The two-species co- occurred on baits buried at 5cm but only M. prolapsa colonised baits buried at 10cm. Other species of insect were seldom recovered from buried baits regardless of the presence or absence of Muscina larvae. In the laboratory, both M. stabulans and M. prolapsa preferentially colonised liver baits on the soil surface compared to those buried at 5cm. Baits buried in dry soil were not colonised by either species whilst waterlogged soil severely reduced colonisation but did not prevent it entirely. Dry liver presented on the soil surface was colonised and supported growth to adulthood but if there was no surrounding medium in which the larvae could burrow then they died within 24 hours. M. stabulans showed a consistent preference for ovipositing on decaying liver rather than fresh liver, even when it had decayed for 41 days. The results for M. prolapsa were more variable but it was also capable of developing on both fresh and very decayed remains. Blood-soaked soil and dead slugs and snails stimulated egg-laying by both species and supported larval growth to adulthood. -

However, the concept is widely cited but poorly understood, and only a few forensic cases have successfully applied such a method. Surprisingly, this question has never be taken into account entirely as a cross-disciplinary theme. The use of necrophagous insects as evidence of cadaver relocation actually involves a wide range of data on their biology: distribution areas, microhabitats, phenology, behavioral ecology and molecular analysis are among the research areas linked to this problem. This article reviews for the first time the current knowledge on these questions and analysze the possibilities/limitations of each method to evaluate their feasibility. This analysis reveals numerous weaknesses and mistaken beliefs but also many concrete possibilities and research opportunities. -

Together with the families Anthomyiidae and Scathophagidae these constitute the superfamily Muscoidea. Overall statistics on recording activity are given by decade and hectad. Checklists are presented for each of the three Watsonian vice-counties 58, 59, and 60 detailing for each species the number of occurrences and the year of earliest and most recent record. A combined checklist showing distribution by the three vice-counties is also included, covering a total of 241 species, amounting to 68% of the current British checklist. Biodiversity metrics have been used to compare the pre-1970 and post-1970 data both in terms of the overall number of species and significant declines or increases in individual species. Carcass decomposition took longer periods under shade than on the exposed site . Four decomposition stages ( fresh, bloated, decay and dry ) were observed. A total of 164 arthropods were c ollected belonging to three classes : Insecta, Arachnida and Crustacean. I nsects formed 95.1 2 %, arachnids 1.22 % and crustaceans 3.66 %. Large numbers of arthropods were found on the exposed carcass than the shaded carcass . C alliphorids and S arcophagids were the primary colonizers observed breeding on the carcasses. The most abundant insects include Chrysomya albiceps (13.4 %) and Lucilia serricata (10.3 7 %). Other dipterans including Muscidae, Phoridae, Sepidae, Fannidae and A nthomyiidae were found during the bloated and decay stages. Famil ies of the coleopterans including; Dermestidae, Silpgidae, Staphylinidae and H isteridae were observed during the bloated to the dry stages and fed on the immature dipterous maggots and carrion remains. Hymenopterans were observed throughout the process of decomposition and played a vital role in carcass decomposition. -

Samples were taken at monthly intervals from May 2005 to April 2007. Hourly captures of adult fl ies (10:00 am – 04:00 pm) were taken at each sampling date with a hand net. The baits used were 250 g of rotten cow liver and 250 g of fresh dog faeces exposed in shaded and sunny areas. The entire sample accumulated 358 specimens. The number of specimens captured during the second year was higher than in the fi rst year. Muscina stabulans was more abundant at urban-suburban sites. Females showed signifi cant preferences for cow liver. We caught more specimens in shaded areas. The hourly activity increased toward the afternoon at the three sites. -
