Staff Seminar - Main streaming Inclusive Education Students Engagement with society as part of Social Involvement Programme EDITORIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Dr. Agnelo Menezes The Humane Factor Principal The topography of St. Xavier’s college is symbolic of the education it offers. The gargoyles, the intricate art MAGAZINE COMMITTEE work and the precisely-crafted windows are pictorial metaphors of the various delights that Xavier’s promises Ms. Rashmi Lee George (Convenor) to offer. A quadrangle enveloped by the splendour of Ms. S.P. Periyanayagi Indo-Gothic architecture opens into the sky beckoning Ms. Rashmi Mehta each individual to rise towards it. There are two ways Dr. Prasita Mukherjee of exiting this beautiful edifice: one is through the Dr. Dionysia Coutinho regular gates and the other is to fly upwards. We encourage you to soar into the sky. St. Xavier’s does not Mr. Roy Thomas believe in glass ceilings therefore sky is the only limit. Ms. Medha Taskar We at St. Xavier’s are a living culture teeming with Dr. Asha Naithani-Dayama action that overflows into the universe. The dynamism Ms. Alpana Palkhiwale in college is nurtured within the departmental-recesses. However, the action is not relegated to the college Students’ Editorial Board alone. We have criss-crossed space and time since 1869. ENGLISH SECTION Our trail-blazing ‘autonomous’ existence has been a result of creative pedagogy, courageous innovation, and Chinmayi Pilgaonkar (TYBA) meaningful collaborations. In 2016-2017, we carved our Shalmali Sankpal (TYBA) niche through various interventions both in academic Anant Venkatesh (FYBA) and societal spaces. Anwesha Das (FYBSc IT) Our greatest strength is our human resource. -

It was registered under the Societies Act in the then princely state of Mysore and the memorandum of registration was signed by the late Profs. V. Subramanian, V. N. Patwardhan and C. V. Natarajan, who were leading personalities in the scientific firmament during that period. The Society played a crucial role during the Second World War by advising the Government on the utilization of indigenous biomaterials as food substitutes, drugs and tonics, on the industrial and agricultural waste utilization and on management of water resources. The other areas of vital interest to the Society in the early years were nutrition, proteins, enzymes, applied microbiology, preventive medicines and the development of high quality proteins from indigenous plant sources. -

Immunology in India: an Emerging Story
cOMMentArY Immunology in India: an emerging story Kanury V S Rao Although immunological research is of only recent origin in India, it is nevertheless rapidly becoming an area of choice for young researchers in this country. he perennial appeal of immunology lies Tin the fact that it provides a window for almost every aspect of biological and biomedi- cal research. The plasticity of lymphocytes as http://www.nature.com/natureimmunology they switch among quiescence, active prolif- eration and various differentiation programs encapsulates the essence of both cell biology and the gene expression events that drive cell fate ‘decisions’. The structural and functional diversity of immunity-related receptors elicits questions in evolutionary biology, genetics, biochemistry, biophysics and structural biol- ogy. Although belated, this universe of excit- ing opportunities offered by immunological research is also rapidly being increasingly rec- Nature Publishing Group Group Nature Publishing 8 ognized by researchers in India. And with the present availability of resources and educated 200 manpower, the country is geared to mature © into an important contributor to this field. A historical perspective The history of medicine in India goes back to Susruta, the father of plastic surgery, is considered the originator of the rhinoplasty technique that remote antiquity, to a period between 4,000 has been practiced since 600 BCE. A detailed description of the procedure is provided in the Susruta and 900 BCE known as the ‘Vedic period’. Samhita. The procedure later spread from India to Persia and Egypt and, many centuries later, to Although early Vedic medicine represented an Europe and is still practiced today by some families in India and Nepal. -
