Roger Cukierman Awarded A Third Term As President Of The CRIF The Conseil Représentatif des Institutions juives de France (CRIF) that acts as the umbrella representative body for all the Jewish organizations in France has chosen Cukierman to take up the role for an unprecedented third time. In the turbulent times that the Jewish community in France, currently believed to number around 600,000, is going through at present, Cukierman will need to call upon all his knowledge and experience to help keep the community together. That is why the veteran Parisian was probably elected by the General Assembly, after a second round of voting, taking preference, with 61 percent of the votes against the 39 percent that opted for Aria Bensemhoun, current leader of the Jewish community of Toulouse. More than 72 CRIF member associations took part in the election. Now 76 years old, Roger Cukierman has been handed a three-year presidential mandate, replacing Richard Prasquier who has completed two consecutive terms ended in May. It was Prasquier who actually replaced Cukierman in 2007, after he too had completed two consecutive terms as president of the CRIF. Cukierman comes into the role the wealth of life and financial experience held a senior executive position in the banking group Edmond de Rothschild. The new/old president was voted in on the stated mandate to help the Jewish community of France to stand up in their relentless, constant and determined fight against anti-Semitism and the respect of memory. “I want a CRIF that is stronger, strictly independent and open to the civil society as a whole,” Cukierman was reported as saying when he was elected The CRIF was formed in 1944 by the Jewish community in France Nazi occupation, and includes the majority of the major Jewish organizations in the country, with the notable exception of the Central Consistory who parted with the institution in 2004. Meanwhile Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress (EJC), offers his congratulations to Roger Cukierman, on his appointment stating that Mr. Cukierman represents a wealth of knowledge and experience which will be necessary for French Jewry in the years ahead,” “Roger has represented French Jewry in the past and we look forward to working closely with him as we face many challenges ahead.” Kantor summed up CRIF is as an affiliate national organization of the EJC, the democratically-elected representative body of European Jewry, as well as being closely affiliated with the World Jewish Congress. It is common practice that it’s incumbent president is automatically given the role of a vice-president of the WJC Conseil Représentatif des Institutions juives de France Roger Cukierman also holds the role as treasurer of the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah in France / By Stanley Green / .

In his speech to delegates, Lauder emphasized Diaspora Jewry‘s unwavering support for the State of Israel, especially in the face of threats by terrorist organizations. He criticized countries and international bodies such as the United Nations for applying ―double standards‖ when it comes to Israel and not providing enough support. Eduardo Elsztain, a Jewish leader from Argentina was elected new chairman of the WJC Governing Board, succeeding Matthew Bronfman. "At the minute, the potential investors are European, including Frenchmen," he said. "Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with some of them during his visit to London." Cukierman declined to give details about his planned consortium, but many of the potential members are apparently institutional investors, since he said he hopes the government will allow up to 49 percent of each bidding consortium to be composed of institutions. "Currently, there is permission only for 25 percent [of a consortium to be composed of] institutions, but we have received good indications that there is willingness to change this," he said. The Cukierman family is believed to be one of the richest in France. The father, Roger Cukierman, was considered Edmond de Rothschild's right hand for more than 20 years, and served in the past as both CEO of the Edmond de Rothschild Group and CEO of the Israel General Bank. He currently heads CRIF, French Jewry's umbrella organization. Edouard Cukierman lives in Israel with his family, and in addition to running Cukierman & Co. - which specializes in helping Israeli firms raise capital in Europe and develop relationships with leading European institutions - he has also set up two venture capital funds, Catalyst 1 and Catalyst 2, which invest in Israeli high-tech.

13TH PLENARY ASSEMBLY of the WORLD JEWISH CONGRESS JERUSALEM, 26-27 JANUARY 2009 REGIONAL REPORTS European Jewish Congress EUROPEAN JEWISH CONGRESS REPORT September 2008 – January 2009 WJC Governing Board Ashkelon, 24 September 2008 Around 150 delegates and observers from Jewish communities from around the world and from affiliated international Jewish organizations traveled to Ashkelon for this meeting. In his keynote speech, WJC President Ronald S. Lauder urged support for Israel notably in the face of the increasing Iranian threat and of the dangers posed by Iranian-backed terrorist groups. Maj. Gen. Yoav Galant, commander of the Israel Defense Forces Southern Command, briefed delegates on the security situation in the area, and participants were later taken on a tour and shown security installations, including an IDF base. Inter-faith outreach activities were also discussed by the Governing Board members, and delegates resolved to give priority to such efforts on the level of national Jewish communities. The WJC also launched a program to increase the representation of young Jewish leaders on its main bodies. The Governing Board also decided to hold the next Plenary Assembly of the World Jewish Congress in January 2009, in Jerusalem. EUROPEAN JEWISH DIGEST: LOOKING AT THE HEADLINES ACROSS JEWISH EUROPE NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2014 1 / VIOLENCE IN FRANCE November and December saw a major deterioration in the situation of Jews in France with some very disturbing and violent events. In mid-November a firebomb was thrown at a kosher bagel and sushi bar in an up-market district of Paris. The fire was quickly extinguished. Just a few hours after this attempted arson, a young Jewish teenager was assaulted outside a school in the 3rd arrondissement. According the National Bureau for Vigilance against Antisemitism (BNVCA), the victim was wearing a kippah when a group of about 15 youths of African descent attacked him. In early December, three armed assailants broke into an apartment in the Paris suburb of Creteil and raped a 19 year-old Jewish woman whilst physically restraining her partner. They also robbed the couple and withdrew money from a cash machine. The victims said that the attackers told them that they should not try to pretend they do not have money because they knew they were Jewish. Police managed to arrest all three of the suspected assailants and are also linking them to an attack on a 70- year-old Jewish man who was badly beaten at his Creteil home earlier in November. Western Europe Great Britain National Affairs I-,N JANUARY, Peter Mandelson, Prime Minister Tony Blair's friend and political mentor, resigned for the second time, again because he concealed his dealings with a wealthy man. Despite predictions of trouble for a Labor government facing an imminent election, the party and the government emerged virtually unscathed. Chancellor Gordon Brown's budget, presented in March, which pro- posed modest tax cuts and increased spending for such purposes as the National Health Service, public transportation, and education, created a favorable atmosphere: the chancellor earned higher approval ratings than any of his postwar predecessors, and half the electorate thought Labor the party most able to cope with economic difficulties (the opposition Conservatives scored only 31 percent on the economy). The general election, held in May, confimed this assessment. Labor once again won overwhelmingly, with 413 seats against 166 for the Con- servatives and 52 for the Liberal Democrats. Despite its victory, Labor was not as popular as the bare election results suggested, as the two lead- ing opposition parties attracted 50 percent of the votes cast, as against 40.8 percent for Labor. Only the vagaries of the voting system secured Labor its large overall majority of seats. An immediate result of the elec- tion was the resignation of Tory leader William Hague, precipitating an election for new party leadership that brought the relatively unknown Iain Duncan Smith to office as head of the opposition. At the end of the year neither the new Conservative leader nor his shadow cabinet had made much of an impact.

EUROPEAN JEWISH DIGEST: LOOKING AT THE HEADLINES ACROSS JEWISH EUROPE VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2: FEBRUARY 2015 1 / DEADLY ATTACKS IN COPENHAGEN Following the tragic shootings at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and the kosher supermarket Hypercacher in Paris last month, February saw similar deadly acts of violence in Copenhagen, Denmark. On Saturday afternoon on February 14th a gunman attacked an event at a cultural centre where a debate on the issue of freedom of expression was taking place. During the shooting, Omar el- Hussein, 22, a Dane of Palestinian descent, killed film director Finn Nørgaard and wounded three policemen. Later that night el-Hussein made his way to Copenhagen’s main synagogue where a bat mitzvah celebration was taking place. There he opened fire with an automatic weapon, killing Dan Uzan, a 37-year-old Jewish voluntary security guard and wounding two police officers. The following morning Danish police killed el-Hussein in a shootout. As in Paris, the Copenhagen Jewish community has been gripped with anxiety. In a visit to the synagogue the following day, Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said that Denmark “will do everything” it can to protect its Jewish community. At a news conference she announced that “Jews are a very important part of Danish society. I say to the Jewish community – you are not alone.” Dan Rosenberg Asmussen, a spokesman for the local Jewish community, said “we are of course in shock, one of our young members died last night. I'm shocked. There has never been so much police on the street, all heavily armed, near the synagogue, and despite this a man shoots at a synagogue.
