Prominent Personalities Yeshawantrao Chavan The freedom fighter, leader of 'Sanyukt Maharashtra Movement' and the first Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Yeshwantrao Balwantrao Chavan born at Devrashtre, Tal.Karad dist.Satara. Several times he represented Satara Parliamentary Constituency. Besides the politics he also wrote 'Krishna kath' and several other books. This soft hearted leader honored with several important responsibilities for country like Home Minister, Defense Minister and Dy.Prime Minister. Yeshwantrao Chavan Dr. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil The greatest educationalist and founder of 'Rayat Shikshan Sanstha' the dedicated largest educational institute in the state. He has honored by D.Lit. from Pune University on 5/4/1959. His work particularly for poor and backward class students through establishing hostels is the landmark in Maharashtra. He was related with several social and co-operative movements. Also took active part in freedom struggle. The head quarter of 'Rayat Shikshan Sanstha' is at Satara with 689 branches through out state and more than 4.42 lacks students taking education in several branches. Dr. Karmveer Bhaurao Patil Rajmata Sumitraraje Bhosale The daughter-in-law of Shrimant Chhatrapati Rajaram Maharaj (Abasaheb), the successor of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, 'Kulavadhu' Rajmata Sumitraraje Bhosale was respectable personality in the district. She was related with several social and co-operative movements. She was founder member of several institutes. The softhearted 'Rajmata' was died on 05/06/1999. Rajmata Sumitraraje Bhosale Khashaba Jadhav (15'th Jan. 1926 - 14 Aug. 1984) Born in very poor farmer family at Goleshwar Tal. Karad, the only Olympic Medal Winner for India till 2000. -

Version 2.0 Krishna Basin Preface Optimal management of water resources is the necessity of time in the wake of development and growing need of population of India. The National Water Policy of India (2002) recognizes that development and management of water resources need to be governed by national perspectives in order to develop and conserve the scarce water resources in an integrated and environmentally sound basis. The policy emphasizes the need for effective management of water resources by intensifying research efforts in use of remote sensing technology and developing an information system. In this reference a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on December 3, 2008 between the Central Water Commission (CWC) and National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to execute the project “Generation of Database and Implementation of Web enabled Water resources Information System in the Country” short named as India-WRIS WebGIS. India-WRIS WebGIS has been developed and is in public domain since December 2010 (www.india- wris.nrsc.gov.in). It provides a ‘Single Window solution’ for all water resources data and information in a standardized national GIS framework and allow users to search, access, visualize, understand and analyze comprehensive and contextual water resources data and information for planning, development and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). Basin is recognized as the ideal and practical unit of water resources management because it allows the holistic understanding of upstream-downstream hydrological interactions and solutions for management for all competing sectors of water demand. The practice of basin planning has developed due to the changing demands on river systems and the changing conditions of rivers by human interventions. -

History Module 5 TOWARDS INDEPENCE AND PARTITION (1942-47) LORD WAVELL’S PLAN Lord Wavell, the Viceroy of India, convened a conferences of different political leaders at Shimla on 25 june, 1945 with a view to grant more powers to Indians. At the conferences, the proposals of the Cripps offer of 1942 were renewed and Lord Wavell offered to reconstruct the Viceroy’s Executive Council. Lord Wavell made the following proposals; 1. The Viceroy’s Executive council would be reconstructed. It would wholly consist of Indian except for the Viceroy and the Commander-in-Chief. 2. Hindus and Muslims would be represented at par on the Viceroy’s council. 3. India would be given dominion status in the long Run. 4. The Constitution of India would be drafted by Indians themselves. 5. The governor-General would retain the veto power which he would use in the interest of the people of India. Lord Wavell’s plan was not acceptable to the Muslim League. It insisted that the right to appoint members from the Muslim community should entirely rest with the League. The congress apposed the proposal of the League on the ground that the congress represented both the Hindus and the Muslims.(In fact, Abdul Kalam Azad and Abdul Ghaffer Khan presented themselves at simle in the capacity of leaders and distinguished members of the congress delegation) The congress had agreed to Lord Wavell’s plan but the adverse attitude of the League to the plan made it inoperative, Judging by the subsequent developments, Wavell’s decision to abruptly abandon the british Proposals and dissolve the simla conferences implied an official recognition of the League’s monopoly to speak for all Muslim. -

Comprehensive Study Report on Krishna River Stretch (Dhom dam to Rathare weir, Satara, Rethare wier to Rajaram Bandhara, Shirol, Sangli) Submitted by MITRA (Mass Initiative for Truth Research & Action) 2014 Acknowledgement Maharashtra Pollution Control Board had assigned the project of Comprehensive Study on Krishna River Stretch – Rathare weir to Rajaram Bandhara, Shirol, Sangli and Krishna River Stretch – Dhom dam to Rathare weir, Satara as per guide lines of CPCB Dated 25th June 2013 to MITRA. The period of survey June 2014 to Nov 2014 was limited to complete a detailed study however actual observations, site visits, water quality analysis was carried out. Secondary data was procured from MPCB as well as statistical analysis was also used for completion of the report. There were limitations to observations during the rainy season as the sugar industries and distilleries do not work during this period and as such the report is not holistic. Shortcomings in the report if any can be brought to the notice and can be changed. The following people have given their valuable help during the completion of the report and hence it is essential to acknowledge them. CHAPTER 1 APPRAISAL OF THE PROBLEM 1.1 INTRODUCTION: India is the agrarian country. Agriculture is the main occupation. In ancient time when the study of the geography started; man was totally unknown about his surroundings. Study of Geography is connected with the arrangement of all things on surface of the earth. Geographer found many things and geographical phenomenon and their characteristics of different places on the earth. The geographer made analysis of thoughts and observations of the geographical elements. Geography is considered as a description of the earth surface and exploration of it, gradually emerged also discipline of the earth surface dealing with non active relationship. Land is resource capital of the country. Agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy seventy percent people of the population engaged in the agricultural activity and allied work to it. This is the most significant of human being. Agriculture is the main occupation of the rural area. The economic and industrial development depends on agriculture. Physical, social, institutional and technological factors are changeable in nature. It is true that there should be a change in agriculture with change in time for its progress and development. In this regard Agro Service Centres are playing very vital role in the pg. 1 agricultural development. The agricultural production depends on the agricultural implements, machinery and other essential inputs like hybrid varieties of seeds, chemicals like insecticides, fungicides, pesticides and weedicide etc. chemicals fertilizers, manures and technical know-how. Agro Service Centres are providing different agricultural inputs to achieve agricultural development. Agro Service Centres are an innovative idea and interesting experiment which holds the great promises to increase agricultural production through more use of fertilizer and wise use of other agricultural inputs. -

Joy and Suhas Paranjape (Assisted by: Raju Adagale and Ravi Pomane) Society for Promoting Participative Ecosystem Management (SOPPECOM) 16 Kale Park, Someshwarwadi Road Pashan, Pune 411008, Maharashtra, India Phones: 020-5880786; 5886542 Email: [email protected] SUMMARY This paper is based on a study of issues in co-management of water and energy in the context of the Tembu Lift Irrigation Scheme (TLIS) one of the many government operated high lift schemes that are coming up in the Krishna River basin in Maharashtra. High lifts conveyance options have been chosen for three main reasons: the demand for their share of water by the drought prone upper reaches of the Eastern portion of the Krishna valley that cannot be reached by other means, the `race' for the Bachhawat Award and the increasing tendency to let dam water into the stream to be picked up and lifted by users. The Atpadi taluka which falls under the TLIS is a special case because the SKSS, the organisation spearheading the agitation for equitable sharing of Krishna waters is also committed to a vision of equitable and sustainable prosperity and has succeeded through a series of agitations and negotiations to get the MKVDC to agree to the principle and the feasibility of its application to Atpadi taluka portion of TLIS. MKVDC and SKSS have jointly proposed to the government that the Atpadi portion of TLIS be treated as a pilot project for restructuring the scheme along equitable and sustainable lines.
