It has been a new nation for 12 years and has been busy building everything from a police force to an education system. Much progress has been made with help from many countries including Australia but there is still a long way to go. For many years now the Alternative Technology Association (ATA) has been working in Timor- Leste to provide small scale solar power installations in remote villages. In 2013 the ATA in collaboration with Timor Adventures commenced Light up Timor-Leste tours so that others can become involved in this wonderful project whilst also having a really good holiday. Getting to Timor Leste Darwin - Dili; Air North Denpasar - Dili; Sriwijaya & Air Timor About Atauro Atauro Island is a small island situated 25km north of Dili the capital city of Timor Leste. It sits between the Indonesian islands of Alor and Wetar. Atauro is about 25 km long and 9 km wide and is inhabited by about 10,000 people. Mt. Manucoco is the highest point at 999m above sea level. Atauro became part of Portuguese Timor as a result of the 1859 treaty of Lisbon. Over the years the island has been used as a prison island by the Portuguese and the Indonesians. The name Atauro means ‘goat’ in the local language. It was so named because of the large number of goats on the island. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by KUKILA KUKILA 6 No. 2 (1993): 85 - 109 RECENT ORNITHOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS FROM BURU by Paul Jepson (Final manuscript received 21 April 1993) Summary The island of Buru was visited between 8 Nov and 10 Dec 1969 and surveys conducted from field stations in the north-west of the island. A total of 112 species was recorded, including six of Bum's ten endemic species. Four of the endemic species, Pnoniturus mada, Monarcha loricatus, Rhipidura superflua and Zosterops buruensis were found to be quite common, but Lichmera deningeri and Cworacina fortis are considered to be uncommon or rare. The mountains or Burn from where Madanga ruficollis and Rhinomyias addita have previously beea collected were not visited. Concern is expressed concerning the status of two endemic parrots, Charmosyna toxopei and Tanypiathus gramineus, which were not conclusively recorded and which appear to have always been rare. Six species were recorded for the first tune on Buru. Introduction The Manchester Indonesia Islands Expedition visited the island of Buru between 8 Nov and 10 Dec 1989. The aim of the expedition was to obtain data related to the conservation of bird faunas. The results of the analysis of data on the ecology and habitat preferences of the bird species will appear elsewhere. The purpose of this paper is to present a systematic list of birds recorded on Bum by the expedition, and to publish notes collected for some of the species on moult, nests and vocalisations. We start off with some initial birding on the tiny island of Ambon before heading off to the seldom-visited island of Boano for the endemic Boano Monarch. Thereafter we continue south towards the Central Moluccan island of Seram in search of an array of incredibly exciting endemics such as Salmon-crested Cockatoo, Lazuli Kingfisher, Purple-naped Lory, Seram Boobook and Long-crested Myna to mention just a few. From Seram, we cruise northwards into the north-Moluccan sea where we explore these little-birded waters in addition to visiting the endemic-rich island of Obi for such delicacies as Carunculated Fruit Dove and Moluccan (Obi) Woodcock. From Obi, we cross Lydekker’s Line and journey eastwards towards the Raja Ampats. En route, a stop in at Kofiau will hopefully produce both Kofiau Paradise Kingfisher and Kofiau Monarch, both of which have been observed by fewer than 100 birders! We finally arrive in the Raja Ampats and the islands of Kri. Merpati and Waigeo where we will seek out some of our planet’s rarest and least-known species. These include such extraordinary gems as Wilson’s Bird-of-paradise (regarded by many as the most spectacular bird on earth!), Red Bird-of-paradise and Island Whistler. -

Risk NUMBER OF PAGES: x, 80 ii ABSTRACT Increasing human activity and population pressure on coastal marine resources, especially coral reefs, in Ambon have caused significant stresses on coral communities requiring careful management. A suitable environmental management strategy for this complex ecosystem, however, must be based on an accurate assessment of the state of these resources, natural variability, and the impact of human activities. Consequently, baseline research is needed to describe reef areas and to provide data about environmental changes. One control site (Tanjung Setan) and three affected sites (Hila, Wayame and Wailiha) on Ambon were observed to assess the condition ofthe reefs. Coral cover, coral growth rate, species richness and environmental parameters such as suspended particulate matter (SPM), resuspended sediment, salinity, temperature, dissolved nutrients (N03 and P04), <5 1 ~, and water clarity were measured to assess reef condition and to determine the possible causes of reefdegradation. Average coral cover in the control site (Tanjung Setan) is higher (64%) than that in affected sites: Hila (27%), Wayame (36%) and Wailiha (11%). -

This study aimed to determine genetic markers and phylogenetic relationships of Indonesian cuscuses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences. Materials and Methods: This study used 21 cuscuses caught from two provinces and 16 islands: 13 from Maluku and eight from Papua. Cuscus samples were taken by biopsy following ethics guidelines for animals. -

The Hila Prospect, near Hila village on Ambon Island, contains copper sulfide minerals in 4.4 Ma Ambon volcanic rocks. The host rocks consist of andesite, dacites, breccia and tuff locally intruded by biotite and biotite-cordierite granite. Pyrite- and chalcopyrite- bearing quartz veinlets and hydrothermal breccias in altered, and locally brecciated, andesites crop out over a 1 km distance in one drainage. The altered andesites contain quartz, sericite, disseminated pyrite and locally chalcopyrite. Analyses of four grab samples contain up to 0.014 ppm Au, 530 ppm Zn and 1550 ppm Cu. -

ANDAYA U:-fIVERSITY OF From an outsider's viewpoint, the diversity of language and ethnic groups scattered through numerous small and often inaccessible islands in Maluku might appear to be a major deterrent to economic contact between communities. But it was because these groups lived on small islands or in forested larger islands with limited arable land that trade with their neighbors was an economic necessity Distrust of strangers was often overcome through marriage or trade partnerships. However, the most . effective justification for cooperation among groups in Maluku was adherence to common origin myths which established familial links with societies as far west as Butung and as far east as the Papuan islands. I The records of the Dutch East India Company housed in the State Archives in The Hague offer a useful glimpse of the operation of local trading networks in Maluku. Although concerned principally with their own economic activities in the area, the Dutch found it necessary to understand something of the nature of Indigenous exchange relationships. The information, however, never formed the basis for a report, but is scattered in various documents in the form of observations or personal experiences of Dutch officials. From these pieces of information it is possible to reconstruct some of the complexity of the exchange in MaJuku in these centuries and to observe the dynamism of local groups in adapting to new economic developments in the area. In addition to the Malukans, there were two foreign groups who were essential to the successful integration of the local trade networks: the and the Chinese. -
