01:15 DocFilm Manufacturing Ignorance

Asbestos, climate change, 5G, coronavirus - the public is caught in a battle for the truth. Science is being manipulated and undermined to sway opinion and create doubt. What are the mechanisms behind it all? Never has scientific knowledge seemed so vast, detailed and widely shared. And yet it appears to be increasingly challenged. It’s no longer surprising to see private corporations put strategies in place to confuse public debate and paralyze political decision-making. Why did it take decades to classify tobacco as harmful? Why do people still deny human involvement in climate change? Overwhelmed by an excess of information, how can we, as citizens, sort out fact from fiction? One by one, this film dismantles the machinations that aim to turn science against itself. With the help of declassified archives and testimonies from experts, lobbyists and politicians, this investigation plunges us into the science of doubt. Along with a team of experts, including philosophers, economists, cognitive scientists, politicians, and scholars, we explore concrete examples of how doubt can be sown, and try to understand the process.

01:15 DocFilm Discarded Children

Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte is waging a brutal war on drugs. Thousands of people have already died at the hands of the police, including children. The populist president has ordered the country’s security forces to kill anyone that they think is connected to the drugs trade. Minors have also suffered under the crackdown. Some children have been inadvertently killed during drugs raids, while others have become police targets. Most come from the poorest sections of society. The film makers accompany street children trying to survive on the streets of the capital Manila. They meet adults who are trying to help, but also encounter the forces persecuting the children.

01:15 DocFilm Guardians of the Desert - Traveling the Sahara with Camel Herders

It was once common practice to herd camels hundreds of kilometers through the desert. Now, with only a handful of herders left, the ancient art of desert navigation will soon be lost. From the south of Morocco, the great Sahara Desert extends more than a thousand kilometers into Mauritania. Hot and dry, the desert is hostile to life. Yet for centuries, camel herders have successfully traveled back and forth across this landscape, between their herd’s winter and summer camps. Today, only some thousand families remain dedicated to this traditional way of life. They breed dromedaries: domesticated, one-humped camels. Among these guardians of the old ways are the shepherds Moulay and Hadrami, both of the Oulad Ben Sbaa tribe. Their families live in the city, having abandoned the nomadic life. But Moulay and Hadrami are passionate shepherds, closely bonded to their 200 camels. In this rich documentary, the men take us along as they go about their work: arming themselves against sandstorms, preparing their herd for nightly migrations, and searching the desert’s endless expanse for lost newborn animals and their mothers. An invaluable glimpse into the hardscrabble existence of these shepherds, the film shows a way of a life that will soon cease to exist.

01:15 DocFilm Germany’s Car Industry - Powered by Politics?

The German automotive industry has long played a key role in the country's prosperity. It employs hundreds of thousands and enjoys cozy relationships with politicians. But the COVID-19 crisis threw a wrench in the works. What’s next? The prosperous German auto industry has long been lagging when it comes to innovating new automotive technologies. Then came the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the industry is turning to decision-makers for help.

But just how far will policymakers go to help the car companies? Arguing that the COVID-19 pandemic has hit them hard, the auto industry is demanding the postponement of stricter CO2 limits and a purchase premium for new vehicles. They maintain that nothing less than the prosperity of the whole country is at stake. But is Germany's success really dependent on the auto industry? And how much blame does industrial policy bear for the failures of the automotive companies?

01:15 DocFilm The Forgotten Story of Human Zoos - Crimes of the Colonial Era

For more than a century, people were taken from their homelands and exhibited in human zoos. They were displayed alongside animals. This little known and deeply disturbing part of colonial history played an important part in the development of modern racism. Between 1810 and 1940, nearly 35 thousand people were exhibited in world fairs, colonial exhibitions, zoos, freak shows, circuses and reconstructed ethnic villages in Europe, America and Japan. Some 1.5 billion visitors attended these events. Using previously unpublished archive material this documentary traces how racism was constructed and disseminated in these so-called ‘human zoos’. Children, women and men were displayed like exotic animals, and ordered in a hierarchy of "races." They were cast as ‘Other’ in a manner that served to justify colonialism, and described as ‘savage’. It is a little known and deeply disturbing part of colonial history. Only a handful of the thousands of men and women recruited from the four corners of the Earth ever managed to tell their experiences. This documentary tells the story of six of them: Tambo, an Aboriginal from ; Kalina from French Guiana; Ota Benga, a Pygmy from Congo; and Marius Kaloïe, a Kanak from New Caledonia. This documentary interviews historians and other experts to trace the connection between human zoos and racism.

This piece of human history becomes tangible through the biographies of six victims: Petite Capeline, an aboriginal of Tierra del Fuego; Tambo, an Australian aborigine; Moliko Kalina from French Guiana; Ota Benga, a pygmy from Congo; Jean Thiam, a Wolof from Senegal; and Marius Kaloie from New Caledonia. Their lives are portrayed in the historical context of the rise of the great colonial powers thanks to the work of historians and the help of their descendants. Analysis and commentary by knowledgeable experts also explore the origins of racism at the transition from supposedly scientific racism to everyday racism.

22:02 DocFilm Can Green Investment Change the World?

A new generation of investors wants to force businesses to become environmentally-friendly. Even climate conservationists know that money talks, but can green investments really save the world? Green investment rewards companies that use sustainable production practices and protect the environment. At the same time, companies that pollute or contribute to global warming are deprived of funds. The strategy converts the once secondary issue of the environment into hard, cold cash.

Antonis Schwarz is 30 years old -- and an investor, philanthropist, and activist. His slogan is "cash against climate change." Schwarz, like many other wealthy millennials, sees climate change as the key variable when it comes to investing money. These people intentionally put their cash into companies and projects that protect the environment.

Schwarz believes that those who are well-off have a special responsibility to follow this strategy. He says, "When you are able to change something and you don't, you're complicit. We all have to become fully involved, so we can prevent a climate disaster."

This philosophy can be summed up with the following question: "What's the point of having loads of money if it becomes worthless because you're living on a planet that's becoming increasingly chaotic?"

Institutional investors have more money at their disposal than wealthy private individuals do. Their approach is also changing -- and not out of pure idealism. Extreme weather events caused by climate change, for example, are bad for business. They can force corporations to write off billions in damages.

This documentary goes behind the scenes to take a closer look at the financial markets. How well does " investing" work? Can investors really move large, powerful corporations to change their strategies? Politicians have so far failed to do precisely that.

01:15 DocFilm Good Virus, Bad Virus

Viruses can be fatal, but some viruses can in fact be life-sustaining. The SARS-CoV-2 virus has killed large numbers of people during the current pandemic. But humans wouldn’t exist without viruses. How can they benefit us? Viruses aren’t living beings, yet they have had a great influence on evolution. Some viral elements have embedded themselves into the human genome and reproduce along with us - so-called endogenous retroviruses. One type of virus helps form the placenta, for example, while other viruses attack harmful bacteria. Viruses also maintain balance in marine ecosystems, curbing the growth of algae and attacking bacteria that are harmful to sea animals. Soon, viruses may even replace antibiotics in fish farming. Thousands of viruses have already been sequenced, including Ebola, Zika and bird flu. Ebola is one of the deadliest viruses in the world, with a mortality rate of up to 90%. But experts see greater danger in the less deadly diseases like Spanish flu and COVID-19: Because they spread much further, they kill more people overall. Viruses can also be used to create vaccines. In Rome, the shell of a virus found in gorilla feces has been used as a vector for the COVID-19 vaccine, turning a pathogen into a life-saving drug.

01:15 DocFilm Objectors in Israel - Choosing Prison over the Military

Like all Israeli youth, Atalya was expected to become a soldier. Unlike most, she questioned the practices of her country’s military, and was determined to challenge this rite of passage. She refused to do military duty and was imprisoned. Everyone in Atalya’s family did military service when they were young. They’re critical of her decision to fight lawmakers, and of her refusal to serve. But her courage moves others around her to question their own political positions, and to discover their power to effect change. This documentary follows Atalya through her protests and her time in military prison, offering a unique window into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the perspective of an idealistic young woman.

01:15 DocFilm Rough Ride - The Cruelty of Animal Transports

Every year, thousands of cattle are exported to countries outside the EU. It’s often a harrowing ordeal. Activists from the Animal Welfare Foundation argue that conditions in these transports breach European law. Two trucks leave a collection point at Smolensk, Russia, near the Belarus border. It’s a freezing cold winter morning. Each truck has 30 heavily pregnant cattle from Germany on board. The cows are to be part of a breeding program at their destination, Uzbekistan, which is more than 4000 kilometers away. Unbeknownst to the drivers, these trucks are being tracked by activists from the German organization Animals' Angels. Helena Bauer and her fellow campaigners are experts in this type of operation. They follow the trucks for several days and witness them driving past the designated food and water stations. By the time the trucks reach their destination, the animals are completely exhausted and covered in their own waste.

Together with animal rights activists, filmmaker Edgar Verheyen documents the conditions on these animal transports in Asia, North Africa and Europe. He also confronts politicians and authorities in the industry with his findings. How is it that haulers and cattle dealers are being allowed to break the law without consequence?

01:15 DocFilm "Reading you loud and clear..." - Voices from Behind the Iron Curtain

In 1949, at the outset of the Cold War, the BBC invited people in East Germany to send in letters. Anonymously, of course. For the next quarter of a century, on a program called Letters Without Signature, the BBC broadcast these letters, read aloud. The show, which ran until 1974, was very popular: Thousands of GDR citizens wrote to the BBC, using a series of cover addresses in West Berlin. But the program had been all but forgotten until German writer Susanne Schädlich came across it in a BBC archive a few years ago. This documentary tells the story of Cold War propaganda, and its effects on real lives both in the East and West. Where the BBC saw themselves as giving voice to the voiceless, the Stasi considered the British radio broadcast a smear campaign. As a result of the broadcast, a cat-and-mouse game developed between the BBC and the Stasi over cover addresses and code words. Postal checks conducted throughout the GDR led to the discovery and persecution of letter writers, who were threatened with drastic prison sentences. Still, people kept writing. When the BBC program’s host, Austin Harrison, made trips to the GDR, he was shadowed around the clock. Unique surveillance footage of Harrison at the Leipzig Spring Fair provides insight into the Stasi’s methods. Previously unpublished documents, photos and tape recordings, as well as archival material from British and German sources, bring to life the high-stakes propaganda clash that took place between East and West, via the radio.

22:02 DocFilm Extremism and Violence - What Children Share Online

Violent, antisemitic and pornographic content is being increasingly shared by children. It’s a growing problem in schools, but hardly anyone is willing to talk openly about it. What can be done to protect children and teenagers? We meet a lawyer who teaches children in Germany what is and isn’t allowed online. She says many of them don’t realize that what they’re sharing could be punishable by law, like swastikas and Hitler salutes. In addition, she says, children are becoming increasingly desensitized to shocking images. We also meet a 15-year-old who was investigated by the police for sharing child pornography. He says he did it for ‘shock value,’ and did not realize how morally wrong it was. Schools, meanwhile, are trying to teach students how to use social media responsibly. But it’s an uphill battle, as the internet is constantly flooded with new inappropriate content.

With a shared love for Lada Gaga, crazy wigs and glitter, four drag kids plan to conquer the stage. Not even teenagers yet, they’re already making a splash on the scene. Will their big show be a success? Drag Kids is an intimate journey into the lives of four child drag queens from around the world. Stephan, Jason, Bracken and Nemis have never met, but they’re united by a passion for drag, and they’re about to come together for the first time - to perform Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ at the world-famous Montreal Pride Festival in Canada.

As they prepare for the show, each faces their own unique challenges, as well as challenges they have in common - deep feelings of isolation and the struggle to claim a place of their own on the fringes of a fringe culture.

01:15 DocFilm The Jungle Midwives of Colombia

In the jungles of northwestern Colombia, medical care is largely unavailable. As a result, births pose a high risk. But courageous jungle midwives travel long distances to help expectant mothers in remote areas deliver their children more safely. Without midwives like Pacha, Keyla and Manuela, pregnant women living in the Departamento del Chocó in northwestern Colombia would be on their own. Here, between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes, the population is predominantly Afro-Colombian, though there are also indigenous tribes. Most people spend their lives secluded in the deep jungle, in poverty and under constant threat from paramilitary groups.

Women give birth at home in their villages, without hospitals or doctors. But for generations, assistance has arrived in the form the courageous women and men who work as so-called jungle midwives.

The film shows the daily work of three jungle midwives. At 57, Pacha is the most experienced. She makes her own medicine from what the jungle provides. But even Pacha meets with surprises: in the film, one of her patients unexpectedly gives birth to twins. Working with no medical equipment, Pacha could not have anticipated this. She has to make a split-second decision to resolve the crisis.

Pacha has been mentoring Keyla, a 28-year-old student midwife, for six months. Now, after a four hour trek through the rainforest, Keyla examines a pregnant indigenous woman for the first time on her own. Will she make the right decisions?

Activist Manuela is a qualified nurse. Ten years ago, she founded an organization dedicated to preserving the jungle midwives’ age-old traditions, while familiarizing them with science-based medicine. Once a month she visits the remote villages to train jungle midwives.

The job of the jungle midwives is very difficult. But they are proud of the courage and commitment it takes to help bring new life and happiness to the people of an extremely poor region of Colombia.

01:15 DocFilm Tsunamis - Danger from the Depths

Tsunamis are among the deadliest natural phenomena on earth. Tidal waves can reach a speed of 800 kilometers per hour and rise meters above the coast. Despite early warning systems, there is hardly any protection for coastal inhabitants. Tsunamis, large sea waves up to several hundred kilometers in length, are among the most destructive events in nature. They are usually triggered by seaquakes or landslides and transport the energy released there at speeds of hundreds of kilometers per hour over thousands of kilometers to the coasts. The word tsunami is derived from Japanese and is composed of the words "tsu" - meaning harbour - and "nami" - meaning wave. More and more people are living in risk zones threatened by tsunamis, in coastal areas where urbanization is progressing rapidly. How can the tsunami risk be better assessed in the future? How can coastal inhabitants protect and better prepare themselves? The devastating tidal waves in Indonesia in 2004 and Japan in 2011 reached a height of around 13 meters. Thanks to the many video recordings and on-site research projects, scientists have been able to gain a better understanding of tsunamis and their dynamics - and one thing is certain: there will be more of them. Since the tragic events of 2004 and 2011, researchers have been trying to devise an accurate, timely, and global tsunami forecast system. By interviewing tsunami survivors and using 3D simulations, scientists reconstruct how tsunamis spread and what physical forces are at work.

01:15 DocFilm Syndrome K - The Imaginary Disease that Saved Lives

"Syndrome K" might be the only deadly disease that ever saved lives. Despite the fact that it never really existed.

This film tells the story of three courageous Roman Catholic doctors who saved Jewish lives at a hospital in Rome by means of a convincing lie: they told the Nazis their patients were infected with a highly fatal and contagious disease called Syndrome K. This incredible story takes place during the Nazi occupation of Rome in October 1943. As Jewish people were being deported to Auschwitz, some Jews sought refuge in the Fatebenefratelli hospital. There, the doctors invented a disease to protect them. Advising their patients to fake symptoms, including coughing, when Nazi officers arrived to carry out inspections, these doctors declared the ward far too contagious for the soldiers to enter. The ruse worked.

Jewish survivors and one of the Italian doctors who carried out the plan were interviewed for this film. In combination with archival footage, these accounts make for a chilling, heroic WWII story.

01:15 DocFilm Island of the White Antelope - Abu Dhabi’s Natural Oasis

The Arabian oryx is a beautiful, almost luminously white antelope. But, after being over-hunted by humans in the 20th century, it only narrowly escaped extinction. Today, on the desert island of Sir Bani Yas, the endangered animals find refuge. Part of an archipelago west of Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas is home to a large wildlife reserve, where animals from Arabia, Asia and Africa roam freely. You can watch cheetahs hunting, and imagine how the Bedouins once lived, under open desert skies. Established in the 1970s, extensive ecological measures turned Sir Bani Yas into a man-made "paradise for wild animals." Now, the reserve stands for the region’s desire for a sustainable future. It’s also a great place to see the magnificent Arabian oryx running free, once more.

22:02 DocFilm From Vogtland to Pennsylvania - Martin Guitars: 200 Years of Excellence

Countless music stars have used Martin guitars to play their way to fame. These legendary instruments originated in the town of Markneukirchen in Germany's Vogtland region in the early 1800s, and they are still enormously popular . Bob Dylan played one. So did Elvis and Bob Marley. Paul McCartney, Sting, Dolly Parton, Joan Baez, Ed Sheeran, David Crosby, and Wolfgang Niedecken (of the German band BAP) have all played Martin guitars. Eric Clapton even triggered a run on these instruments with his legendary 1992 "Unplugged" concert. These artists and many more are part of Martin's amazing history of success.

Nearly 200 years ago, the guitar's inventor, Christian Friedrich Martin, was coping with working conditions that many people would recognize today: bureaucracy, aggressive business competitors, small-minded people. Martin realized that he could not fully realize his creative potential if he stayed in his native state of Saxony -- so in 1833, he moved to the United States. Since then, six generations of the Martin family have been making guitars at the company's factory in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

Martin instruments arrived on the scene at precisely the right time. Guitar music was becoming more popular -- and customers demanded an instrument that could be heard more easily in concert halls and other venues. Traditional acoustic guitars were often drowned out onstage by fiddles, banjos, and pianos. Martin responded by developing an internal bracing system for the body of the guitar. This allowed guitarists to use steel strings, which created a louder sound.

After Martin's death in 1873, his son Christian Friedrich Jr. and grandson Christian Friedrich III continued to expand the company's production of guitars. The company also introduced a number of design innovations, including the "dreadnaught" body.

Christian Friedrich's descendants are proud of their family's heritage. The company's current CEO is C.F. Martin IV. He has made several trips to Markneukirchen, the site of the original Martin workshop. There's a museum in the town that documents the development of musical instruments, and it features an exhibit of rare guitars. Several of the instruments on display were donated by the Martin family.

01:15 DocFilm Sri Lanka - The Dark Side of Paradise

The pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka, is a popular tourist destination. Nevertheless, but behind its natural treasures and pristine beaches, the country is still recovering from more than 25 years of civil war. Between 1983 and 2009, the island was torn apart by a bloody conflict between two communities: the Sinhalese Buddhist majority and the mostly Hindu Tamils, including the separatist rebels known as the Tamil Tigers. They aimed to establish their own state in the north and east of the country.

More than a decade on, the army is once more in control, but the north of the country remains off-limits to tourists.

01:15 DocFilm A Deadly Legacy - Chemical Weapons in Germany

Tabun, sarin, phosgene and mustard gas are chemical warfare agents invented to kill. They were carelessly disposed of after Germany lost two world wars. Still buried or underwater in many places, they have become a public-health time bomb. According to weapons disposal experts, there are at least 200 places in Germany where chemical warfare agents are stored. They were carelessly buried or sunk, and are now a ticking time-bomb. In the 100 years since the end of the First World War, policymakers have largely sought to keep this deadly legacy out of sight, because dealing with it would could billions. But experts agree that if we do not tackle the problem now, it will become increasingly dangerous and will continue to plague future generations. During World War One and World War Two, Germany was one of the world's largest producers of chemical weapons. Substances like tabun, sarin, phosgene, diphenylchloroarsine and mustard gas were produced in huge quantities. The goal was to kill or demoralize the enemy in exceptionally cruel ways. After the wars, the chemical agents as well as factories and distribution facilities were supposed to have been destroyed as quickly as possible. In many places, the chaotic aftermath of war meant that disposal was often not recorded in writing or documented with photographs. One of the most unsettling places is Dethlinger Pond near Münster on the Lüneburg Heath. Experts say it may be the "most poisonous hole in the world." After World War Two, British occupying forces as well as German authorities indiscriminately threw in whatever they found near the local chemical weapons factory and other stockpiles. The amount of chemical weapons there is still unknown, but it’s certain to be in the thousands. Almost nothing was documented, and later, the pond was simply filled in. Seventy-five years after the end of the World War Two, authorities have finally gathered the courage and determination to take action, partly due to pressure from protesters. As the pond is excavated under strict security measures, it soon becomes clear that the situation is far worse than feared. Dethlinger Pond is just one of many locations in Germany that still harbor these dark, toxic and often dangerous secrets. The chemical warfare industry was widespread throughout the country. Whoever believes that these places are all guarded or protected by authorities is mistaken. Often, buildings were simply constructed on top of contaminated areas, something that seems unthinkable today.

01:15 DocFilm China's Cities - The Competition for Living Space

More than 60 percent of China's population of 1.4 billion currently lives in cities. Within a decade, the share of urban dwellers is expected to increase to 75 percent. Construction is booming and competition for residential land is fierce. But the right to live in a city in China is conditional. Authorities want their modern cities to be peopled with well-educated, highly-qualified or politically well-connected residents. As a result, certain standards have to be met to be eligible for a modern, urban home. Only members of China's political classes and the financially successful have a hope of qualifying. Yet more than half of the people who live in cities are so-called "migrant workers." They come from rural communities and have no official rights to settle in cities. They are there to work. With no proper rights, they are merely tolerated while they serve as merchants, servants, waitstaff, cleaners, construction workers and tradespeople. But while they are indispensible to daily life in the cities, they are unable to afford their exorbitant rents. This documentary looks at how and where these workers live, and asks whether middle and working class Chinese even figure in the official vision of shiny, high-tech cities. The filmmakers also look at what happens to those who oppose official plans, or stand in the way of the building boom.

22:02 DocFilm Good News from the Blue Planet

When it comes to water, it’s hard not to think of catastrophes: drought, overfishing, water wars. But on closer examination, there’s some surprisingly good news out there in the world of water. Take Las Vegas, a desert city that is becoming a role model when it comes to water conservation. Or the Andalusian fish farm that works sustainably, without antibiotics. Or Germany’s Emscher river: for decades one of the dirtiest tributaries in a once-heavily industrial region, today the waterway is clean, and a popular destination for tourist excursions.

Indeed, wherever problems arise and crisis is omnipresent, there are also people - scientists, activists, entrepreneurs - who are hard at work on solutions that succeed, again and again.

01:15 DocFilm Lone Wolf Terrorism - How Outsiders Become Assassins

On 9 October 2019, Neo-Nazi Stephan Balliet set out on a killing spree. His target was the Jewish community in Halle in eastern Germany. A well-locked synagogue door prevented dozens of murders on the holiest day of the Jewish year, Yom Kippur. The assassin was described as a lone wolf. Not a single security authority had the right-wing extremist on their radar. Stephan Balliet shot two people dead and injured two others during the attack, which he live streamed online using a helmet camera. He managed to prepare for the attack completely undetected. There’s been a sharp rise in so-called "lone wolf terrorism" in recent years. Individual perpetrators become radicalized online and justify their murders with fascist manifestos. In Christchurch, New Zealand, a far-right assailant killed 51 people in two mosques and injured 50 more, some of them seriously. The mass shooting near Munich’s Olympia shopping mall in 2016 followed a similar pattern. The "lone wolves" and their followers socialize in anonymous internet forums. The manner of their attacks is constantly evolving, for example with the use of live streaming. But how deep does this network run? Security forces are often poorly positioned in the virtual world, and they’re forced to work at a regional or national level to try to tackle the global phenomenon. This documentary delves into the world of the lone wolves and explores the mechanisms behind this radicalization.
