The Governorate contributes in industrial activity through many Ferro Manganese - Gypsum - Ceramics and Chinese - plastic and paper industries. The number of existing facilities recorded In IDA reached 9 facilities with investment costs about 5.4 billion pounds and employs about 4604 workers with wages of about 99 million pounds divided on all activities, mainly activities of oil, its refined products and natural gas, followed by mining and quarrying, building materials, Chinese porcelain and refractories. -

The mega national projects are considered the locomotive of the sustainable development. In this respect, the New Suez Canal, which was totally setup in one year (August 2015-August 2016), with 100% national finance, had a direct and indirect impact concerning increasing the GDP on the one hand, and activating the movement of trade and aracting foreign investments on the other hand, As regards the national project of developing the Suez Canal Corridor, this project mainly aims at increasing the job opportunities and turning the Suez Canal into a global center for maritime navigation and logistic services, an industrial center and a gate for the trade exchange between the east and the west. -

White Paper: Framing National Health Policy Executive Summary Introduction This White Paper is a “think piece” based on on‐going inclusive consultations and seeking to frame the discussion to support the development of people centered national health policies, strategies and plans. It is not intended to be a draft or a section of any policy, strategy or plan. This White Paper aims at framing the national health policy development by focusing on values/principles, objectives and strategic directions for improving the health of the population and reducing inequalities in health. This paper draws its inspiration and remit from the newly approved Constitution of Egypt. The Constitution explicitly places health high on the national agenda. Article 18 of the Constitution underlines the importance of the right to health and of access to quality health services. It explicitly mandates that government health expenditure be increased to at least 3% of gross domestic product, nearly doubling current health spending. Since the late nineties, Egypt has initiated a comprehensive health sector reform programme that builds on the substantial progress made in previous years. The programme was built to take into account the strengths and weaknesses of the existing health system, as well as, the social, economic, institutional, and political realities facing the country at the time. Since that time, unfortunately most reform initiatives and endeavors have not consistently addressed the same vision, principles or strategies. Although there has been political commitment for reform, this has not been sustainable, nor has it been accompanied by sufficient resources and directives to achieve the intended health sector development. -

In Pharaonic Egypt certain species were sacramented (e.g. the sacred ibis, sacred scarab, etc.) or protected as public property because of their economic importance (e.g. papyrus: material for state monopolized paper industry). In recent history laws protected certain species of animals, but protection of natural habitats with their ecological attributes and assemblages of plants and animals (nature reserves) remained beyond the interest of government. The United Nations, with the assistance of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) published lists of nature reserves worldwide, and Egypt was not mentioned in these lists till the late 1970s. -

The report in its current state cannot be construed as representng a fnal assessment or recommendaton for the establishment of an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system in Egypt but as a basis for discussion and feedback gathering. 1 Extended Producer Responsibility Scheme for Packaging Waste in Egypt Preface The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature and Nuclear Safety (BMU) has commissioned the German agency for internatonal cooperaton Deutsche Gesellschaf für Internatonale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to implement the global project “Support of the Export Initatve for Green Technologies”. It is part of the larger BMU “Export Initatve for Green Technologies”, launched in 2016, to export know-how available in Germany and support sustainable development worldwide. Partner countries are Egypt, Jordan, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Ukraine. Furthermore, there are two global modules supportng the Global Soluton Initatve and Industrial Water Treatment as well as a management unit in Germany. Project measures focus on building up technical and insttutonal know-how as well as laying the groundwork for the introducton and use of environmental and climate protecton technologies “Made in Germany”. -

Maged George Elias 7 Egypt State of Environment Report 8 Egypt State of Environment Report Foreword It gives me great pleasure to foreword State of Environment Report -2008 of the Arab Republic of Egypt, which is issued for the fifth year successively as a significant step of the political environmental commitment of Government of Egypt “GoE”. This comes in the framework of law no.4 /1994 on Environment and its amendment law no.9/2009, which stipulates in its Chapter Two on developing an annual State of Environment Report to be submitted to the president of the Republic and the Cabinet with a copy lodged in the People’s Assembly ; as well as keenness of Egypt’s political leadership to integrate environmental dimension in all fields to achieve sustainable development , which springs from its belief that protecting the environment has become a necessary requirement to protect People’s health and increased production through the optimum utilization of resources .
