KING’SCOLLEGE CAMBRIDGE CHAPELSERVICES MICHAELMASTERM 2014 NOT TO BE TAKEN AWAY THE USE OF CAMERAS, RECORDING EQUIPMENT, VIDEO CAMERAS AND MOBILE PHONES IS NOT PERMITTED IN CHAPEL NOTICES NEW FACES As ever, there are some people to welcome at the start of the Michaelmas Term. It is wonderful to be able to welcome new choristers and choral scholars, together with our new junior organ scholar. We note with gratitude the combination of talent, effort and dedication that has brought them to this threshold and that of all those people who have helped them get to this point. We note, too, an enhanced role for Ian Griffiths, the Deputy Chapel Administrator, who will now be largely responsible for the preparation of services. Now that Dr Jeremy Morris has moved to be Master of Trinity Hall we have a new Dean. Stephen Cherry is not a new face in the Chapel, having served here as chaplain from 1989–1994. Since then Stephen has been rector of All Saints with Holy Trinity, Loughborough (1994–2006) and a Residentiary Canon and Director of Ministry in Durham (2006–2014). Stephen has written four books: Barefoot Disciple – Walking the Way of Passionate Humility which was the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent book in 2011; Healing Agony – Re-imagining Forgiveness; Beyond Busyness – Time Wisdom for Ministry and Barefoot Prayers – A Meditation a day for Lent and Easter. CHORAL SERVICES Services are normally sung by King’s College Choir on Sundays and from Tuesdays to Saturdays. Services on Mondays are sung by King’s Voices, the College’s mixed voice choir. Exceptions are listed. ORGAN RECITALS Each Saturday during full term time there is an organ recital at 6.30 p.m. until 7.15 p.m. Admission is free, and there is a retiring collection. There is no recital on 8 November and 15 November. As part of the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the completion of the building of the Chapel which falls next year, most of the former College organ scholars are returning to give a recital. This series begins this term with recitals by Peter Stevens (18 October) and Peter Barley (25 October). We are glad to mark this important strand in the musical history and life of the College. [ 3 ] MUSIC Schubert’s Mass in G is accompanied by strings at the Sung Eucharist on Sunday 5 October and Christmas Day. On Tuesday 14 October, George Benjamin will attend evensong, at which his anthem ’Twas in the year that King Uzziah died will be sung, prior to his admittance as an Honorary Fellow. On Saturday 8 November, music by Sir Harrison Birtwistle is featured at Evensong. It is hoped that the composer will be present for the service, and for the two concerts which will be taking place on that day in the Chapel. These events form part of a short festival, arranged by Richard Causton, Fellow, marking Birtwistle’s 80th birthday. On Wednesday 12 November, the Choir performs with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and soloists in a Bach concert which will open this year’s ‘Concerts at King’s’ series and also the Cambridge Music Festival. As a prelude to the celebrations next year of the 500th anniversary of the completion of the building of the Chapel, a new book will be launched on Sunday 16 November. Evensong on that day features, almost exclusively, music written for the College, and/or by Kingsmen.
