•~i9bUlslaj~~ja• VOL Xii NO 2 WAHPETON HOSTS 7 LAG JULY 8-11 !IAr'r1ERICA.FEVERll THEME DRAWS ACTORS + NORSK ENTERTAINERS

Historical drama and two groups from make 7 Lag Stevne plans very promising for July 9-11 at Wahpeton, ND. Genealogy research opens at 10 am Thursday and continues to 10 pm for those registered, continuing Friday from 8 am til noon.

This year the theme is "AMERIKA FEBER," the malady of ancestors who wanted to try life in a new country across the Atlantic. Contagion spread more rapidly for those whose futures included no rights to inherit property or in homes where there were already too many to feed, especially in the later 1800s. It was the 'fever' to board a ship for America with many promises, even if not all were true.

Episodes based on E. Palmer Rockswold's book, PER, will be dramatized Friday evening to highlight the chosen theme. Following the play, there will be dancing in the Redwood Room with seating and soft drinks available in the "Hub". Music will be provided by the Eivind Lundby Orchestra of Loten, Norway--across Lake Mj0sa from Toten.

Lag members will want to see the 1st showing of "SIGDAL", a gift videotape. It will be shown Saturday morning when individual groups meet from 9-3: 30 pm (approx). An afternoon showing at 2 is tentatively planned for those with membership in more than one lag.

Pre-registration numbers largely determine which room is assigned, and anyone with an ancestor in sigdal, , or Krodsherad is invited to send in the form on page 11. This allows name tags to be completed and assures that tickets will be available for the banquet. Guests are especially welcome.

Solveig Bilstad, a Kr¢dsherad teacher with roots, is expected to lead a tour group from "fylke". Among them will be Folk Dancers who perform Saturday evening when all those owning "bunader" (exquisite folk dress) wear them to the banquet & program.

Cultural sessions are also offered Friday morning, and the opening session for everyone is at 1:30 pm. Your badge will be held at Siqdal Lag Registration in the Student Center. It does not admit you to meals, but it allows you to take part in all other events.

Housing reservations, paid in full, are to arrive at North Dakota State College of Science two weeks in advance. As a reminder: NO cookies are solicited from members this year! MARILYN SOMDAHL, Pres/Editor 612/831-4409 10129 Goodrich Circle Bloomington, MN 55437

After she graduated she took a year of teacher training to be a teacher in swift and Kandiyohi County's rural schools. She began this career at 18. She married Harvey Johnson who owned & operated a trucking firm in 1946.

By 1960 they had four children who moved with them from Kerkoven, MN to Richfield. There Corrine began taking evening extension classes from st Cloud State which she found stimulating. She commuted to st Cloud summers for the next three years to enable her to teach again.

"Armed with a B.S. in Elementary Education, I began the first of 23 years in Burnsville-Savage-Eagan Schools," she writes. After varied experience with remedial reading and learning disabilities with both elementary & junior high groups, she began earning an M.S. in Special Education from the U of MN, awarded in 1975.

"My husband suffered his first heart attack in 1962. After subsequent attacks, he was completely disabled at 50. Our roles reversed: I was the full-time employee, and he got the children off to school, took phone calls, and shopped for groceries."

After Harvey's death in 1983, Corrine found living alone difficult, so she moved from their home to a Bloomington condo where she still lives. "I've (now) had five wonderful retirement years to pursue ...increased travel and family history research." She left for six weeks in Europe in April and will return in June. She'll visit relatives in & Norway. Through her father, Nestor Lesteberg, she is connected to Kr0dsherad where she will attend confirmation at Olberg Church June 8.

Paternal genealogy pursuits began in 1977 after her father's death. His parents, Narve Olssen Lesteberg ~ Ingeborg Gulbrandsdtr Kvarneplassen, came to the US in 1872. "Grandma grew up where the "kvarne" (mill) was located in Rundskogen near Lesteberg farm on the west bank of Lake Kr~deren. Family saeters (summer pastures & cabins) are side by side on the mountain, . Descendants occupy both farms. Visiting them has been an inexplicable pleasure--one I wish I could have experienced with my father."

Corr ine Iinks to Hardanger through her mother's side, and her fami Iy questions were well answered. She is organizing what she learned with the help of a computer & Roots III software.

Family activities are especially welcome summers & holidays at her Wisconsin cabin. Her children followed careers in accounting or education. Two daughters live on Wisconsin farms, another lives at Savage, and her son works in missions in Zaire, Africa. All are married and there are seven grandchildren.

Corrine, elected 2nd Vice President of Sigdal Lag last July, volunteers in the genealogy room. She is active in church work as well as 10 heritage groups. Besides that, she tutors illiterate adults! SKADELAND HAS MAP; WILL TRAVEL

Sigdal Lag's 1st Vice President, Don Skadeland, took early retirement on his 57th birthday, June 30, 1989, after an "enjoyable and fUlfilling" career of 35 years. He and his wife Lynn "love to travel" but he also participates in church, civic and ethnic groups.

His paternal great grandfather, Helge Halvorson Skadeland (1843-1934), appeared as a Sigdal Lag member in the 1914 yearbook, pp 143-144. As the third son in a family of 10, Helge was the first of four to emigrate to the US from Eggedal. He settled west of Decorah, IA in April 1865, marrying Anne N. Rugland of Eggedal, in 1867. One of their five children was Don's grandfather Gunder.

Anne died in 1874, and in 1878 Helge moved to homestead in Dakota Territory --about five miles north of Portland, ND. He married Eli H. Ansten of Decorah in March 1880. Eli's roots were also in Eggedal, and this marriage produced 11 children. Eli died Christmas Eve, 1909, while Helge continued farming and lived to age 91.

Don and Lynn visited Norway in 1987, spending five days on the farm Helge left in 1865. "My third cousin, Torstein Skalland, was our host ..in a new house a short distance down the mountain from the original. He took us around the area and we met many relatives," many of whom correspond at Christmas.

Henry Berg, Portland, OR, wrote Don that Helge and both wives were descendants of Gunder Aslesen of Gronhovd & Kopseng in Eggedal. He may be related to 25% of the lag membership!

Don was born in Minot, ND to Spencer ~ Berniece Skadeland who once lived in a coal miners' camp near Velva, ND. They lived in other small towns and spent two years on Gunder's farm near Sawyer. In 1950 Don graduated from Landa High School. He attended NDSCS at Wahpeton 2 years and earned a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from NDSU at Fargo, in 1954.

"I immediately went to work for the Corps of Engineers in Omaha. In January, 1956, the last assignment of a two year training program took me to the area office--for construction of Oahe Dam near Pierre, SD. Knowing that my lifestyle needed a change, the good Lord brought Lynn, the office switchboard operator, into my life. We married in June."

When the children were home, Don & Lynn took them camping in their travels. Their son Dean is a V.A. neuropsychologist in Kansas City, MO. He and his wife Linda are parents of the only.grandchild, Glori Lyn. Their daughter Sandy married Tim Kloth. They live in Wichita, KS where she is a dental hygenist.

His parents in their mid-80s live in Omaha, as do Don & Lynn. There Don invests time in Bible study, the Gideon ministry, Sons of Norway and Kiwanis Club. But they would like to return to the Holy Land--their last "big trip" in 1990-- which also included Egypt and . A translation of G. Halmrast's Christmas letter (back cover of the 5th annual calendar) follows:

For the 5th year in a row Kredsherad Kommune sends a Christmas greeting to its residents in the fonn of a calendar.

This calendar goes also as a little greeting to our friends in Marilyn Somdahl Sigdal Lag in America, and the mayor wishes all of them a 10129 Goodrich Circle MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! Bloomington, MN 55437 As in previous years,' it is the photo committee who has worked with the calendar, and these people are now elected to the editorial staff. The mayor gets this chance to immediately thank these three. (Helga 0degard, Bodil Granum & Ragne Hansen)

As most of you already know, this is the last Christmas greeting I am sending as your mayor.

I will, in this counection, take this opportunity to thank for pleasant cooperation with the kommune's inhabitants during my time as the district's political leader.

Allow me, in conclusion, to wish our new mayor and his political allies and adversaries "good luck" in their work, and to hope that we will continue to have a good and safe district to live in.

I hereby thank for myself as mayor and I'll wish everyone living in Kredsherad a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

With friendly greetings, KR0DSHERAD KOMMUNE s/Gudbrand Halmrast, Sr. Ordferer
