Wide Receiver+Training+Guide WIDE RECEIVER TRAINING MANUAL Watch training videos at www.bestfootballworkouts.com Wide Receiver Mindset • To be effective at the wide receiver position, a player must possess a combination of physical traits. Body control and agility are essential to a wide receiver’s success. The primary thing that a wide receiver must have is the ability to adjust. Adjust his body, adjust his route, adjust his footwork…on the fly. Anyone can run a 12-yard pass route against air and turn around. The real challenge comes when the wide receiver faces a defender who is one of the best athletes on the field and who is using the bump-and- run technique. Watch training videos at www.bestfootballworkouts.com Wide Receiver Play • Wide Receivers must have sure, soft hands. Wide Receivers must also have the ability to catch the ball in crowded situations. These skills define the receiver position. • As players move up in levels of competition, catching the ball becomes more competitive. The biggest difference between college football and professional football is the pressure from the defense, and the amount of open space available. • The professional level (e.g. NFL) is full of the greatest, smartest defensive athletes in the world, and the coverage in professional football is so good that nearly every ball is a contested ball. • Ball accuracy becomes extremely important at the highest level, because the coverage is so good. • Most receivers can run under a pass and catch it, but it takes a truly special player to be able to consistently catch the ball in crowded spaces. • The ability to catch the ball while being simultaneously hit is the measuring stick for sure hands. Watch training videos at www.bestfootballworkouts.com Wide Receiver Play (cont.) • Being a complete receiver means more than running fast or jumping high. Size and speed are great, but beating press coverage, running routes, reading defenses, developing chemistry with the quarterback, having reliable hands, run blocking, and run after the catch ability all matter. • A good wide receiver is able to find open spaces. The wide receiver’s job is to bring the playbook to life and be a full PlayMaker. Every route in the playbook has a certain depth and spacing on the field. The receiver’s job is to run the route at the proper depth and get open at the proper time in order to make a play. Watch training videos at www.bestfootballworkouts.com Wide Receiver Technique Catching • There are many important components of catching the football: • Focus on the front stripe of the ball. • Keep your body balanced as much as possible. • Extend your arms and attack the ball to cut down the flight time. • Relax your body. • Adjust to the ball. • Lock it away quickly. Cone 2 should be 10 yards ahead of cone 1. Cones 3 and 4 should be 5 yards to the right and left of cone 2. • Start next to cone 1 in a two-point stance. • Run as fast as possible to cone 2. • Run around cone 2 toward cone 3. • Run around cone 3 toward cone 4. • Run around cone 4 back toward cone 2. • Run around cone 2 until you are facing cone 1. • Run to cone 1. • Do 3 sets of 5 repetitions Watch training videos at www.bestfootballworkouts.com Release Drills RELEASES AND ESCAPES • It is imperative that receivers are able to release off the ball and escape man or zone defenders. • Various techniques are used while doing this: speed, quickness, fakes, power, and anticipation. • Receivers must also exhibit great hand-to-hand skills in tight areas. • Second and third level releases are as critical as first level releases. • When a defender sits down at 5 or 8 yards, you must have a plan. • Escaping man defenders is essential. Building the wall to create throwing lanes is done in a number of methods. • Using Horizontal and Vertical separation techniques will best maximize spacing late in the route.

  • Drafting NFL Wide Receivers: Hit Or Miss? by Amrit Dhar
Drafting NFL Wide Receivers: Hit or Miss? By Amrit Dhar I. Introduction The Detroit Lions, an NFL franchise known for regularly fielding poor football teams, attained a cumulative win/loss record of 48-128 from the 2000-2010 seasons. Many football analysts believe that part of their failure to create quality football teams is due to their aggression in selecting wide receivers early in the NFL draft, and their inability to accurately choose wide receivers that become elite NFL players. Over the past decade, they have spent four of their 1st round draft picks on wide receivers, and only two of those picks actually remained with the Lions for more than two years. The Lions represent an extreme example, but do highlight the inherent unpredictability in drafting wide receivers that perform well in the NFL. However, teams continue to draft wide receivers in the 1st round like the Lions have done as the NFL has evolved into a “passing” league. In 2010 alone, 59 percent of NFL play-calls were called passes, which explains the need for elite wide receivers in any franchise. In this report, I want to analyze whether the factors that teams believe are indicative of wide receiver effectiveness in the NFL actually do lead to higher performance. The above anecdote suggests that there is a gap between how NFL teams value wide receivers in the draft and how well they perform in the NFL. By conducting statistical analyses of where wide receivers were chosen in the NFL draft against how they performed in the NFL, I will be able to determine some important factors that have lead to their success in the NFL, and will be able to see whether those factors correspond to the factors that NFL draft evaluators believe are important for success in the NFL.

Flag Football Drills Running/Hand Off Drill o Stress to kids that the arm closest to the quarterback is the one that goes up when receiving a handoff, and the one further away is the arm that is lower . o Split two groups evenly and have them line up on a line about 10 yards apart from each other. Have one side start with the ball, he should then run towards the other group, while the first runner from that group runs towards him. Both sides are assigned a side to stick to once they meet each other, practice hand off exchanges between the two groups. Keep practicing this motion between the two sides. Passing/Catching Drill o Have a quarterback and receivers line up on a line, which can be used as a line of scrimmage. The receivers should line up one behind the other. The quarterback and receivers should figure out which route they are running, have the quarterback work on leading receivers and the receivers work on catching the ball, then turning up field. This drill can be more efficient if you have two quarterbacks; you can then have receivers on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Defensive Drills o Pursuit drills will help defenders figure out which angles to take when chasing a ball carrier. A good way to do this is to have one player line up on the five yard line, somewhere in the middle of the field. The other player should stand at the goal line but right on the sideline. Set a cone about 40 yards on the sideline from the goal line.

  • Beginner's Guide to Football
Beginner's Guide to Football One 11-man team has possession of the football. It is called the offense and it tries to advance the ball down the field-by running with the ball or throwing it - and score points by crossing the goal line and getting into an area called the end zone. The other team (also with 11 players) is called the defense. It tries to stop the offensive team and make it give up possession of the ball. If the team with the ball does score or is forced to give up possession, the offensive and defensive teams switch roles (the offensive team goes on defense and the defensive team goes on offense). And so on, back and forth, until all four quarters of the game have been played. THE FIELD The field measures 100 yards long and 53 yards wide. Little white markings on the field called yard markers help the players, officials, and the fans keep track of the ball. Probably the most important part of the field is the end zone. It's an additional 10 yards on each end of the field. This is where the points add up! When the offense - the team with possession of the ball-gets the ball into the opponent's end zone, they score points. TIMING Games are divided into four 15-minute quarters, separated by a 12-minute break at halftime. There are also 2-minute breaks at the end of the first and third quarters as teams change ends of the field after every 15 minutes of play.

  • Football Study Guide
FOOTBALL STUDY GUIDE American football as we know it today was developed in the late 19th century from 2 English sports; soccer and rugby. In 1876, the Intercollegiate Football Association was formed, and this organization developed many uniform rules of the game including setting the line of scrimmage, the systems of downs and scoring. A regulation football field is 300 ft (100 yds) in length from goal line to goal line and the width is 160 ft (53 1/3 yds). The end zones are 30 ft (10 yds) wide. 11 players make an official team for all of the offensive, defensive, and special teams. The object of the game is to score at your opponent’s end zone by running and/or passing the ball across the goal line for a touchdown, or kicking the ball through the goal posts. The scoring is usually done mainly by the offensive team, however, the defensive team can score points by tackling the quarterback in the end zone for a safety, or returning a turnover(fumble/interception) for a touchdown. Each offensive team is allowed 4 downs (10 yds) a turn to get a first down. If an offensive team fails to earn a first down within those 4 downs, it is turned over to the other team. A regulation game consists of 4 quarters and if a game is tied after the 4 quarters, there is an overtime period. The team with the most points after 4 quarters is declared the winner. Scoring/point values: Touchdown: 6 Field goals: 3 Pass/run extra points: 2 Safety: 2 Kicked extra point: 1 Various penalties: Delay of game: 5 yds Holding: 10 yds Encroachment/off sides: 5 yds Clipping: 15 yds False start: 5 yds Roughing the passer: 15 yds Illegal motion: 5 yds Unsportsmanlike conduct:15 yds Positions OFFENSIVE: Quarterback- the player who takes the snap from the Center and decides to hand off, passes, or run the ball.
