Under 11 Black Coach: Matt Burns We have a very strong motto in the Ashy u11 blacks and that is GOOD TEAMS FIND A WAY, GOOD PLAYERS FIND A TEAM MATE but I think we may need to add a bit to that motto for wet days and that is "IN THE WET”. Because if you can find a way in the wet, you can find a way anywhere. Today we FOUND A WAY IN THE WET!! After a very slow start, the boys finally got out of their Pyjama's and turned up to play footy. There was some outstanding performances from our regulars but also the lift of all players right across the group has been amazing. We are continuing to focus on our "run on" style of footy and it was great to see that the boys were not afraid to try some flow on team passages of play in the trying the conditions. Once again , every player contributed and played a part in the great win against Banyule. Great captains game by Ned THE Chisel Chesler who continues to find the ball and our Opposition medal winner Oscar White just had a day out. We’ll continue to push that flow on style of footy and never forget what means the most to us and that is the love of the game and a great team.

Colts Black Coach: Matthew Blizzard The blacks walked out onto a great environment for playing football - Rain with a soft and muddy ground to face of with third on the ladder - Invanhoe. The contest was on from the first bounce, with what turned out to be - 2 very evenly sides hitting out. Only 6 goals scored in the game with Invanhoe just holding on to take a 2 point win. The win eluded us - however; the spirt of our endeavour and caricature in which this team played through to the final siren was fantastic to see and be apart of. Given that this is only the 3rd time this team has played together - they are improving week by week - and todays lesson in wet weather football was one well learned by all of us. Well done team - it was a great effort. We will have another chance at Invanhoe before the end of the season.

Under 8 White Under 8 White Coach: Tim Schleiger WINTER IS COMING! It was a grey and dreary morning at Ferrie oval against local rivals the Glen Iris Gladiators. Not long after the first bounce, the rains started and it was a mad dash by the spectators to secure some shelter under their trusty umbrellas. The conditions on field were slippery, but to their credit, the boys were still able to use the ball cleanly without many mishandles or mistakes. It was the boys first match on a "full sized oval". They demonstrated the value of perseverance and hard running over the slightly larger than normal distances. The final quarter in particular was a frenzy of goals shared by all the forwards who capitalised on some brilliant centre clearances. If only Goal Umpire Dee had as many at the opposition's end to show off her practiced and perfected flag waving skills. A well earned rest for the boys this weekend.

Under 9 Red Coach: Matt Pietsch Shark Park lived up to its name with some big fish on the opposition keeping our boys under constant attack. The redbacks stuck together and focused on the message of hard ball gets, run & kick to space, stand tall on the mark, and looks for your team mates. Tom Verge started the game off with pivotal touches through the midfield, with Jackson coming of the bench early to give the team a boost and continued this on for the day, Tyson Fernee was rested in the first quarter but he hit the opposition hard when he came on the ground with some tough and goal saving tackles, Henry was marking well all day while Thomas Davies & Ollie Pietsch were tackling hard and given off effective possessions. Evan McVey was again busy racking up possessions across the ground while Jonty & Dozer eased their way into the game with a big last quarter efforts. Man of the match Bailey Currie worked hard to inspire the team with some hard ball gets and was well supported by Taylor Carlisle & Ben Jones. Emerging key forward Hugo Monkovitch was solid again all day and Josh Eardley & Josh McLoughlin persisted all day with some timely touches. Charlie Ryan & Ollie Grogan roved the packs well and brought their team mates into the game by hand and foot. A great efforts by the team and plenty of scope to have a sensational second half of the season.

Under 9 Black Coach: Simon Miller Today's game - Redbacks against Canterbury Cobras. Two teams who have plenty of venom according to their name sake, saw the Redbacks come out fighting early and inflicting some punishment early with multiple goals in the first quarter. Ashy U9 Black had come to play and relished in the open space at Balwyn Park, even though conditions were damp and slippery. Colts Red Coach: Brett Gatehouse The winter weather was certainly felt on Sunday as we took on Park Orchards away in tough muddy conditions. It was always going to be a tough slog against a good quality full strength park orchards outfit and unfortunately the had the better of us from the get go. They played better wet weather footy and managed to force the ball forward at every contest. However, our effort and intensity at the ball was extremely pleasing to see. Westy and Flynny were relishing the conditions throwing themselves at every single contest. Dyl Wolters was solid at half back and also provided a good contest at half forward. We came out stronger and more fierce after half time and our effort turn into more ball going our way. Shortly after half time we were able to slot through our first goal for the day through Jordy Arazi. Good to see Jordy back into the team after a solid stint of through injury, hes worked hard to get back out there and the work has showed. Good work mate! Although the result didnt go our way we cracked in very hard in tough conditions and I cant fault the effort all the boys put in.

The spirit, fierce tackling and determination of our team once again kept us in the game but in the end we went down by 28 pts. to a very good team. .Should the boys maintain their desire, our next win should not be too far away.

Under 10 White Coach: Simon Martin Wakey wakey boys, it's time to play footy. Oh no it's happened again, half asleep and we are 3 goals down in the first quarter. Suddenly the alarm clocks went off and a goal from Abhay and a big bomb from Will SR brought us in just a goal down and feeling a bit lucky. The boys weren't happy with themselves and stepped it up in the second. Fidel fizzed around half forward and bagged a hat- trick profiting from quick hand passes from Nico. Stitch added another and we were 3 goals clear all of a sudden. But it was no accident, all about workin harder and backing each other up. once we get ahead, the boys dig their trenches and lock you down, Rylan and Danny organising and manning the wall. We moved into the third quarter and Hughie continued his comeback from injury with a few trademark swashbuckling runs and a clean kick through the posts. Then we could afford to sit on our hands in the last quarter, kicking a few behinds and look forward to a week off. We loved having one of the under 9s Taylor play up for us, and while his jumper was 5 sizes too big, he grew in stature to fit it, grabbing a couple of great marks and clean kicks to match, one to watch. A great season so far from the boys and a well deserved break.

Under 12 Black Under 12 Black Coach: Greg Dixon We played against Park Orchards on a very wet and miserable afternoon. The first quarter started with us controlling the game. The instructions were to capitalise on our recent training sessions which have been dedicated to playing more contestable football, making sure that the opposition was not going to get out the back of us and provide tackling pressure. We executed beautifully. The midfield in John Hynes, Peter Bohan and Jamie Torey were right on top and although the opposing ruckman stood 10 centimetres above Sam Carmody, he kept leaping over the top and beating him around the ground. This allowed us to have the ball in our forward half at least 60% of the quarter and really dominate the game. When they did get it out of the forward line, Eddie Georglin playing a defensive role for the first time, took to his position like he had been playing it all year and provided a great block as he continued to drive it back into our forward line. Harrison Cutts, Lachie Irwin, Wilshy Khan and James McLean were all playing hard football ahead of the ball ensuring that we looked dangerous up forward for the entire quarter while Tom Prior playing full forward roamed the forward line in his customary tough fashion making all their backline wary of picking the ball up. Cam Serpell who was playing a great role not only winning a lot of contestable footy but also making space was on the end of some fantastic work when Will Smith and McLean put some good forward pressure on resulting in our resident bull Torey forcing the ball out of a pack and handballed to the waiting Serpell who goaled from a great snap. They only had 3 inside 50’s for the quarter but unfortunately their midfield got out the back of us on one occasion that saw them score a goal and we went in to the quarter time break equal which in hindsight was a little disappointing. The second quarter saw Park Orchards come out a lot more competitive and the 2nd term saw a more see-sawing game. The possessions were split down the middle as we had it half the time but they also had a fair bit of the ball. We not only let their mid field get out the back of us but also saw their forward line do the same as they had a period of 5 minutes in which they peppered the forward line for 2 goals while we couldn’t trouble the scorers down our end for the same amount of inside 50’s. Zac Gucciardo was doing a great job at Centre Half Back, Ben Tricarico was getting a lot of the ball with his customary run at half back and Jackson Hribar and Harison Boothey were hard and tackled well while winning the ball as they strived to stop the run. When you add to that group Dom O’Leary who was his usual tough best it could have been a lot worst. Us 1.3, them 3.1 Half time was about reminding the playing group that they were actually on top even though we were two goals down and a challenge was sent out to the midfield to stop their outside run and a collective plea for everyone to play in front and they rose to the challenge. Again we got the ascendancy and had the majority of the ball. Steve Moffat was playing contestable footy while still getting his usual run, Luka McConchie was capping off his good second quarter highlighted by him stopping a certain goal against 5 opponents and Jack Wyld who is getting better each week really strating showing his strength along with his customary flair to provide space. When McLean kicked it to Smith who gathered and got the handball out the back, provided a second effort to with the ball coming out of the stoppage to find the kick then to Torey who slotted it home we found that the stage was set for an exciting last quarter. The score was us 2.6 to them 3.2 as we continued to inch our way back It is fair to say that the last quarter was going to need a huge effort from everyone and that is exactly what we got. Everyone played well but there was four marks on the weekend that I thought summed up our progression thus far this year and the exciting last quarter. O’Leary’s goal saving mark again showing how reliable he is, McConchie’s mark 30 metres out directly in front of the opposition goals with 3 minutes to go as he demonstrates time and time again how well he reads the play, Smith’s reaching mark and shot on goal in the last quarter to top off his half a dozen great tackles is a great reward for getting into the right positions and the mark that topped Team Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4 Warrandyte 1.2-8 2.3-15 4.4-28 5.6-36 Results Ashburton B 2.3-15 6.3-39 6.5-41 7.7-49 Best Players Everyone Goals C. Under 15 Boys Coach: Ryan McDonough Playing Boorundara for a second time this season was always going to be a good test for our boys with them holding us to just the one goal last time we played. The scoring and defence from our team was certainly a lot better. With the boys improving their scoring shots from 3 to 12 and holding the other team to 8 less than last time it was a great effort from the boys. Unfortunately we were running low on numbers this week and this resulted in some very tired legs in the last quarter, which saw us unable to keep running with them. Overall though the boys were fantastic for the day and there were some real signs of improvement and great things for the rest of the season.

Mark of the Day Not supplied Best Team Player Not supplied Under 11 Green Under 11 Green Coach: Dale Rowley A traditional day of wet weather footy at a traditional footy ground at Preston. Following some insightful words from co-captain Elijah Bazley, Ashy Green started the game well with a strong first quarter. Our midfield led by Tom Voler in the ruck was working hard, while Ferg Ekins, Charlie Mathews and Zack Thurman took some good marks around the ground. Charlie M worked the ball forward, where some excellent forward pressure from Leigh Bouyoukas and Elijah resulted in a strong mark and goal from Zack. Our backline, led by Will McQueen, repelled a number of Bullant advances. In the second quarter we dominated the play with the ball spending a long time in our forward fifty thanks to some strong ruck work from Lachie Harkness and the midfield group. Our weight of possession resulted in Charlie M snagging a goal (with some goal umpiring assistance provided by Runner Cam McKerral!). Zack took a hard knock for the team, and came back courageously in the quarter continuing his damaging play. James Edgar was winning the full back position, covering a lot of ground and laying a strong bump on an opponent. Angus McCleery and Leo Edwards combined well in defence, with Leo leaving his man to lay a strong tackle stopping a Bullant shot on goal. Similar to previous weeks, our opponents came out strongly in the third quarter with a number of forward entries. Ferg, James E and Sean Egan fought bravely in defence. Ryan Edmonds provided a great tackle on the opposition while streaming out of defence, and Harry Stack helped out his teammates with some good shepherding. Leo, Luka Best, Elijah and Angus were providing good effort in the midfield. While our forward line of Harry, Charlie M, Charlie Nancarrow and Leigh looked dangerous at times. However, by the end of the quarter we found ourselves trailing by under two goals. We started the last quarter well fighting hard to get back in front. Ryan showed great attack on the ball, while Ned Clements was desperate on the wing. Ollie McKerral and Luka both showed what a tough game it was taking a couple of hard hits. However, as the quarter wore on we started to lose our structure making it difficult for us the score. The end result was a tight win to the Bullants.

SHARP COPIERS/DDS Under 14 Red

Under 14 Red Coach: Steve Worner Great First half when the boys matched the benchmark of last year. Tackling and pressure was excellent but we could not hit the scoreboard 3rd quarter with all the play and Beverley Hill made us pay for mistakes which is modern footy. Last quarter the bigger bodies prevailed as the boys lost there way a little.

Under 12 Green Coach: Bill Mithen In misty and greasy conditions on Burwood Lower, Ashy Green under 12s recorded a stirring 7 point comeback victory against traditional rivals Fitzroy. In fact this game was so good it had two finishes. More on that below. This match celebrated a hat trick of 50th game milestones for Ben 'the Chairman' Mithen, the Tank Thomas Martin and Daniel 'Colonel' Hogan. Not surprisingly, the three dynamic midfielders struggled to squeeze through two banners with the Colonel nearly tipping over head first as he crashed through the crepe paper at the start of the game. Maybe the banner shortage was a sign that the club's fundraising activities really do need our assistance. Once again, the Redbacks started strongly with loads of possession for the milestoners, Mithen, Martin and Hogan but failed to convert the early control. The visiting Royboys were resilient and stocked with some genuine talent. Their super quick rebound half way through the opening quarter caught our resident goal umpire, Damian 'the Whole Truth' Toohey off-guard, knocking over his precious decaf soy latte. The quarter time break saw steady rain requiring urgent maintenance work on Billy 'the Butcher' Branagan's sports specs. ('Butcher Brannigan' was an icon of Australian wrestling 1970-78 renowned for his trade mark holds, the brutal Stepover Fingerlock, Rotating Elbow Drop and the since banned Manchurian Clothesline). As rain continued, the contest tightened during a second quarter that saw a genuine breakout performance by Joel 'Mopsy' McMahen (descendent of 1950s Melbourne VFL premiership captain Noel McMahen). The Mop soaked up the dampness and in an amazing sequence of fierce contests, appeared everywhere, marking, baulking and hitting targets as he cut through the Fitzroy midfield with all the speed and precision of a Melbourne FC supporter running late for the start of the ski season. Mopsy's fine efforts were capped off by a freakish snap for goal just before the half. As the rain kicked in again after the long break, the Roys inched ahead with some excellent disposal. The besieged Redbacks defence was repeatedly saved by the heroic efforts of James Davies, Oscar Boulter and Hamish the 'Hammer' Toohey. Davies triggered the Redbacks only goal for the quarter with a vital clearance which took the home team coast to coast with a polished finish by the Saint, Harvey Moore. Both teams turned for the last, the visitors two points to the good. Joel Bennett sacrificed his own game with some intelligent defensive work and was well supported in the packs by Hugh Bourke, Aden Shinnick, the Butcher and the Chairman. Scoring became locked up, level with only minutes to go. The game needed an extra something and so did the Redbacks. But cometh the hour, cometh the man. Gus the 'Tarmac' Simpfendorfer simply turned on a one man show. Denied earlier permission for takeoff by Coach Mithen, the Tarmac this time headed straight down his own personal runway, through the centre with a series of heart in mouth wobbly bounces, fend-offs and near fumbles, one, two, three, four before unloading one of the most incredible……points of the year. While off-line, this supreme effort gave the Redbacks a precious one-point lead. And then, he did it all again with a carbon copy, this time drilling it for victory. And as if there wasn't enough tension in the dying seconds an accidental blowing of the siren meant the game had to re-start with 90 seconds left. The Redbacks just made it over the line – both times. This was a great game in difficult conditions – the visitors put up an immense effort. Well done to both teams. Written by Mark Branagan

Under 15 Girls Red Coach: David Cooper Beautiful winters day for footy. Girls responded from the 1st bounce and dominated the game for the entire day. 2nd half became very clustered in our forward line as the Ivanhoe coach thought it would be smart to put 15 girls in the back line. Just keep trying Under 9 White Under 9 White Coach: Simon Goodwin Backs to the wall. On the eve of D Day (6 June 1944) this was a critical moment for the Ashy Redback White under 9s. Leaderless, rudderless, adrift. With senior coach Simon 'Goody' Godwin away on club sanctioned AFL media duties and his increasingly ambitious understudy, Justin 'JR' Reid away interstate on top-secret, undercover recruiting duties (which we weren't supposed to know about) it was time for a hero, another leader to step up and take on the coaching mantle. And we were in luck as in reality, the only possible nomination as stand-in coach was none other than former Auskick guru and Team Manager Nick 'Chainsaw' Adams who happily surrendered the clipboard, the teamsheet and oranges for a taste of the coaching Big Time. The Chainsaw donned the signature grey coach's tracky dacks with glee, dusted off his personal magnetic white board and moved straight into senior coaching mode. Adams' strategy was clear and direct, his game plan absorbing his young players, the deep, chainsaw voice ripping through the cool Burwood air, 'OK, so does everyone know where they are?'. Round 8 pitted our Ashy heroes against traditional rivals Richmond and as expected, the Tigers put up a spirited display. This week's captain 'den ganzen Tag' was none other than no nonsense defender, Josh 'the Warden' Martin who marshalled the troops and led from the front. The Redbacks were quick to get on the scoreboard with goals to the 'Leap of Faith' Lucas Huggins who snapped brilliantly over his shoulder, followed by Eddy 'Good News' Goodwin before the skipper himself, the Warden broke free for a great goal. The opening quarter produced an avalanche of scoring but the base had been well set by some strong marking from Lach 'the Gate' Gough, the 'Postman' Jack Urquhart with courier precision and the 'Anvil' Angus Macmillan who made a spectacular attempt to mark early in the piece. The game tightened up after quarter time, the visiting Tigers no doubt inspired by what looked to be some sort of ongoing Constitutional debate in the middle of the ground, conducted by Ethan the 'Edge' Georgiades. The Edge appeared to be engaging in a merry commentary with most of the Richmond midfield players who also seemed to gain an enormous sense of hilarity and humour from the Edge's thoughts and observations on the world. But as always, it was the honest and earthy toiler, Jayden 'Rowdy' Reid who brought focus back to the football with a wonderful goal which was then quickly followed by some strong play through the middle between the B Double, Jonny Branagan and the 'Masterpiece' Pat Harmon which led to a wonderful snap by the Showboat, Lucas Simianateo. As the second half unfolded, Luca 'the Diamond' Dal Pozzo elevated his game to a new status. The Diamond contested, tackled and fought hard leading to a brilliant piece of work in the forward pocket, off-loading to his cousin, Ev Dog McMahen on the outside. It was a great performance by the two relatives - proudly observed by Ev Dog's father, Dr Honesty Paul McMahen who had somehow managed to find some free time away from his recent obsessive possum relocation activities and upcoming marsupial resettlement and re-education program. Our trusty goal umpire was kept busy with a further deluge of goals during the last from the 'Professor' George Adams and Gus the 'Grinder' Grainger. The Tigers lifted as well for some great scoring in the final stanza and with so many goals the performance was reminiscent of the '89 grand final or the '33 classic between Richmond and South Melbourne. This was a great game of footy – well done to both sides. As for the coaching, it was a brilliant performance by the stand-in, Chainsaw Adams. However, the burning question in this intriguing ongoing Coaching Conundrum is of course who will take on the senior role in weeks to come. Perhaps it is a good time for that midyear break so we can all recharge our batteries and resume the action after the long weekend. The boys from warrandyte jumped out of the blocks at the first bounce with the tallest mid field I have seen and got the score on the board early which was then hard to peg back. Jules smith battled hard in the first quarter against the big guys in the ruck. A couple of changes to our set up in the second qtr and our guys came out firing - we moved the ball well through the middle of the ground and resulted in two nice goals, and only down by a kick at half time. But after half time our opposition put the gas down and bagged a few quick goals to run away with the win. A super effort by Austin today when we asked him to play and run with one of the big guys all day. Not only did he stop and shut the big number 22 down with pressure and hard tackles, but never gave up even giving away a lot of height. Other good mentions today were our other big fellas Josh/Nick and Oli who took turns in the ruck against much taller opponents.
