The entire Gainesville music scene was built around songs: Top Forty songs on the radio, songs on albums, original songs performed on stage by bands and other musical ensembles. The late sixties was a golden age of rock and pop music and the rise of the rock band as a musical entity. As the counterculture marched for equal rights and against the war in Vietnam, a sonic revolution was occurring in the recording studio and on the concert stage. New sounds were being created through multitrack recording techniques, and record producers such as Phil Spector and George Martin became integral parts of the creative process. Musicians expanded their sonic palette by experimenting with the sounds of sitar, and through sound-modifying electronic ef- fects such as the wah-wah pedal, fuzz tone, and the Echoplex tape-de- lay unit, as well as a variety of new electronic keyboard instruments and synthesizers. The sound of every musical instrument contributed toward the overall sound of a performance or recording, and bands were begin- ning to expand beyond the core of drums, bass, and a couple guitars.

  • Message from TLC President John Sloan (‘98) [email protected]
Message from TLC President John Sloan (‘98) [email protected] Lonely One of my favorite things to do as a kid was to get to go visit my uncle, Larry Don Gilbert. Uncle Larry lived in the east Texas town of Kilgore, Texas, which was about 18 miles from Henderson, where I grew up. He was around ten years my senior, and he was my idol. Looking back, I appreciate how incredibly tolerant he was to let a little kid like me hang out with him and his friends. Uncle Larry was everything a kid growing up in Texas in the 60s aspired to be: he was an incredible all-round athlete, he had pretty girlfriends and, with both parents working from can to can’t every day, he had an absurd amount of freedom. One of my favorite stories about Uncle Larry was when he and three of his buddies were joyriding in the family station wagon. It was a 1960 model red Ford. They were all twelve years old. Uncle Larry was driving, though obviously he did not have a driver’s license or have per- mission to take the car out. While tooling down one of the main streets in Kilgore, they met a police car traveling in the opposite direction. Instead of acting nonchalant and driving by, they all ducked down until they drove past. Luckily the police officer was not looking at the seemingly-unoccupied car driving by and they got away. While Uncle Larry and I never got into any serious trouble, I became much wiser to the ways of the world.

  • GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.
