The existence of butterflies can not be separated from the condition of the habitat. Pentingsari Hamlet is one of the tourist villages with various types of habitats that can support the survival of butterflies. This study aims to determine the diversity and dominance of butterflies (Lepidoptera) in Pentingsari Hamlet. This research was an explorative research. Data collection was conducted from March to April 2018 in Pentingsari Hamlet. Sampling was done by the method of cruising (pollard walk). The study area was divided into two quadrants. Butterflies were caught using a net and identified based on morphological analysis. The data obtained were analyzed for its diversity using the Shannon- Weinner diversity index and its dominance using Simpson's dominance index. The results showed that the index of diversity of butterflies in Pentingsari Hamlet consisted of 35 species belonging to 21 genera and 5 families, namely Papilionidae with 2 genera and 5 species; Pieridae with 4 genus and 8 species; Nymphalidae with 13 genus and 19 species; Lycaenidae with 1 genus and 1 species; and Hesperidae with 1 genus and 1 species. The index of diversity of butterflies in Pentingsari Hamlet was high with the value of H '3.172366 and the low dominance index is D 0.050318 which meant no dominant species. The most common species was Eurema hecabe. KEY WORDS Lepidoptera! inventory1 tropical rainforesti species diversity1 species richness! insect fauna Introduction The primary lowland forests in the Southeast Asian (SEA) tropics are characterized by the extremely species-rich biodiversity (Whitmore 1998). Arthropod assemblages comprise the main part of the biodiversity in tropical rainforests (Erwin 1982, Wilson 1992). Many inventory studies have been done focusing on various arthropod taxa to reveal the species-richness of arthropod assemblages in SEA tropical rainforests (e.g. Holloway & lntachat 2003). The butterfly is one of the most studied taxonomic groups in arthropods in the SEA region; the accumulated information on the taxonomy and geographic distribution were organized by Tsukada & Nishiyama (1980), Yata & Morishita (1981), Aoki et al.

Webb1* Abstract. Habitat loss and urbanisation in the tropics have been recognised as major drivers of species extinctions. Concurrently, novel habitats such as urban parks have been shown to be important as habitats and stepping stones in urban ecosystems around the world. However, few studies have assessed long-term patterns of species extinctions and discoveries in response to these drivers in the tropics. We know little about long-term persistence and utility of novel habitats in tropical urban ecosystems. In this study, we produced an updated and exhaustive butterfy checklist of species recorded from Singapore till December 2017 to investigate trends in butterfy extirpations (local extinctions), discoveries (new country records) and rediscoveries and how these relate to land use change in 28 years (1990–2017) in Singapore. Up to 144 butterfy species were identifed to be extirpated in Singapore by 1990. From 1990–2017, an additional nine butterfy extirpations have potentially occurred, which suggests a maximum of 153 butterfy extirpations to date. The rate of extirpations between 1990 to 2017 (< 0.33 extirpations per year) was much lower than the rate of extirpations between 1926 to 1989 (> 1.52 extirpations per year). The majority of potentially extirpated butterfies between 1990 to 2017 were species restricted to mature forests.

Thirty-three butterfly species were collected in July 1993 from Sebesi and Sebuku Islands, Indonesia. Most of them were identified at the subspecies level, except several lycaenids. Fourteen species (42.4%) out of the 33 have never been recorded from the Krakataus. This proportion is distinctly higher than 4 to 8 (13.3 to 26.7%) of 30 species recorded from Sebesi in 1989. When these data were taken together, the percentage becomes 32.7 to 40.4% (17 to 21 of 52 species recorded from Sebesi-Sebuku). Comparison between Javanese and Sumatran subspecies in the rate of commonspecies on Sebesi-Sebuku and the Krakataus indicates that the butterfly fauna of the Krakataus have been chiefly derived from Java rather than from Sumatra even though the 2 stepping-stone islands exist between the Krakataus and Sumatra.

D2 1Anna Univerity, Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Chennai-600 025, India 2Molecular Biology Laboratory, Department of Zoology, Calicut University, Kerala-673 635, India Abstract: Lepidoptera is one of the largest orders of insects that include moths and butterflies. Most of the Lepidopterans are morphologically similar, therefore the identification of these insects is tedious using morphotaxonomy and that is detrimental in designing a better strategy to control and conserve them. These are extremely important group of ‘model’ organisms and are used to investigate many areas of biological research, including such diverse fields as navigation, pest control, embryology, mimicry, evolution, genetics, population dynamics and biodiversity conservation. The knowledge of Lepidopteran genomics will create new methods of insect pest management and will contribute to sustainable agriculture, protection of the environment and the maintenance of biodiversity. In this study we amplified cytochrome oxidase I gene of Junonia atlites for species identification and constructed phylogenetic tree for recognizing evolutionary relationship. Keywords: Molecular systematics, Lepidoptera, DNA barcoding, CO I gene sequences, Mitochondrial DNA, Junonia atlites. 1. Introduction and also the effectiveness of DNA barcoding in identification of cryptic species. Identification and conservation of genetic diversity is important for Lepidoptera since it is one of the widespread 2. Materials and Methods and widely recognizable insect orders in the world.
