  • I Have Been Working on a Book, Stand-Ins, on The
Workshop Participants: I have been working on a book, Stand-Ins, on the causes and consequences of temporary leadership in government, business, and religion, which is aimed at a more general audience. Given recent events, I have returned to more traditional scholarship to explore some of the issues involving temporary leadership (and the lack thereof) in federal agencies, among other topics. This paper is brand new, incomplete, and unpolished. Given its length, I would recommend reading the Introduction (pp.1-5), Scope of Actings (pp.13-27), and Statutory Questions (pp.33-42). I look forward to your reactions and suggestions for improvement. AJO Actings Anne Joseph O’Connell Stanford Law School April 1, 2019 Please do not cite or distribute beyond the workshop without permission. I. Introduction Stand-in leaders do not usually command much attention. They step up in moments of need to keep organizations running. The stereotypical interim leader is therefore a caretaker—in place to maintain stability; not to implement major changes. But not all interim leaders are caretakers. Some are auditioning for the permanent job. And a few are there to shake up the organization—so-called “fixers”. The scope of temporary leadership is vast—after all, traditional leaders are transitory, and selection procedures for more permanent leaders take time. On the public side, there are interim leaders in all branches of the federal government. In Congress, there are appointed senators, chosen by their state’s governor to fill in for an elected senator who has died or resigned, perhaps in disgrace or perhaps to take a different job.

Trump President The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., NW Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President: I want to thank you for your tremendous support for our American energy industry and your leadership during the current public health and economic crises. The Gulf of Mexico plays an integral role in producing the energy to fuel America and in Louisiana, our communities are the epicenter for servicing this offshore oil and gas industry. Now, during these unprecedented times we need your bold leadership to save over 500,000 jobs that are directly tied to the offshore oil and gas industry. Our Association… Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce 6133 Hwy 311 Houma, LA 70360 Louisiana supports 17% of our nation’s energy production and we serve as the epicenter for servicing the offshore oil and gas industry in the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana is home to many small and medium-sized companies who provide the goods and services to the offshore oil and gas companies and depend on a healthy and thriving offshore industry. In Louisiana 50,000 jobs are at risk. The demise of the offshore oil and gas industry is having a direct and severe impact on our service companies. Since the decline in oil and gas prices, our local businesses have had to make drastic cost reductions. And now today, due to the current crises many of Louisiana’s local service companies are taking draconian measures, such as laying off or furloughing employees, just to stay in business.

  • Booksellers, the First Amendment, and Controversial Texts
January 2020 Tuesday Topic: Booksellers, The First Amendment, and Controversial Texts Welcome to Tuesday Topics, a monthly series covering topics with intellectual freedom implications for libraries of all types. Each message is prepared by a member of OLA's Intellectual Freedom Committee or a guest writer. Questions can be directed to the author of the topic or to the IFC Committee. Booksellers, the First Amendment, and Controversial Texts In the wake of the January 6th attack on the US Capitol, at least two booksellers have either elected to remove titles related to white supremacist violence from sale, or been pressed to do so by concerned citizens. Amazon.com has removed The Turner Diaries from its store, along with merchandise associated with the group QAnon, citing violation of its terms of service. The Turner Diaries, which was published in 1978 by William Luther Pierce under the pseudonym Andrew Macdonald, depicts a fictional coup in the US conducted by an underground group of white supremacists. It has been cited as a foundational text by modern racist and white nationalist groups, most famously in relation to the 1995 bombing of the Federal building in Oklahoma City. The availability of Andy Ngo’s forthcoming book, Unmasked: Inside Antifa's Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy, on the Powell’s Books website was the subject of protests in Portland during the week following the Capitol attack, as well. Powell’s has chosen to continue to sell the book through its online store, but will not carry physical copies of the books on its shelves. In an open letter published on the Powell’s website, President and owner Emily Powell cited the bookstore’s continued support of freedom of speech and public discourse in the decision to retain the title.

Why everyone hates Big Tech, with The Verge's Nilay Patel - The Weeds - Air Date 7-19-19 NILAY PATEL: [00:00:34] I think one thing everyone will agree on, just universally, is that these companies are not necessarily well-run. And even if they were perfectly run, the nature of wriAng and enforcing speech regulaAon is such that you're sAll gonna do a bad job. The United States has been trying to develop a free speech policy in our courts for 220+ years and we're preVy bad at it, but four guys at Facebook aren't going to do a good job up in 20 years. So there's that problem, where does the line cross from being a preVy funny joke to being overtly bigoted? It really depends on context. We all understand this. So it absolutely depends on the context. It depends on who you think you are speaking to, whether it's a group of your friends or whether suddenly TwiVer's algorithm grabs you and amplifies you to millions of people.

  • INTERIOR Energy Companies Paid Bernhardt More Than $80K Last Year
INTERIOR Energy companies paid Bernhardt more than $80K last year Corbin Hiar, E&E News reporter Published: Thursday, May 11, 2017 David Bernhardt filed documents ahead of his confirmation hearing to be Interior deputy secretary that said he will recuse himself for a year from issues involving companies he had lobbied for. Photo courtesy of Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck LLP. Interior deputy secretary nominee David Bernhardt earned at least $80,000 last year working for a host of energy and environmental interests, disclosure forms show. He agreed to recuse himself for one year from matters involving any of the companies as well as other former clients of his or his law firm, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck LLP. The documents Bernhardt filed in order to advance through the confirmation process were signed off on earlier this week by the Interior Department's top ethics official. Bernhardt's financial disclosure report was filed with the independent Office of Government Ethics on March 6, more than a month before the White House formally nominated him for Interior's second-highest post (Greenwire, April 28). The disclosures show Bernhardt made more than $1.1 million last year from Brownstein Hyatt, where he is a partner, and a holding company of the law firm. The disclosure report lists the following clients as paying him at least $5,000 for his legal services in 2016: Targa Resources Co. LLC, Noble Energy Co. LLC, NRG Energy Inc., Sempra Energy, Lafarge North America - Western Region, Safari Club International Foundation, Active Network LLC, Statoil Gulf Services LLC, Cobalt International Energy, Rosemont Copper Co., Independent Petroleum Association of America, Taylor Energy Co.

  • Trump Says One Thing and Does Another on Criminal Justice by Lea Hunter, Ed Chung, and Akua Amaning
FACT SHEET Trump Says One Thing and Does Another on Criminal Justice By Lea Hunter, Ed Chung, and Akua Amaning This factsheet contains an update. Note: An earlier version of this list appeared in American Progress’s Infographic: President Trump is Falsely Claiming He is a Criminal Justice Reformer. President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed ownership of criminal reform because he signed the FIRST STEP Act—a bipartisan federal sentencing and prison reform bill. A month after signing the bill, he proclaimed, “I did criminal justice reform, nobody else. I did it. Without me, you don’t have criminal justice reform.” In fall 2019, he again declared, “I did criminal justice reform, which President Obama could not get approved—which the media never talks about. If President Obama got criminal justice reform done, it would be front-page stories all over the place. I got it done.”1 But these claims fly in the face of nearly every action this administration has taken, most of which are antithetical to reform efforts. Too often, the full context of the Trump administration’s record on criminal jus- tice reform is obscured by celebrities visiting the White House and award ceremo- nies.2 However, behind the scenes, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) regularly contravenes the efforts of the criminal justice reform movement. Collected here are a list of those anti-reform actions to date: 1. Restricted clemency to only those who are celebrities, well-connected individuals, or have a personal affiliation with the president3* 2. Encouraged the use of excessive police force on peaceful Black Lives Matter protestors4* 3.

  • {PDF EPUB} the Israeli Solution a One-State Plan for Peace in the Middle East by Caroline B
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Israeli Solution A One-State Plan for Peace in the Middle East by Caroline B. Glick The Israeli Solution: A One-State Plan for Peace in the Middle East by Caroline B. Glick. The endgame for Mahmoud Abbas is the destruction of Israel. Caroline Glick’s latest book, "The Israeli Solution, a One-State Plan for Peace in the Middle East", carefully explains the political, legal, demographic, and military position of Israel in the modern world. She corrects many faulty notions that are prevalent about Israel. The reader learns from her that Israel was not created as an emotional reaction by a world horrified by the Holocaust. Its legitimacy and destiny as a State is grounded in historical and political realities that antedate the Holocaust, and in the prayerful longings of the Jewish people to be restored to and to rule their own homeland after dispossession by the vengeful Romans 20 centuries ago. Although she does not place much emphasis on the visionary and incredibly determined work of Theodore Herzl and Chaim Weizman, their vision is foundational and cannot be separated from the existence of present-day Israel. Rather, she derives Israel’s right to exist primarily from three sources: the continued presence of Jews in the territory now called Israel for 2000 years, the Palestine Mandate to the British, and from the British after World War I, and U.N. Resolution 181 which established the state of Israel (as a Jewish state). With amazing logic and compelling detail, she depicts every phase and aspect of Israel’s struggle to come into existence and remain in existence from 1920 until the present.

Fourth Biennial EAAS Women’s Network Symposium Feminisms in American Studies in/and Crisis: Where Do We Go from Here? April 28 and 29, 2021 BOOK OF ABSTRACTS EAAS Women’s Network [email protected] http://women.eaas.eu IN COLLABORATION WITH 2 INTERSECTIONAL FEMINISM AND LITERATURE: THINKING THROUGH “UGLY FEELINGS”? Gabrielle Adjerad In light of what has been institutionalized in the nineties as “intersectionality” (Crenshaw, 1989), but emanated from a long tradition of feminism fostered by women of color (Hill-Collins, Bilge, 2016), feminist theory has increasingly shed light on the plurality of women’s experiences, the inseparable, overlapping and simultaneous differences constituting their identities, and the materiality of the various dominations engendered. At the turn of the twenty-first century, this paradigm seems compelling to address fictional diasporic narratives addressing the diverse discriminations encountered by migrant women and their descendants in the United States. However, adopting an intersectional feminist approach of literature, for research or in the classroom, raises methodological issues that this paper contends with. Some thinkers have considered the double pitfall of considering, on the one hand, the text as a mimetic document of plural lives and, on the other, of essentializing a symbolical “écriture feminine” (Felski, 1989). Some have highlighted the necessary critical movement between the archetypal dimension of gender and the social and historical individuals diversely affected by this ideology (De Lauretis, 1987). Yet, beyond this tension between an attention paid to abstraction on the one hand and experience on the other, we can consider that hegemony is made of different ideologies that may contradict one another (Balibar, Wallerstein, 1991).
