Cinema in Latin America Class code Instructor Details Guido Herzovich | [email protected] Class Details CORE Expressive Cultures: Latin American Film Spring 2018 Mondays 3:30-6:45pm, Wednesdays 3:30-5:00pm Office Hours Wednesdays from 3:15 to 5:15 Prerequisites This course meets twice a week, in one 1.5-hour session and one 3-hour session, which includes the screening of a film. The class, as well as the readings, will be in English, and the films will have English subtitles. Class Description Aimed at fostering a lasting engagement with both film culture and Latin America, this course is an overview of Argentine cinema and culture from the 1950s to the present. It offers tools and guidance for discussing and writing about film and culture, and encourages a personal engagement with the topics and issues raised by the films and their contexts: debates about film as art, political weapon, and/or entertainment, complicity and resistance under conditions of political repression, filmic forms of remembrance and of activism, and the complex relationship between aesthetics and politics, among others. Expressive Cultures is intended to introduce you to the study and appreciation of human artistic creation and to foster your ongoing engagement with the arts. Through critical engagement with primary cultural artifacts, it introduces you to formal methods of interpretation and to understanding the importance of expressive creation in particular social and historical contexts. As a part of the College Core Curriculum, it is designed to extend your education beyond the focused studies of your major, preparing you for your future life as a thoughtful individual and active member of society. -

Introduction to Latin American Cinema Sample Syllabus Course description This course offers students a cultural history of Latin America in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries through the study of its cinema. The course is divided into five parts, each one corresponding to a major cinematic period: silent cinema, studio cinema, Neorealism / Art Cinema, the New Latin American Cinema, and contemporary cinema. Learning objectives Students will learn to describe, analyze, and evaluate the intersection between form and content in a select number of important Latin American films, by situating them in contexts that are simultaneously national, regional, and global. Class-specific objectives are listed in the calendar below. Note to teachers: This course can be taught without having to include a unifying theoretical concept. However, I have found that by incorporating the theoretical framework of multiple modernities, classroom discussions on such topics as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, nationalism, populism, and historiography can be more productively framed from a distinctively Latin American perspective. New Constructions of House and Home in Contemporary Argentine and Chilean Cinema (2005-2015) Paul Rumney Merchant St John’s College August 2017 This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. New Constructions of House and Home in Contemporary Argentine and Chilean Cinema (2005 – 2015) Paul Rumney Merchant This thesis explores the potential of domestic space to act as the ground for new forms of community and sociability in Argentine and Chilean films from the early twenty-first century. It thus tracks a shift in the political treatment of the home in Southern Cone cinema, away from allegorical affirmations of the family, and towards a reflection on film’s ability to both delineate and disrupt lived spaces. In the works examined, the displacement of attention from human subjects to the material environment defamiliarises the domestic sphere and complicates its relation to the nation. The house thus does not act as ‘a body of images that give mankind proofs or illusions of stability’ (Bachelard), but rather as a medium through which identities are challenged and reformed. This anxiety about domestic space demands, I argue, a renewal of the deconstructive frameworks often deployed in studies of Latin American culture (Moreiras, Williams). The thesis turns to new materialist theories, among others, as a supplement to deconstructive thinking, and argues that theorisations of cinema’s political agency must be informed by social, economic and urban histories. The prominence of suburban settings moreover encourages a nuancing of the ontological links often invoked between cinema, the house, and the city. The first section of the thesis rethinks two concepts closely linked to the home: memory and modernity. -

SCMS 2017 CONFERENCE PROGRAM FAIRMONT CHICAGO MILLENNIUM PARK March 22–26, 2017 Letter from the President Dear Friends and Colleagues, On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Host and Program Committees, and the Home Office staff, let me welcome everyone to SCMS 2017 in Chicago! Because of its Midwestern location and huge hub airport, not to say its wealth of great restaurants, nightlife, museums, shopping, and architecture, Chicago is always an exciting setting for an SCMS conference. This year at the Fairmont Chicago hotel we are in the heart of the city, close to the Loop, the river, and the Magnificent Mile. You can see the nearby Millennium Park from our hotel and the Art Institute on Michigan Avenue is but a short walk away. Included with the inexpensive hotel rate, moreover, are several amenities that I hope you will enjoy. I know from previewing the program that, as always, it boasts an impressive display of the best, most stimulating work presently being done in our field, which is at once singular in its focus on visual and digital media and yet quite diverse in its scope, intellectual interests and goals, and methodologies. This year we introduced our new policy limiting members to a single role, and I am happy to say that we achieved our goal of having fewer panels overall with no apparent loss of quality in the program or member participation. With this conference we have made presentation abstracts available online on a voluntary basis, and I urge you to let them help you navigate your way through the program. -

The term criollo comes from the Portuguese crioulo, which was first applied in the fifteenth century to Portuguese peoples born in Africa, and soon afterward to African slaves born in Brazil.1 In Spanish America, the earliest use of criollo kept its root meaning (from criar, which means “to raise”) but was applied first to Africans born in the Americas, and only afterward to Spaniards born there as well.2 By the seventeenth century, the term’s meaning in Spanish had narrowed to refer only to the descendants of Spaniards in the Americas, but after independence it broadened to refer to a Eurocentric understanding of national histories and identities. In effect, by the middle of the nineteenth century, criollo was widely used as a stand-in for national hegemonic cultures through- out Spanish America. In Brazil, on the other hand, crioulo devolved, among other things, into a racial slur for descendants of Africans, while the French term créole came to refer to the African-inflected cultures and languages that emerged throughout the Francophone Caribbean Basin.3 Given the confusion that can arise from the polysemy of criollo and its cognates, I will limit my use of the term to refer to Europeanized cultures throughout Latin America, including Brazil. Global Film at Global Airlines Dina Iordanova, University of St Andrews Abstract: In recent years, since the introduction of individually controlled multichannel entertainment systems on-board, it has become customary to see a growing range of international cinematic selections being made available to airline passengers. The film selection is no longer dominated by Hollywood fare; average long-haul flights now feature films sourced out of Bollywood, East Asia, and Europe, as well as from other cinematic traditions—and the selection grows in size and in variety, especially on flights that bridge together far-flung parts of the world. It is an unprecedented situation—to see global cinema “live”, as it were, on board of global airlines—that turns the airlines into territories of conviviality, as no similar levels of diversity are found in the actual geographical territories of the countries where the airlines are based. Some research questions that arise in this context include: is it possible to speculate that the programme that airlines make available to audiences on long-haul flights is reflective of a specific understanding of diversity and cosmopolitanism that underwrite their choices? What message does the multifaceted and multinational entertainment menu of global airlines convey in a political context that is defined by backlash against globalisation and cosmopolitanism? Can one claim that global airlines are now one of the few platforms where global cinema is recognised and represented in its largest assortment? The Early Cinema in Scotland project is proud to welcome you to the University and to the city. Over the last three years, our work on various aspects of Scottish film culture before 1927 has been shaped and sparked by our connections to other researchers around the world. The HoMER Network has been a key point of convergence and we are very happy to host its 2015 meeting. Since 2004 the HoMER Network has functioned as an international forum for researchers working in the history of moviegoing, exhibition and reception, supporting a series of conferences, events, and publications. The conference has been co-ordinated locally by Maria A. Vélez-Serna and John Caughie, in collaboration with Liesbeth Van de Vijver at Ghent University/DICIS (Digital Cinema Studies).
