is an essential spiri- tual practice. Keywords: compassion, sufism, heart, Rumi, seven souls Resumen En este trabajo se analiza el concepto de compasión desde las perspectivas islámica y sufí. • Countering Extremism Through Sufi Practices
Countering ExtremismIPRI JournalThrough XIII, Sufi no.Practices 1 (Winter 2013): 97-105 97 IPRI STUDIES COUNTERING EXTREMISM THROUGH SUFI PRACTICES ∗ Air Cdre (Retd) Khalid Iqbal Abstract Accepting diversity as Nature’s way and a norm of human life is the key to resolve the ongoing ideological contradictions and socio-ethnic ambiguities, which are the main drivers of extremism in Pakistan. In order to fight the growing menace of religious extremism, sectarian divide and ethnic intolerance, there is a dire need to find a way of life which functions on the basis of inclusiveness and shuns exclusiveness. Sufism provides such a viable option. Sufis feel that “Allah” has created diversity, so we must respect it. “Do not give me the scissors! Give me the needle! I sew together! I do not cut apart!” is Sufism’s social doctrine. Key Words: Extremism, Sufism, Islam, Pakistan. Introduction ufism is Islamic mysticism. It is defined as “the inner mystical dimension of Islam.”1 Classical Sufi scholars have defined Sufism as S “a science whose objective is the reparation of the heart and turning it away from all else but God.” Darqawi Sufi teacher Ahmad ibn Ajiba describes it as, “a science through which one can know how to purify one’s inner self from filth, and beautify it with a variety of praiseworthy traits.” Classical Sufis were characterised by their attachment to dhikr (a practice of repeating the names of God) and asceticism.2 Sufism does not relate to any particular 3 religion. It belongs to all humanity. Concept of Sufism Generally, two origins of the word Sufi are referred to.

Following his death, the Order was split into the Nur Ashki Jerrahi Order and the Jerrahi Order of America, with the former reflecting a more “universalistic” orientation, and the latter a more “traditional” one. Which of the two more accurately embodied his legacy? In order to answer the question, the study draws from personal interview testimonies of Sheikha Fariha al-Jerrahi and Sheikh Muhamad Jamal al-Jerrahi (Gregory Blann), as well as from the teachings of Sheikh Muzaffer. This thesis demonstrates that Sheikh Muzaffer consciously fostered different interpretations of his teachings while also showing it was not his intention to have the Halveti- Jerrahi Order separated. Moreover, the study shows that he grew to embrace the more adaptive interpretations of his message over the more conservative, yet still legitimate perspective of traditionalists.

HTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies ISSN: (Online) 2072-8050, (Print) 0259-9422 Page 1 of 11 Original Research The Sufi order against religious radicalism in Indonesia Authors: This study aimed to analyse the contribution of the Sufi order in stemming religion-based 1 Maghfur Ahmad violence as a form of the Sufis’ response to rampant violence, extremism and religious Abdul Aziz1 Mochammad N. Afad2 radicalism. This study used a qualitative method in which the data were obtained through Siti M. Muniroh3 interviews, observation and documentation. Then they were analysed by using an interactive Husnul Qodim4 model. This study was carried out in three Sufi communities of the Sufi order Qadariyah wan Naqshabandiyah (TQN) in Indonesia, namely in Suryalaya Islamic Boarding School, Affiliations: 1Department of Family Law, Futuhiyyah Islamic Boarding School Mranggen and Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding School Faculty of Syariáh, Institut Jombang. The results of the study show that the three TQN orders have the concepts of dhikr Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) and love, which are internalised in the act of Sufism. The Sufi order has the doctrines of love Pekalongan, Pekalongan, of God, mutual love, discourse of moderation and tolerance towards religion and other Indonesia groups as the main instruments in the fight against religious radicalism. The resistance of 2Department of Tasawuf and the Sufis to religious radicalism shows that the Sufi order is cornered from attacks by Psychotheraphy, Faculty of formalist groups in religion. This fact reopens the historical archive of contradictions Ushuluddin, Adab dan between the two major currents of Islamic thought and movement, Salafi versus Sufi.
