35 36 Central Museum of Russian Railway Transport

The Central Museum of Russian Railway Transport is one of the oldest engineering museums in the world. It was established in 1813. Today the museum is an inde- pendent organization that nonetheless maintains close ties with the university.

It stores contain over 50,000 items that tell about transport science and railway facilities, about the development of railway transport in Russia. The museum’s exhibits are located in elev- en halls and are divided into three main parts: the birth of railways in Russia, the development of rail transport in pre-Rev- olutionary Russia and rail transport after 1917.

Exceptionally valuable are models of bridg- es, rolling stock, signaling and communi- cations equipment, albums showing the construction of rail lines, books published in the last century about railway technolo- gy, manuscripts and relics. Many museum exhibits are working ones; they demon- strate the operation of railway machines and devices.

Unique models of the museum were shown at many international and domestic exhibitions of the XIX and XX centuries.
