  • Disney and His Worlds
DISNEY AND HIS WORLDS Disney and his Worlds is a thorough overview of what is by now quite a large literature on the Disney organization, in particular the theme parks and their significance for contemporary culture. The author looks at Walt Disney’s life and how his biography has been constructed; the Walt Disney Company in the years after his death; and the writings of various commentators on the Disney theme parks. He raises important issues about the parks: whether they are harbingers of postmodernism; the significance of consumption at the parks; the nature of the parks as tourism; and the representation of past and future. The discussion of theme parks is central but links with the presentation of Walt Disney’s biography and his organization by showing how central economic and business considerations have been in their development, and how the significance of these considerations is typically marginalized in order to place an emphasis on fantasy and magic. In the process, the book questions the assumption that the parks are sites of postmodern sensibility. Disney films, merchandizing and theme parks are one of the defining features of our times and one of the more effective elements in American cultural imperialism. It is impossible to imagine an encyclopedic sociology of contemporary culture that did not devote at least a chapter to Disney and his Worlds. In particular the parks are often employed as examples in areas like cultural studies, the sociology of postmodernism, tourism and leisure studies, while Walt Disney and his organization are important to the area of organization studies.

Carr and R.M. Hayes, published in 1988 by McFarland & Company, Inc., Jefferson, NC and London; ISBN 0-89950-242-3. This document may be more understandable if you reference the book, but it is written so that you can read it by itself and get the general idea. This document was written at the request of several individuals to document the problems I found in the book. I am not in the habit of marking up books like I had done with this particular book, but the number of errors I found was overwhelming. The corrections are referenced with the appropriate page number and paragraph in the book. I have primarily limited my comments to the state of the art as it was when the book was published in 1988.

  • Two Spheres: Mao and the Market in Chinese Architecture (1990-)
Two Spheres: Mao and the Market in Chinese Architecture (1990-) Jiawen Han A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Australian School of Architecture and Design Faculty of the Built Environment August 2014 ABSTRACT Mao and the market, meaning the centralised state and the market, as expanded by Robin Porter, is the broad subject of this thesis. The aim of this study is to examine how changes in the social-political system, the residual influence of Mao, and the acceptance of the market, have changed Chinese architecture over recent time. The process from Mao to market currently cannot be easily situated within any overarching theory, nor is it a linear and systematic transition, but it has far reaching effects on every corner of China, every Chinese social group, from bureaucratic agendas to personal motives. Looking at the architecture from this perspective provides a strategy, a fresh way of reading architecture and architects, and a solid way of framing them under the uncertain nature of the socialist transition. This research re-examines the new wave of innovative architecture through three case studies of Liu Jiakun, Cui Kai, URBANUS and their designs in the context of a longer vision and a broader perspective, extending the research to an ideological level. The market, the West, the East, the state, the architect – all these elements are decisive factors in shaping contemporary architecture, but they make different contributions in different cases, and, more significantly, they affect architectural design at different points in time under different versions of socialism. In other words, the intricate details of the historical pressures and practical approaches have been clarified through case studies.

We consume many goods and services that we must have in order to live and more that we simply want or think we need. Often we must go to particular settings to obtain these goods and services (although, as we will see, more and more of them are coming to us). This book is concerned with those settings: home-shopping television, shop- ping malls, online shopping sites, fast-food restaurants, theme parks, and cruise ships, to name a few. Unlike many treatments of the subject of consumption, this is not a book about the consumer1 or the increasing profusion of goods and services.2 Rather, it is about the settings3 that allow, encourage, and even compel us to consume so many of those goods and services. The settings of interest will be termed the new means of consumption. These are, in the main, locales that came into existence or took new forms after the end of World War II and that, building on but going beyond earlier settings, dramatically trans- formed the nature of consumption.
