GOD’S GOOD CREATION: 1THE BEGINNING OF SALVATION HISTORY GOD’S GIFTS: CREATION and the SACRAMENTS At age fifteen, Annie Powell dreamed of having a summer camp for teens in the Colorado Rockies so that they could enjoy the beauty of her state and encounter God through creation. After she married, Annie and her husband, Scott, founded Camp Wojtyla. They named the camp after St. John Paul II, using his given name, Karol Wojtyla. As a young priest, Karol Wojtyla himself had spent a great deal of time leading teens and young adults to perceive God through hiking and skiing; he had a strong passion for inviting youth to encounter Christ through creation. Camp Wojtyla now serves middle-school and high-school teens and provides opportunities for encountering God in exploration of the natural world. During each week-long session, participants rock climb, raft, zip line, and hike through the Rockies as well as attend daily Mass and Eucharistic Adoration and have opportunities for Confession. In the evenings, campers reflect on their various outdoor and spiritual experiences, making connections with their day-to-day lives. The teens emerge with a profound sense of God’s love as experienced in creation. “Camp not only gave me a sense of courage and strength in myself, it gave me long-lasting friendships with young Catholics who want the same thing I do: a friendship with Jesus Christ. Every morning, I woke up to God’s beautiful creation, and that was enough to remind me how much he truly loves us,” one camper said at the end of the experience. -

COMPARATIVE SOTERIOLOGY AND LOGICAL INCOMPATIBILITY by Shandon L. Guthrie INTRODUCTION There is a tremendous amount of material that could have been included in this work on comparative soteriology; Nonetheless, I will attempt to encompass a variety of religious belief systems. I have selected Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity as world-wide representatives of different schools of thought. (1) When we think of religion, (2) we normally conjure up images of rules and regulations. In fact, most religions are primarily centered on some principle or guideline to follow in order to sustain or create some type of welfare for the individual. For this reason religion ultimately represents the desired path of each person who holds to some type of religious system. This brings us to the concept of soteriology . The term soteriology refers to the method or system of how one ought to operate in order to maximize personal and/or corporate salvation. Salvation itself actually carries a variety of definitions; However, the most basic way of defining it is in terms of "deliverance" or "welfare." (3) The question that immediately comes to mind is, "What exactly is one being 'delivered' or 'saved' from?" Indeed, every religion carries its own system and interpretation on such matters as these. Therefore, we shall examine and analyze each soteriological system according to the respective religion and determine if any or all religions can be simultaneously true. JUDAISM Judaism, like many religions, is a religion stemming from a long history of war and slavery. The most known aspects of Judaism are the dietary regulations, cultural practices, and political practices. -

Dispensationalism What and Why Not
Dispensationalism What and Why Not “Lutherans are unbelievers.” That is the first thought that crossed my mind when I learned they did not believe in the “rapture” or the “millennial kingdom” (the 1000 year reign of Christ on earth). Were not these teaching central to the Biblical witness and clear for everyone to see? At that moment two different theologies had collided and engaged in battle; Israel and Jesus, grappling on the shore of the Jabbok. The two theologies were “Dispensationalism” on one hand, and “Lutheranism” (“orthodoxy”, if you will) on the other. I did not yet know the names of the opponents, but I right away had a sense of the ferocity of the battle. At stake were two totally different ways of understanding the end times, the church, salvation and the purpose of history, even the very heart and character of God. So we arrive at the topic at hand: What is Dispensationalism and why is it wrong? There is perhaps no better example of confusing Law and Gospel in modern theology that the teaching of Dispensationalism. The depth of this confusion is tragically matched by the breadth of its exposure. Dispensationalism is so popular and widespread that it has become a major (if not the central) article in American Evangelical doctrine, teaching, preaching and popular piety1. Dispensationalism is not an isolated false teaching, it is an over-arching theological system; it is an eschatology (doctrine of the end times), an ecclesiology (doctrine of the church), soteriology (doctrine of salvation), a hermeneutic (approach to the Scriptures) and so forth. -

Tuesday, 29 September 2020 Soteriology - The doctrine of Salvation Subject • Love God more deeply for what He did for you. • Tell others more confidently what God can do for them. • Have an assurance of your salvation and an appreciation for God’s grace. • The problem: the need for salvation • The provision: the solution of salvation • The promise: the security of salvation Soteriology discusses how Christ’s death secures the salvation of those who believe. It helps us to understand the doctrines of redemption, justification, sanctification, propitiation, and the substitutionary atonement. Some common questions in studying Soteriology are: Understanding Biblical Soteriology will help us to know why salvation is by grace alone (Ephesians 2:8-9), through faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone. No other religion bases salvation on faith alone. Soteriology helps us to see why. A clear understanding of our salvation will provide a "peace that passes all understanding" (Philippians 4:7) because we come to know that He who can never fail is the means by which we were saved and the means by which we remain secure in our salvation. If we were responsible to save ourselves and keep ourselves saved, we would fail. Thank God that is not the case! KEY VERSE: Titus 3:5-8 is a tremendous summary of Soteriology, "He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Saviour, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.” RT KENDALL The most important subject of all It deals with the REASON God sent his son into the world It deals with our own souls and where we will spend eternity It equips us in how and what we share in evangelism. -

This way the soteriological picture of the Methodist-Lutheran discussions is clarified. The dialogues under analysis were selected on the basis of versatility. Firstly, the sole world organisation level dialogue was chosen: The Church – Community of Grace. Additionally, the document World Methodist Council and the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification is analysed as a supporting document. Secondly, a document concerning the discussions between two main-line churches in the United States of America was selected: Confessing Our Faith Together. -

INTRODUCTION 1. Hermeneutics. What do we mean by "hermeneutics"? Hermeneutics designates the scholarly attempt to clarify principles pertinent to an adequate understanding and interpretation of texts . The funda mental problem posed by hermeneutics is: how can sources of the past be understood in their own historical environment and their meaning for the present be adequately perceived? This problem becomes theologicaIIy relevant when applied to the Bible.! Or, again, Hermeneutics is the science and art of Biblical interpretation. It is a science because it is guided by rules within a system; and it is an art because the application of the rules is by skiII, and not mechanical imitation.2 What principles, or better for the purpose of this paper, what single principle should be used in the hermeneutical task? It is not an unimportant question. "The question of the true nature of interpretation is the supreme question."3 Even better, in another author's words, "The question of the central interpreting touchstone or key is the all important question in biblical interpretation."4 So then, we are not dealing with a peripheral matter, but rather with one of the central issues. What will be the touchstone; the theme with which we will approach the biblical materials? Will it be the apostle Paul's "In Christ" or "The Righteousness of God"; Luther's "Justification by Grace through Faith"; Calvin's "Sover eignty of God"; Dodd's "Realized Eschatology"; or Schweitzer's "Consistent Eschatology"? One such single principle has been advanced under the term "Heilsgeschichte." 2. -

Process Theodicy and the Life After Death: a Possibility Or a Necessity?
PROCESS THEODICY AND THE LIFE AFTER DEATH: A POSSIBILITY OR A NECESSITY? Sofia Vescovelli Abstract: In this paper I argue for the necessity of eschatology for process thought, and against the idea that the belief in a life after death is not an essential element for this theodicy. Without reference to an eschatological dimension, a process theodicy is led to admit a consequentialist conception of divine love and goodness that is inconsistent with its notion of a responsive and participative God who loves each creature. In the world many creatures suffer atrocious evils, which destroy the value of their lives, but the process God does not redeem these sufferings in a personal post-mortem life in which the sufferers participate and can find meaning for their individual evils. In order to support my thesis, I intend to examine some difficulties in process theodicy, especially in Charles Hartshorne’s position, showing how his doctrine of objective immortality is unsatisfactory. My starting point will be some criticisms advanced by John Hick against Hartshorne and the replies made by the process philosopher David R. Griffin. I conclude by contending that process theodicy, at least in its Hartshornean version, in denying the necessity of a personal afterlife, does not provide a satisfying answer to the soteriological-individual aspect of the problem of evil, namely the problem of the individual salvation in which the individual person can find redemption and meaning for the sufferings undergone or inflicted. In the process perspective the divine love is conceived in consequentialist terms and evils suffered by the individual are merely considered a by-product or the negative side of the divine creation out of chaos.
