EDITORIAL “The most beautiful moments always seemed to accelerate and slip beyond one’s grasp just when you want to hold onto them for as long as possible.” - E.A. Bucchianeri So much has happened since our last issue of Whistling Teal in July 2019. The year has woven itself into a beautiful tapestry of interconnected events; enhancing the vibrancy of our University. These include SNU being chosen as an ‘Institution of Eminence’ and being the recipient of the NAAC, ‘A’ grade. These positive accomplishments reflect upon the strength of the entire community at SNU - from our students, professors, guards, librarians, DH staff and administrative personnel - worked in solidarity to make this a possibility. Our University has also been expanding. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SoHSS) now boasts of an Archaeology Laboratory in the D Block. A new Data Centre has been set-up to meet the increasing requirement of computing power, and offer high availability of IT services to the University. These are just a few of the year’s highlights, and the issue reveals several more. The year saw our students shine brighter than ever on all fronts; academic and extracurricular. The results of the 5th OUR Conference are a testament to the collaborative effort of students and teachers. It is truly a reflection of the University’s rigorous focus on research at the undergraduate level. It is worthy of note that students also won prestigious awards like BIRAC-SRISTI: GYTI 2019 and Smart India Hackathon. The flurry of activity has been great this year with student-led clubs also putting their best foot forward. The campus has witnessed many high-intensity talks, workshops, and electrifying events in the past six months. These include the HR Conclave, Business Conclave MOQSH 2019, TEDxShivNadarUniversty, and Spotlight 2019, to name a few. Read more about these events in the Campus Beat section. This is just one of the three parts of the Whistling Teal. The Campus Buzz section, on the other hand, takes the reader deep into the everyday happenings and special events of the University. These include the exciting trek at Hampta pass and the three-day intra-college fest Cascade. The Media section shall fill your heart with pride, a Whistling Teal features a brief collage of headlines that SNU made across national media. These are just a few things amongst the many that this edition of Whistling Teal brings to you. We hope you enjoy this short stroll down memory lane where we look back at that the unique assortment of experiences SNU affords. It has been a pleasure to compile these events so we hope reading it will be as enjoyable. The University is among the 20 shortlisted institutes that have been given the prestigious recommendation by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC shortlisted these institutes in a meeting on 2 August 2019. Shiv Nadar University Gets ‘A’ Grade Accreditation by NAAC Shiv Nadar University has been accredited with ‘A’ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), valid for a period of 5 years from 26 November 2019. The NAAC was established in 1994 as an autonomous institution of the University Grants Commission (UGC). It’s mandate is to make quality assurance an integral part of the functioning of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Data Center Inaugurated Mr. Shikhar Malhotra, Pro Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University; Executive Director, HCL Corporation; Vice Chairman, HCL Healthcare; Trustee, Shiv Nadar Foundation; and Trustee, The Habitats Trust, inaugurated the Shiv Nadar University Data Center to meet the increasing requirement of computing power, and offer high availability of IT services and uptime of mission critical applications. Shiv Nadar University ranked 3rd on Outlook-iCARE India Universities Rankings 2019 Shiv Nadar University has been ranked amongst the top three in the renowned Outlook-iCARE India Universities Rankings 2019. These rankings for Top 50 Private State Universities take into account different parameters, which make them comprehensive, and a strong indicator of the progress made by private universities. Faculty Student Ratio (FSR), Faculty with Ph.D. (FWP), Papers Per Faculty (PPF), Citations Per Paper (CPP) and Inclusiveness & Diversity (ID) are the parameters for rankings. With an overall score of 62.14, Shiv Nadar University ranked third on the list. Shiv Nadar University’s Central Library Wins ‘Aspiring Young Academic Library’ Award The Central Library of Shiv Nadar University has won the ‘Aspiring Young Academic Library (Non-Government)’ award at the WILEY Library Awards 2019. New Archaeology Lab Inaugurated The Department of History inaugurated the much talked about Archaeology Laboratory. The new lab was conceived of as a space where students will learn certain lab-associated archaeological methods, such as classification and documentation. The current display is intended as a teaching tool to introduce students to different types of artefacts and ceramics produced over time. This will also function as a space for curating already existing collections, as well as those that can be built with our faculty archaeologists and fellow researchers in future projects. Shiv Nadar University Receives ‘Partnership 2020’ Grant Shiv Nadar University is the first Indian university to get the ‘Partnership 2020’ grant. ‘Partnership 2020’ is a recent U.S.A.-India higher education research collaboration initiative to build research partnerships between Indian and the US institutions in key 21st century fields. Administered by the University of Nebraska, Omaha (UNO), the partnership enables the US universities to conduct joint research with their Indian counterpart institutions. As part of the opportunity, a ‘Dialogue on Joint Research and Internationalization’ was conducted at Shiv Nadar University on 15 July 2019. The delegates from the US Embassy included Prof. Patrick McNamara, UNO; Mr. Conrad Turner, US Embassy, Cultural Affairs Officer; Ms. Anubhooti Arora, US Embassy. As part of the discussion Prof. Patrick McNamara elaborated on ‘Opportunities in Partnership 2020’, which was followed by an experience sharing session by Dr. Harpreet Arora, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Shiv Nadar University. Dr. Arora has recently received a grant under the US-India ‘Partnership 2020’. The Dialogue was followed by an Open Discussion on ‘Internationalization, Joint Research, and Rankings’ led by Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University, and Prof. McNamara of UNO. Symposium On ‘Emerging Materials’ Shiv Nadar University and leading research institute, Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), jointly organized a symposium on ‘Emerging Materials’ from 8-9 November, 2019 in Bangalore. The symposium was attended by a team of faculty and Ph.D. students from both the institutions. The symposium’s chief patrons Bharat Ratna, Prof. CNR Rao, Linus Pauling Research Professor and Honorary President, JNCASR; and Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University, delivered the opening remarks. The seminar focused on research in the field of ‘Energy and Environment’ and ‘Soft and Biomaterials’. Highlights | 3 ACCOLADES Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University received the DAE (Department of Atomic Energy) - C.V. Raman Lecture award by the Indian Physics Association. Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh shared the dais with honorable President of India, Sh. Ram Nath Kovind during the keynote session at the 15th FICCI Higher Education Summit 2019 on 28th November 2019. Being the Co- chair, FICCI Higher Education Committee, Prof. Ghosh also delivered the Vote of Thanks at the end of the Summit. Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh was invited to attend the round table dinner discussion on the topic ‘The Future of University Research: Looking ahead to 2040’.
