    DISTRICT SURVEY REPORT OF SIVAGANGI, TAMILNADU, INDIA INTRODUCTION: Sivaganga is the district headquarters of Sivaganga District. It is bounded by Pudukkottai district on the Northeast, Tiruchirapalli district on the North, Ramanathapuram district on South East, Virudhunagar district on South West and Madurai District on the West. It comprises Eight taluks viz. Sivaganga, Karaikudi, Devakottai, Manamadurai, Ilayangudi, Thiruppathur, Kalayar Kovil, Singampunari with Sivaganga as headquarters. It encompasses an area of about 4189 sq km. GEOLOGY : In India, the occurrence of graphite ore is limited to the States of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Tamilnadu. The graphite deposit at Sivaganga in Tamilnadu is the best among all other occurrences. The Department of Geology and Mining (DGM), Tamilnadu carried out Sivaganga graphite project investigation at various stages from 1968 to 1971. The investigation work involved systematic mapping, trenching, and drilling. The deposit in this area shows pinching and swelling nature and the average width varies from 3 to 18 meters and extends upto 5.6 kms. The promising graphite occurrence is located about 7 kms. North-West of Sivaganga town and is approachable by a metal road from Pudupatti on Sivaganga-Melur road. The graphite bearing quartzite and quartrtzofelspathic gneisses have been noticed discontinuously for a stretch of about 18 kms from the village of Komalipatty in the East to Poovanthi in the West and it trends N80 0 E – S80 0 W . Graphite occurrences at Sivaganga may perhaps be attributed to two different processes. The regional metamorphism of carbonaceous impurities in the original argillaceous sediments may be one of the causes for the formation of the graphite in this area.

    CHAPTER - I CHAPTER – I EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The TNRTP conducted a District Diagnostic Study (DDS) with an in depth evaluation of the district for identifying the sectors, Subsectors and commodities. The DDS encompasses different project components of rural Eco-system development, Enterprise business plan financing, Skills and job opportunities and project. The study has been conducted with the perspective of the entrepreneur as the focus and seeing the things through the lens of the entrepreneur towards assisting the different project beneficiaries- Producer Groups, Enterprise Groups and Individual Enterprises. The study would help the project team in effective implementation of the scheme as well as in prioritization and proper execution of activities. The study has identified the sectors, sub-sectors, commodities and potential Enterprises, which are summarized as follows. Agro Business activities/Commodities: 22 activities Non-Farm based activities/Commodities: 18 activities Service Sector/Commodities: 9 activities Service Sector- Non-Agro based activities/Commodities: 32 activities Trading- Agro based and Non-Agro based activities: 10 activities Further based on the inherent facilitating factor and opportunities existing, potential enterprise clusters have been identified and documented for each Block of the district, for the entire 12 Blocks. Received: June 25 , 2018 Accepted: August 05, 2018 ABSTRACT The temple is one of the biggest in this Sivaganga old Ramanathapuram district with imposing towers, Mandapas, etc., It is one of the 14th sacred shrines of Lord Siva in Pandya Nadu which has glorious history dating back to the seventh century A.D. The village of Somanathamangalam or Kalayarkoil where this renowned shrine is situated, derives its name from the Kaleeswaram temple of the place, Kalayar is a corruption of the word, Kaleeswaran. During the Sangam period the place was known as Kanapper. Kalayarkoil derived its name from the Kaleeswarar Temple of the place. Kalayar is a corruption of the word Kaleeswaran, During the Sangam period, this place was known as Kanapper which is seen from the 21st verse in the Purananooru, sung by lyur Moolaikizhar, a poet of the sangam period. In the 9th century A.D. Saint Sundara moorthy Nayanar described the presiding deity in his devotional songs as kalai. Since then the deity has been knowing as kalayar, with the Tamil suffix ‘yar’ added to it, denoting respect. In this temple important for art, architecture, sculpture, painting, fairs and festivals.
