QNeST International Itineraries:

Wine and Olive Oil Itinerary

The theme of the Mediterranean Diet, with a particular focus on oil and wine, runs through all the countries of the EUSAIR area. The landscapes, characterised by olive groves and vineyards, bear witness to the common culture of the Euro-Mediterranean area, although each region has its own cultivars and production techniques. Oil and wine have always been used not just in food, but also in the rituals of the various belief systems practised on the shores of the Mediterranean. All the areas involved in the QNeST brand are crossed by routes linked to oil and wine.

In Puglia, the greenways involving olive groves and vineyards are characterised by centuries-old monumental olive trees and olive oil mills, extensive vineyards and wineries. Along these routes in Xanthi, the olive trees stand out in all their majesty, while the wine route bears witness to the region's historic identity. The olive route in Epirus also highlights the bond between the centuries- old olive trees and the region. In the Marche region, the "Emotions without Borders" and "Experience the Region" routes allow you to discover the wealth of local heritage. The "Cycling through the Wineries" route allows you to enjoy the wineries in the Euganean Hills in in combination with the spas in the area. The vineyards and wineries of Montenegro are a constant theme of the "Historic and Natural treasure Route". hosts routes in both Croatia and ;

in the former on the themes of olive oil, wine and ham, a characteristic local product, and in the latter on stone, the coast and olive groves.

Travellers, merchants and pilgrims

The Mediterranean is a sea enclosed by land, since time immemorial connecting the various cultures that have evolved along its shores. Since ancient times, this sea has been crossed by peoples, merchants, pilgrims and travellers of all kinds, carrying with them cultural baggage and experiences that have shaped its regions, traditions, languages and cultures. The QNeST Brand promotes cultural activities via specific itineraries.

The Via Francigena Greenway runs through the Salento peninsula in Puglia, offering "slow tourism" activities that allow the visitor to discover hidden treasures and ancient traditions between Brindisi and Otranto, following the routes of ancient travellers who embarked for the Orient. Closely connected to this theme is "The Way to Jerusalem" in the region of Xanthi, in Greece, while in Epirus, religious heritage routes highlight the Byzantine monasteries. In the Marches, the "Gira- Sole" project promotes cultural activities in the area of Pesaro. In Veneto, the "Literary Park of the Euganean Hills" hosts locations that have inspired poets and writers, while other routes allow the visitor to admire the splendid Venetian villas and castles along the River Brenta. In Montenegro the Virpazar and Skadar Lake National Park route includes landscapes, monuments and flavours around Skadar Lake

Dry Stone

Traditional dry-stone building techniques, recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage, are another shared feature of the regions surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The QNeST Brand promotes routes connected to this important theme: used to build boundary walls, small circular buildings of various kinds, retaining walls for

agricultural terraces and underground places of worship, the stones tell the history of the locations where they are deployed.

The Dry Stones Greenways in Puglia are based on the importance of stone and its use in boundary walls, buildings, underground oil mills, crypts and rock-cut settlements. In the region of Xanthi, "Myths and Culture" is a historical and cultural tourist route linked to the myth of Hercules. In Epirus, the Stone Route runs through the mountain villages of Pindos. In Istria, the Stone Walls route showcases the rural area of Vodnjan, where stone is a key element of the landscape. In Montenegro, the Njegusi village and Lovćen National Park route takes the visitor on a spectacular journey from Kotor, on the coast, to the mountains inland, with an opportunity to enjoy the distinctive flavours of the local food and wine of Njegusi.

Water

Water is something that the countries of the Adriatic-Ionian area all share. In terms of nature, it includes wetlands, springs, rivers and lakes both near the coasts and inland. In terms of human activity, it plays a role in religious rites, gastronomic traditions and even health, as seen in the use of thermal spring waters since ancient times. This is reflected in the proximity of places of worship, cisterns, canals and spas, evidence of the day-to-day link between water and the human population. Then there is the sea, which, in addition to forming a vast ecosystem and a shared asset for the various populations, over time has enabled them to communicate with each other thanks to the art of navigation.

In Puglia there are water-themed greenways in the coastal area from the archaeological park of Egnatia to the Alimini Lakes near Otranto, characterised by a mosaic of wetlands, ancient archaeological sites and spas. In the Veneto region, the Euganean Hills and Spas Area Brand combines thermal spring waters with local food and wine. In the Marche region, a route starts from the coast near Fano, before heading inland along the Furlo Gorge to the "Grotta dei folletti" in Acqualagna. Montenegro proposes a boat trip to discover the natural and cultural heritage of Lake Skadar. Lastly, Epirus proposes the "National Parks of Epirus" network, rich in natural ecosystems and beautiful landscapes.

Sečovlje Salina Nature Park

Activity:

Sečovlje Salina Nature Park covers about 750 ha along the Slovene-Croatian boundary in the extreme south western part of Slovenia, in the southern part of the Community of Piran. Its northern part, where active salt-making is still taking place, is called Lera. From the Park's southern part, called Fontanigge, it is separated by the bed of the Drnica stream. The Fontanigge is full of large basins which, however, are being gradually overgrown by the characteristic salt- loving vegetation –halophytes. The basins are crisscrossed by the system of ancient levees, amongst which mostly the larger ones have been preserved. Along the wide channels, the former salt-pan houses are scattered, which with their characteristic appearance co-create the truly unique image of the salina landscape. The main freshwater vein is the Dragonja river, which after few tens of kilometres of its course joins the sea at the Sečovlje salt-pans.

Velika raznolikost naravnih virov, ugodno morsko (sredozemsko) podnebje in lega Strunjanskega polotoka v zavetju pred severovzhodnim vetrom je omogočila nastanek solin.

The great diversity of natural resources in this part of Slovenia has been enabled by the favourable maritime climate and position of the Strunjan Peninsula in the shelter from north-easterly wind. Man exploited them in order to survive in this environment and shaped, in harmony with nature, the characteristic landscape. This diversity of life has been preserved thanks to the dispersed settling pattern in the area, farming on the terraces, coastal fishing and traditional manual salt-making.

Activity: Accommodation services

Že takrat so hišo sestavljali vaška pivnica, trgovina z živili in pošta.

In rural areas of Slovenian Istria, ten minutes from the Centre of Koper, on the very edge of the Karst, an interesting village of Črni Kal is situated, with world-renowned climbing areas. Just a step out of the hustle and bustle of the city, with the most beautiful vantage points of the Slovene Istria and the Gulf of Trieste. Way back in 1895 the HIŠA ROBIDA was the largest facility on the Ćetnar (Katinara), as we locals call it – the bottom of Črni Kal. It was an important point on the way from the coast to the country’s inland. Even then, the house consisted of the village pub, the grocery store, and a post office. After the war the restaurant was best known for its excellent sausages, prosciutto and delicious homemade cuisine, led by our grandparents Olga and Slavko Žerjul. For many years a major part of the house was empty and deserted until there were some suggestions from Slavko’s grandson Žiga. After that, Slavko’s graddaughter Tina transferred some ideas to paper. Shortly afterwards the efforts were fruitful because of the harmony of the family Vatovec and grandma Olga. The Istrian stone house was completely renovated in July 2018 into a hostel or GUEST HOUSE HIŠA ROBIDA where they want to offer their guests a higher level of quality of service.

QNeST Points of Interest: ______

Cerkev Sv. Trojice - Hrastovlje

Church Sv. Trojica - Hrastovlje

Cerkev Sv.

A disoriented Roman three aisle, barrel vaulted church of the holy Trinity with a high bell tower is a unique example of religious architectural heritage that was declared a monument of local

importance in 1993. It stands on the upper part of the Rižana valley on a rocky hill above the village Hrastovlje. The interior is painted with Gothic fresco by Johannes de Castua, whose work was finished in 1490.It is one the most prestigious yet still preserved medieval piece of art in Slovenia with scenes from The Old Testament: Genesis, twelve months and the famous Dance of Death. According to one theory the church is supposed to have been built in the Romanesque period, according to another in the 15th century (rustic example of Early Venetian Reneissance architecture). It is surrounded by a powerful outer wall with two round defence towers from the 16th century used to fortify Karst villages in the fights against the Turks and Uskoks. There is a carved inscription above the main entrance. The church has an interior that is entirely painted. The main author of the paintings is revealed in the inscriptions in Glagolitic and Latin alphabets. According to their style the paintings are classified as Istrian local of the second half the 15th century. Beside the mentioned motifs with mostly religious contents also the work of farmers in different seasons is shown. They were discovered by a local painter, Jože Pohlen, in 1951.

Church of the Assumption - Koper

The church of the Assumption, also a cathedral and a parish church in Koper was declared a monument of local importance in 1993. It is a richly furnished three-aisle Baroque church with apse on the basis of a Roman basilica. The main front is built in the Gothic style at the bottom and Reneisance style at the top. The city tower originates from the 12th century; its purpose was changed in 1418-80 as it was firstly used as a defence tower. It is now a bell tower of the Aquileia type and it hence offers a magnificent view. The church stands on the eastern part of the main town square (Tito square) with the southern part and the apse oriented to the Brolo square and its main front turned to the Tito square. From the original, Roman church, which was renovated in the Gothic and Reneisance periods, only the southern wall, the bell tower and the front are preserved. The front is made of two parts. In the interior we can find a combination of an almost classicistic design of architectural elements and a Barouque rhythm of the arcades. The church also houses the sarcophagus of St. Nazarius, Koper's bishop and the protector of the city from the 6th century. It was donated by the Venetian republic in 1350 and it represents a typical sculptural work of arts from that times. It is hence considered exceptional in Slovenia. The sarcophagus holds figurines of the pope Alexander, St. Nazarius and the deacon Elijah surrounded by cripples that are turning to the saint in hope of a miraculous healing.

Piran je čudovito staro pristaniško mesto v slovenski Istri. Mesto je ohranilo srednjeveški načrt z ozkimi ulicami in stisnjenimi hišami, kar mu daje poseben čar. Jurija, sodniška palača, mestna hiša, Tartinijev spomenik, loža, gotska hiša, imenovana Benečanka in druge.

The Praetorian Palace in Koper

Pretorska palača z zunanjim stopniščem, dvema stolpoma, nazobčanim zaključkom in grbi na fasadi predstavlja najpomembnejšo posvetno stavbo v Kopru. Prevladujoča poznogotsko-renesančna in beneško-gotska sloga uvrščata palačo v vrh slovenske profane arhitekture. Njeno obsežno pročelje krasijo vrste dvo-, tro- in štirilancetnih oken, že omenjene stopnice in balkon nad polkrožnim dvostebrnim portalom. Uporabljali so ga za anonimna sporočila koprskim upravnikom.

The Praetorian Palace with its external staircase, two towers, a serrated finish and crests on the facade represents the most important profane structure in Koper. The central town square, once the Platea comunis, then the Cathedral, and today Tito Square, is surrounded by the most significant town structures with rich history. Opposite the town loggia, on the southern part of the square, is the magnificent Praetorian Palace, the most important profane architectural structure in town with exceptional building history from the 13th until the 17th century. It was erected between two older mid 13th century houses, which first used to be connected by the loggia. During the second half of the century, the palace was renovated several times, primarily because it was destroyed by the Genoese attack. Finally, its present, two-storey appearance with external stars and two towers, one on the east and the other on the west wing, was completed in the second half of the 15th century. The dominating Late Gothic-Renaissance and the Venetian Gothic styles rank the palace among the top of the Slovenian profane architecture. Its spacious facade is intertwined by a row of double-, triple-, and quadruple lancet windows, the already mentioned stairs and the balcony above the semi-circular two pillar portal. The Renaissance portal, known as del Corte dates back to 1505. It was given its final appearance during the Baroque, when an impressive serrated finish was added in 1664 and the decorative coats of arms re-positioned on the facade. The lion shaped relief with an opening i.e. Bocca del Leone, was put on the facade corner. It was used for anonymous messages to Koper administrators. Following the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797, the Praetorian Palace lost its significance. During the Austrian rule, all the functions were moved to the Armeria (arms storage). The structure was neglected until 2001, when it was renovated, and the town hall restored within its walls.

**************************************************************************************************************** Carpacciev trg in hiša - Koper

The Carpaccio House and the Square in Koper

Carpaccio square in Koper is decorated by the Column of St. Justine and the capital shaped well. There is also the namesake house. It is said to be the birthplace of painter Vittore Carpaccio. Located behind the St. Mark's storehouse is Carpaccio square with the Column of St. Justine from 1572 and the Koper coat of arms marking the victory over Venice in the Battle of Lepanto in which a Koper took part as well. Along the same axis as the Column of Justine is the mid 15th century well shaped as a capital. The well was transported from Venice, and placed on the Capraccio square as late as 1935. The 14th century Venetian-Gothic residential two-storey building known as the Capraccio House is located on the square at number 6. Although it was said to be a birthplace of Venetian painter Vittore Carpaccio, it is more probable that Vittore's son Benedetto Carpaccio lived there until the mid 16th century. This beautiful example of the Gothic architecture with Gothic windows on its second floor owes its present look to comprehensive restorations in 1935 and 1955.

**************************************************************************************************************** Grad v Podpeči The Podpeč Castle

The Podpeč Castle is the most recognizable for its round tower with Renaissance architectural elements such as the wreath or gun holes. The House of Prkič is the most famous. The village was developed in Koper's hinterland, above the valley of the Rižana. The oldest recognizable structure is the 11th century round tower. Although at first it seems small and insufficiently defensive, its cliff position is excellent, which allowed it the control of the valley all the way to Trieste. Podpeč is somewhat special as it connects the tower-shelter and the pit camp with drinking water. Its defence was organized along two floors. As all camps in Istria, this pit was also built in stone. The tower in Podpeč is the work of a trained stonemason. The cantilever Renaissance wreath, special firing holes and other architectural elements prove the mastership and the experience of the builder. The entrance into the tower was elevated and more difficult to reach by conquerors. The village was more significantly renovated and expanded in the 15 c., when the House of Prkič was built. This is the most famous house constructed for local clergy by masters Andrew and Benko from Sočerga. This is the time when a small square with a drinking water source was erected as well as one- and two-storey houses along the main street. Next to the Church of St. Helen is the local cemetery. The large Gothic edifice with a deep sanctuary was painted in 1489 by the famous workshop of John from Kastav, of which there was the inscription on the bordure between the scenes of Christ's Crucifixion and the Adoration of the Magi. Unfortunately, it has faded. Although it fell under the Venetian rule in 1535, the tower became the part of a number of fortresses which task was to protect the Venetian Istria only some 20 years later. It was attacked and burned in 1615, when all the survivors fled. Despite grave circumstances, the proveditor ordered the refugees to return and renovate their homes. Nevertheless, Podpeč is today mainly deserted.

**************************************************************************************************************** Grad The Socerb Castle

Temu so sledili požari, devastacije, preprodaje, zamenjave lastnikov in končno nova obnova leta 1925.

Socerb was founded on the ruins of an Illyrian hill-fort. The fortress expanded during the Middle Ages. Due to its excellent geographic position, it used to be a constant target in the wars between the Venice and the people of Trieste. Overlooking the Gulf of Trieste, Socerb Castle, built on the ruins of an Illyrian hill-fort, has for centuries withstood the northern wind bora and ravages of time. First mentioned in 1040, it was named after the patron saint of Trieste and martyr, St. Servul (St. Socerb, San Servolo). According to legend, after having converted to Christianity, Servul hid in the nearby cave (283 or 284) before the governor of Trieste had him executed. In the past, the castle had a significant strategic position, controlling the political border and important routes, so it was the reason for battles between the Venetians and people of Trieste. In the early medieval period residential areas were added, so it grew into a fortification with permanently resident troops. However, in the second half of the 14th c., the town nobles withdrew from their knightly life and turned to more profitable sources of income. After the peace agreement, the fortification was transformed into agricultural land. Territories of the ancient ager of Trieste and villages that had been taken away long before, were joined to it. In spite of the renowned wine from the surrounding vineyards, the owners fell into debts and were forced to sell the property. This was followed by fires, devastation, selling and change of owners and finally in 1925, reconstruction. The present appearance of the castle differs greatly from the description of the historian and travel writer Valvasor in The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola (Slavi vojvodine Kranjske). He also gives a detailed account of the Holy Cave, the only subterranean church in the world, where a mass in honour of St. Servul is held every May.

Grad v Kubedu The Castle

Kubed was important for military reasons. Having lost its primary military function, it was not abandoned. Houses and the church were built inside its walls, which preserved them until the 18th c. King Henry IV mentioned Kubed in the letter to the Bishop of Freising in 1067. Unlike other fort- castles, its walls protected the houses as late as the end of the 18th century. The Kubed castle was an important strategic point because it served as backing for the fortresses situated near the border, so military troops were stationed there until the end of the Uskok War. First data on the castle date back to the first Austro-Venetian war, when it was used as residence by Commander Civrano and his mercenaries. During the Austrian-Venetian war the castle was heavily damaged, but it was reconstructed in the second half of the 15th century with a special contribution by Anton Serena. From then on the castle was continuously being reconstructed because of its strategic importance. Walls were very well preserved long after the end of the Uskok War. A greater part of the walls and its defensive tower that was turned into a belfry have been preserved to the present day. In the 17th c., after the army had withdrawn and the castle started to lose its military function, the church, as well as the houses were built within the walls by leaning against the existing bulwarks. In such a way the castle was preserved unlike many others.

**************************************************************************************************************** Vodnjak Da Ponte The Da Ponte Fountain

The Da Ponte fountain is the last station of the aqueduct, which supplied Koper with water. Its present day Baroque appearance stems from the mid 17th century. On the northern part of the Prešern Square is a beautiful Da Ponte fountain, mentioned as early as 1423. The square served as the main connection between Koper and its hinterland, as well as the last point of the aqueduct by which the water was transported from the neighbouring hills. The Da Ponte fountain was its final station. Its current Baroque appearance stems from 1666, when podestá Lorenzo Da Ponte, after whom it was named, had it re-built. The arch with the balustrade symbolizing the bridge is placed above the octagonal fountain pool, which was additionally decorated by four pyramids, each with a sphere on its top. Among three crests on the fountain, the Da Ponte family one has a bridge (ponte) as a family symbol. Some experts believe that the very appearance of the Da Ponte family is reminiscent of Ponte delle Guglie, a bridge in Venice. In the foot of the arch four masquerons were carved representing amphibian deities and eastern figures. Metal pipes stick from their mouths, pouring water into the fountain. To prevent the cattle access, the fence was built around the fountain consisting of 15 columns decorated by crests of the families who had contributed to the construction of the fountain. Apart from the crests, columns were also decorated by spheres, fruit baskets and pine trees, set at their peaks. The fountain was used until 1898. During its renovation in 1990, earlier water supply pipes which supplied the fountain with water were found.

The Veneziana House is the best example of the Venetian-Gothic architecture in Piran. Its red facade is richly decorated by typically Gothic archaeological elements. At the corner of IX Corpo Street and Tartini Square is the Veneziana House, a magnificent structure decorated in Venetian red and the best example of the preserved Venetian Gothic architecture in Piran. Erected in the mid 15th century by one of the most powerful families in Piran, the Del Bellos, it is considered the oldest structure on the square. Its facade is richly decorated by architectural elements and decorations or reliefs made in stone, typical for Venetian Gothic. The first floor of the main facade, the one facing Tartini Square, is adorned by the Gothic triple-lancet window with pointy window finishes, between which relief stone rosettas are places, and serrated decoration characteristic for the building method of the period. Apart from the triple-lancet window, the floor also has a magnificent corner balcony, with a stone balustrade. The balustrade was made of thin columns ending in basket shaped capitals, while the plate above it, in the corners and in the centre, is decorated by plastic made human heads. Another human head was placed at the corner of the building as a stone relief. The second floor of the Veneziana House faces the square with its two single-lancet windows, also richly decorated. Both have a ledge with the carved lion head supporting elements. The stone plate with a carved lion is placed between the single-lancet windows. The lion holds the inscription Lasa pur dir between its paws. The meaning of the inscription has been heavily debated. The legend speaks of the love between a young girl from Piran and a rich merchant from Venice. Evil tongues of Piran made the girl's life difficult while her beloved one was away on a far journey. Because of her constant complaints, the light-hearted merchant had the inscription made: Lasa pur dir – Let them speak.

Teater Giuseppe Tartini so oprli marca 1910.

The Giuseppe Tartini Theatre was opened in March 1910. Its simple exterior opposes the richly decorated and fresco painted interior. The Giuseppe Tartini Theatre in Piran was opened in March 1910 as a municipal theatre. Although its original construction site was planned next to the Communal Palace, i.e. behind it, there was a change in the course of project implementation. The site which was supposed to be turned into a theatre was left unbuilt and became a square. The Giuseppe Tartini Theatre was designed by Gioachini Grassi and Giacomo Zamatti. Its interior is lavishly decorated and painted by frescoes depicting Greek muses and floral motifs.

Hotel Palace with a park - Portorož

Hotel Palace je danes luksuzni hotel Kempinski Palace s 5 zvezicami. Zgrajen je bil v času Avstroogrske monarhije, odprli so ga leta 1910. Že takrat so ga ocenili za zelo kakovosten hotel. Portorož je z Opatijo, Gradežem and Lidom predstavljal najpomembnejše toplice in morsko letovišče. Stari hotel Palace (in njegov luksuzni naslednik) s parkom predstavlja edinstveno kulturno, arhitekturno in turistično privlačnost.

HotelPalace, today a luxury Kempinski Palace Hotel with five stars was built and opened in 1910 in the times of the Austro Hungarian monarchy. It was ranked as a top quality hotel already in those times. Portorož together with Opatija, Grado and Lido were then the most important spa and sea resorts. In 1983 the hotel was declared a cultural monument when it still showed a relatively well preserved interior and rich decorated exterior –the influence of Vienna Secession and Italian architecture during the transition from the 19th to 20th century. In 1990 it had to be shut down and the hotel started to decay slowly until its renovation (2006-2008). Only the front of the hotel was kept, everything else was demolished and rebuilt. The central area is still the Crystal hall with its 305 square metres. In the axis of the hotel there is a geometrical park declared as a monument of design. It continues towards the west into organic routed paths, towards the east into geometrically designed sections. The old hotel Palace (and its luxurious successor) with the park are a superior cultural, architectural and tourism attraction.

**************************************************************************************************************** Hotel Adria Convent – Ankaran

Vsak del predstavlja ločeno enoto, urejeno s sredozemskim, submediteranskim in eksotičnim rastlinjem. Kompleks je projektiral in uredil znan slovenski arhitekt Edo Mihevc v 60-ih letih 20. stoletja. Omembe vreden spomenik lokalnega pomena je zagotovo samostan Sv. Nikolaja (sakralna posvetna arhitekturna dediščina) z ohranjenimi krili srednjeveškega benedektinskega samostana, središčnim renesančnim hodnikom in zunanjimi zidovi cerkve z zvonikom iz 1572.

Hotel Adria Convent in Ankaran is a great case of integral heritage that consists of profane architectural heritage, a park, a campsite, a settlement and a bathing area. It is a relatively large estate of public park area that includes also a hotel with bungalows, campsite, playgrounds and beaches. Every part is its own design unit using Mediterranean, Submediterranean or exotic vegetation. The complex was designed and decorated by an established Slovene architect Edo Mihevc in the 1960s. As a monument of local importance it is worth mentioning the St. Nicholas monastery (sacral profane architectural heritage) with preserved wings of a medieval Benedictine monastery, intersection Renaissance hall and an outer shell of a church with a bell tower (from 1572). In 1960 the monastery was partly made into a hotel, in 2011 it was completely renovated and is now offering the luxury of a 4star hotel with 23 rooms and a luxury suite. Formal Benedictine monastery, en exceptional cultural monument with rich history is now a hotel facility in a picturesque and always green area.
