Cornish Word Search by Maureen The Wonderful Woods

A secret, quiet place where only me and the animals can go.

A paradise of carpets of flowers, mossy blankets on trees and webs of interwoven brambles that dingle dangle off arched branches.

A cosy peaceful nest up high away from everyone in the busy world.

A magical land to observe the animals playing in the sun.

A private space to think about the future.

A creative world where imagination comes to life.

Goodbye, Sir...

After 17 years as Head of Trekenner School, David Reardon is retiring. His final term has been unique in terms of education— the term school went online for the majority of pupils! I asked Mr R to share his memories (which I’m sure some of you will share!) of the school and Lezant Parish. Here is the first instalment...part 2 will be in next month’s magazine…

My first full day at school was in July 2003. I was invited to participate in the school’s 125th anniversary celebrations. We all dressed up in period costumes. The soon–to-become Windmill head teacher Mrs Carol Green, dressed as a 1920s flap- per and I as a pipe smoking, moustachioed, stern Edwardian, whilst the pupils played period games.

By the time my first term began I had spoken to people at the Horticultural Show about connections to Charles Causley. I was fascinated by personal accounts, in- cluding those of Julie Lambert, as a students of his, at the old National School. I was struck by the positive accounts of his life, nobody had a bad word to say about him. In fact a very engaging and entertaining teacher he must have been. I was keen for the pupils to read Causley’s stories and poems, as inspiration to create their own works of literature. I wanted dearly to meet Charles in person, and share with him the children’s work, and let him know that children were still enjoying his stories T. R. ROWE and poems. I enquired at Kernow House whether I could visit the great man but was informed that he was poorly and perhaps when he was feeling up to receiving TREBURLEY GARAGE visitors, at a later date, this would be possible . Sadly, he died a few days later, and I LAUNCESTON, CORNWALL was never able to convey the message that his stories and poems were still giving TEL: 01579 370348 much pleasure. Causley has remained a recurring topic at the school ever since. Our staff at this time included Judith Cayzer with Marion Allen in charge of Year R,1 and 2. Pat Ward with Sue Iremonger taught the older children. Liz Davies joined the team soon afterwards. Julie Lambert and Del Jones were already in situ in the office.

Lisa Sheppard also arrived, at one point, juggling two jobs, one here and the other VEHICLE REPAIRS AND SERVICING at Altarnun. She would teach in the mornings at Trekenner, then drive across MOT TESTING COMPUTERISED DIAGNOSTICS Moor to Altarnun to teach afternoon lessons!
