The Redbacks visit to Kew was the first taste of winter conditions, after a massive overnight deluge. A freezing breeze ripped across Victoria Park (no not the Collingwood one) as players and parents gathered for round three. As things would turn out, the wind would play a significant role in the day's action, favouring the far or east Kew end. The Redbacks toiled manfully in the first quarter but with no result as the wind sabotaged a barrage of goal efforts. The Comets on the other hand played well on the counter, opening spaces and delivering well from limited forward entries. The Redbacks were focused on the contest with Ethan "the Edge" Georgiades leading the way and playing his best term for the year. Teddy "Betts" Hall was mercurial up forward, dipping and dodging before unloading lethal foot fire that saw the Redbacks convert twice in the second quarter through goals to Lethal Louis Jones and "Cracker Jack" Urquhart. The home side took complete control after the half time break, bombarding the goals but spraying wide. Ev Dog McMahen held things tight with great support from Lucas Huggins and Josh Martin. The quarter was topped off by a great flying goal on the run by Jayden Reid. With the wind at their backs, the Redbacks flew home with a great finish. Gary Ablett Junior (Jnr), Paddy Harmon pumped the ball continuously into a forward line, led by George "the Professor" Adams, who absolutely starred with three goals in the last. It was tight at the end. Results No Results are recorded at this level Best Players Adams, Hall, Jones, Harmon, Grainger. Goals Adams 3; Jones 1; Urquhart 1; Reid 1. Goal of the Day George Adams, 4th quarter, forward pocket, boundary line, last minute, over the shoulder, five defenders hanging off him. Play of the Day Gus Grainger, running through the midfield...and stopping to unload a handball. Mark of the Day Lucas Huggins, centre half back, surrounded by opponents. Best Team Player Lucas Simionato. Under 8 White Under 8 White Coach: Tim Schleiger After a little bit of confusion as to where exactly we were meant to go, the Under 8 White team took to the field against the Kew Comets determined to put into practice the skills they have been developing at training. The weather conditions were trying as the boys fronted both a skilled opposition and some fierce winds. All the boys played their best and there were several passages of impressive play against some stiff competition. There were plenty of great marks and clean kicks but the standout (and perhaps the team attribute for which we will become reknown) was our strong and consistent tackling. Results No Results are recorded at this level Best Players Luke Suckling - was our medal recipient. He saw a lot of the ball and played in the spirit of good sportsmanship. Goals Whole team effort Goal of the Day After ducking and weaving though the backline defence, Jordan Katiforis snapped a sensational goal! Play of the Day It was a whole team effort that closed the ball in our forward line against the strong winds for an ENTIRE 5 minutes. Great job! Mark of the Day Hugh Saunders took a magnificent specky in the fourth quarter. It was a beauty! Once again we faced an undermanned team and four of our boys stepped up to don the oppositions jersey for a quarter each. Thanks James Mariani, Hugh Best Team Player Saunders, Joey Dee and Josh Cormick. POPE PACKAGING Under 9 Red Under 9 Red Coach: Matt Pietsch A great game of footy was played by the whole side on Sunday. The section of Oliver Pietsch & Hugo Monkovitch as co-captains was well received by the team and the boys played with great tenacity with the two captains leading the way. First quarter goals by debutante Jonty Emtage and Taylor Carlisle gave the team a steady first quarter, with Thomas Davies, Tom Verge and Henry Sewell working hard through the mid field. The second quarter was played into s strong wind and some tough tackling by Tom Wrathall, Jonty Emtage & Bailey Currie through the midfield ensured limited supply to the opposition forwards. The back-men of Ben Swift and Oliver Pietsch both standing strong. The 3rd quarter was played as the Premiership quarter with Evan McVey dominating the stanza with 3 strong marks and goals, Oliver Grogan & Hugo Monkovitch also adding goals to scoreboard with some goal assist from Josh McLoughlin & Tyson Fernee. Charlie Ryan , Kade Eardley & Ben Jones were hardworking in the midfield also. The last quarter was a grind into wind and again the back line stood tough by tackling hard and applying relentless pressure to the opposition. Josh, Tyson, Hugo, Evan and Ollie G continued to run thorough the midfield and some slick passages of play gave some opportunity to the forwards.
