BARTLE (1899-1977) When Binghamton last hosted the N.Y.S.G.A. meetings in May of 1963, an unusual feature of our campus was that we had a geologist as president, Glenn Bartle. Since that time, other institutions (such as Cornell) have discovered the val ue of such a choice. Our campus probably is one of the few in the world that can claim to have been almost single-handedly built by a geologist, the same Glenn Bartle, deceased in September of 1977. In 1946 , Glenn took a job as dean of the two-year extension of Syracuse University in Endicott, New York. When the numbers of WW II veterans subsided and Syracuse decided to close their extension, it was Glenn Bartle who prodded and cajoled local business and professional people to support the retention and expansion of the former Syracuse faci lity into a four-year college , eventually to become Harpur College, the liberal arts coll ege of the fledgling State University of New York system. Glenn masterminded (and manipulated) this coll ege from temporary barracks onto a site of his choosing and supervised building the physical plant you are now visiting. Even more importantly, he guided the recruitment of the faculty for one of the fine public 1 iberal arts col leges during the early 1960's. He also successful ly guided Harpur College towards its emergence as one of the four graduate centers of the State University of New York. This done, Glenn "retired"to his geological profession and worked avidly as petroleum geologist until his death . Glenn built wel l, in part because of affection and loyalty he inspired in his coll eagues. He was a joy to be with, and we , and · "his boys" in the Geol ogy Department at SUNY-Binghamton , have lasting and affectionate memories of him. It is to his memory that this guidebook is dedicated. Coates President, New York State Geological Association It is with much pleasure that we once agai n host the New York State Geological Association annual field conference after an 18-year hiatus. During these ne arly two decades , much has been learned and published about the south-central New York region. This is in sharp contrast to the literature base that existed prior to 1963. In the preface to the 1963 guidebook, I commented on the scarcity of information, and this was reflected by the low number of field trips, four, for the occasion. Today , however, we are able to offer 11 trips which should whet the appetite of most geol ogi sts , wi th the exception of the unfortunate lack of local "hard rock" or structurally deformed terranes. Some of the increased geologic communications result from the location of the State University of New York at Binghamton campus in the heart of the region. Faculty and students at the University have added to the geologic information base of the surrounding area. Far from being provincial , however, 8 of the 18 field-trip leaders or co-leaders are "invaders" invited to guide you through the wonders of the region. This blend of homegrown and imported talent should provide a healthy mixture for obtai ni ng greater understanding of south-central New York. We are also pleased that two trips visit our close ne ighbor, Pennsylvania, one under the guidance of a member of the Pennsylvania Geologi cal Survey. Indeed , participants at this field conference are lucky; for the price of one admi ssion they may sample something of two states. ON Since the last meeting of the NYSGA in Binghamton (Coates , 1963), significant advances have been made in the refinement of correlation and environmental interpretation of Upper Devonian strata in south-central New York. One purpose of this article is to summarize the updated stratigraphy in this region and to review how the stratigraphy has been developed. The main theme of the article is the result of recent study in the Binghamton area (Fig. 1). By tracing thin units of dark-gray shale to the east of Binghamton, a stratigraphic framework was developed which permitted further analysis of environmental and sedimentologic rela­ tionships of the Catskill delta complex in the area. Through the demon­ stration of the dark-shal e framework and discussion of deltaic environ­ ments , a few of the interpretations are presented. The accompanying field trip is designed to illustrate a variety of deltaic environments and how they fit into the stratigraphic framework. N 1 . miles c 0 30 ' ! This has not only aided in the solving of some of the problems involved in correlating strata characterized by numerous facies changes but it has also faci litated the study of the interrelationships of the facies themselves. At present, four major dark-shale tongues are recognized in western New York: the Geneseo black shale, which defines (i n part) the base of the Genesee Group as well as the base of the Upper Devonian; the Middlesex bl ack shale, wh ich defi nes the base of the overlying Sonyea Group; the Rhinestreet black shale, which defines the base of the next highest West Fal ls Group; and the Dunkirk black shale, the highest of the major shale tongues , which defi nes the base of the overlyi ng Canadaway Group. These tongues , as wel l as a few intervening and overlying minor tongues, extend from the Ohio black shale which lies to the west of New York State (Fig. 2). ABSTRACT OF THESIS STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY OF THE TRANSYLVANIA FAULT ZONE IN BEDFORD COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA Transverse zones cross strike of thrust-belt structures as large-scale alignments of cross-strike structures. The Transylvania fault zone is a set of discontinuous right-lateral transverse faults striking at about 270º across Appalachian thrust-belt structures along 40º N latitude in Pennsylvania. Near Everett, Pennsylvania, the Breezewood fault terminates with the Ashcom thrust fault. The Everett Gap fault terminates westward with the Hartley thrust fault. Farther west, the Bedford fault extends westward to terminate against the Wills Mountain thrust fault. The rocks, deformed during the Alleghanian orogeny, are semi-independently deformed on opposite sides of the transverse fault, indicating fault movement during folding and thrusting. Palinspastic restorations of cross sections on either side of the fault zone are used to compare transverse fault displacement.

    Assessing the Petroleum Geology and Future Development of the Clendenin Gas Field in Kanawha County, West Virginia By: Jonathan Prevatte August 2020 Director of Thesis: Donald W. Neal Major Department: Geological Sciences Petroleum is one of the main sources for energy production in the US and is therefore important for the continuation of economic growth. Future development of petroleum resources in the US to meet supply demands is equally important. Understanding the controls on petroleum production will help in determining where and how to development these resources for maximum production. West Virginia is home to many gas fields and is underlain by one of the more prominent gas producing shales, the Marcellus Shale. The Clendenin Gas Field in Kanawha County is one of the historical gas producing areas found in West Virginia. This assessment is focused on the Devonian strata throughout the field including the Marcellus Shale. Using available geophysical logs, production data, and historic well records obtained from the West Virginia Geologic and Economic Survey (WVGES), cross-sections, isopach maps, and structure contour maps were created to give a visual representation of the subsurface geology across the field. Construction of the cross-sections and maps in conjunction with production and well record data aided in the identification of controls influencing production throughout the field. Applying the findings of this assessment to future production may reduce costs and improve yields of future petroleum wells. Results of this study indicate several options should be considered when planning for future production wells within the field. Target areas include the areas to the east of the field where formations tend to thicken.
