Sponsors Media Partner 2 The Idea Remembering legendary beginnings provides us the occasion to redefine and make contemporary the history we set out to honour. We need to complicate the idea of origins and `firsts’ because they highlight some dimensions of film culture and usage over others, and obscure the wider network of media technologies, cultural practices, and audiences which made cinema possible. In India, it is a matter of debate whether D.G. Phalke's Raja Harishchandra (1913), popularly referred to as the first Indian feature film, deserves that accolade. As Rosie Thomas has shown, earlier instances of the story film can be identified, includingAlibaba (Hiralal Sen, 1903), an Arabian Nights fantasy which would point to the presence of a different cultural universe from that provided by Phalke's Hindu mythological film. Such a revisionary history is critical to our research agenda. -

COURSE OVERVIEW The Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA) prepares current and future aid workers with the knowledge and skills needed to respond effectively in times of humanitarian crisis and disaster. Our courses are borne of an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines academic theory with the practical experience of humanitarian professionals. The Humanitarian Studies program is multi-disciplinary and draws on a variety of academic and intellectual frameworks to examine and critique the international community’s response to situations of emergency, disaster and development. There is a natural tension in humanitarian studies between the practical implementation of humanitarian initiatives related to disaster or development; and, on the other hand, more introspective and academic attempts to understand and critique the effectiveness of these initiatives. Understanding how to effectively navigate this tension between theory and practice is at the heart of Fordham’s undergraduate program in humanitarian studies, and will serve as a guiding theme of this class. Throughout the course, we will work to try and form a coherent set of opinions on a) whether humanitarian action is a positive and necessary component of our global landscape, and b) if so, how our theory can guide our practice to help improve the efficiency and outcomes of humanitarian endeavors. -

Aboriginal Oral Traditions A History of Research and Scholarship1 The makers of Australian songs, or of the combined songs and dances, are the poets, or bards, of the tribes, and are held in great esteem. Their names are known in the neighboring tribes, and their songs are carried from tribe to tribe, until the very meaning of the words is lost, as well as the original source of the song. It is hard to say how far and how long such a song may travel in the course of time over the Australian continent. (Howitt 1904:414) In 1988 non-Aboriginal Australians will celebrate two hundred years’ occupation of a country which had previously been home to an Aboriginal population of about 300,000 people. They probably spoke more than two hundred different languages and most individuals were multilingual (Dixon 1980). They had a rich culture, whose traditions were centrally concerned with the celebration of three basic types of religious ritual-rites of fertility, initiation, and death (Maddock 1982:105-57). In many parts of Australia, particularly in the south where white settlement was earliest and densest, Aboriginal traditional life has largely disappeared, although the memory of it has been passed down the generations. Nowadays all Aborigines, even in the most traditional parts of the north, such as Arnhem Land, are affected to a greater or lesser extent by the Australian version of Western culture, and must preserve their own traditions by a combination of holding strategies. -
