Wyant Thesis committee: Thesis Adviser Date ABSTRACT Liberating the Imago Dei: An Examination of Jewish and Christian Feminist Biblical Anthropology by Carissa S. Wyant “I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.” -Audre Lorde This study provides a comparative analysis of the work of Roman Catholic feminist theologian Elizabeth Johnson and that of Jewish feminist theologian Judith Plaskow, who have both sought to reconstruct the Imago Dei (“image of God”) within their respective traditions. By way of this analysis, it makes a methodological and a substantive contribution. Methodologically, it expands on Elizabeth Schüssler-Fiorenza’s feminist critical approach to reading Scripture by relating it to Francis Clooney’s comparative theological approach to reading texts in religious traditions other than one’s own. Although there have been attempts at comparisons of various religious traditions from a feminist perspective, this study seeks explicitly to attend to a feminist reading of biblical texts in a fashion—following Clooney—that makes the very enactment of a comparative reading of two traditions the mode for attending to the disclosure of truth. Substantively, it expands our understanding of the Imago Dei by setting in constructive dialogue Johnson’s practices for understanding God’s incomprehensibility in her rethinking of God as Sophia (as a corrective to a tradition that emphasizes male-oriented ‘doctrines’) and Plaskow’s practices for understanding God’s immanence in her rethinking of God within the context of relationships (as a corrective to a tradition that emphasizes the interpretation of the ‘law’).” Throughout, the dissertation argues that such ii a feminist and comparative approach contributes to a richer and more robust understanding of the biblical theme of the Imago Dei, one that not only expands our understanding of God but also contributes to a more just and humane vision of humanity. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am deeply appreciative of the support of faculty and students throughout my academic career at Wellesley College, Yale Divinity School and Luther Seminary. Ensor SAC Department Eastern Michigan University Ypsilanti, MI 48197 USA Email: [email protected] Abstract: Kin terminology research—as reflected in Crow-Omaha and Dziebel (2021)—has long been interested in “deep time” evolution. In this commentary, I point out serious issues in neoev- olutionist models and phylogenetic models assumed in Crow-Omaha and Dziebel’s arguments. I summarize the widely-shared objections (in case Kin term scholars have not previously paid atten- tion) and how those apply to Kin terminology. Trautmann (2012:48) expresses a hope that Kinship analysis will Join with archaeology (and primatology). Dziebel misinterprets archaeology as lin- guistics and population genetics. Although neither Crow-Omaha nor Dziebel (2021) make use of archaeology, biological anthropology, or paleogenetics, I include a brief overview of recent ap- proaches to prehistoric Kinship in those fields—some of which consider Crow-Omaha—to point out how these fields’ interpretations are independent of ethnological evolutionary models, how their data should not be used, and what those areas do need from experts on kinship. The term has been heatedly debated and both feminists and Muslims have rejected it as two fundamentally incompatible ideas. Secular feminists reject it because they argue religion generally and Islam in particular is oppressive to women2 and many Muslim women reject it because they feel ‘feminism’ is a secular invention imposed on them from outside, from the West. Islamic feminism is indeed highly contested, but it has also been widely embraced by both activists and scholars. As Margot Badran’s article from 2002 asks, What's in a name? What's behind a name? What is Islamic feminism?3 I will in a humble way attempt to address these questions in this talk. Let me first start by saying that this is a research paper on Islamic feminism. I am not a Muslim, but I find myself fascinated and genuinely interested in the question of women and Islam. I do not under any circumstances start my engagement with the topic from a position which neither reduces Islam to be monolithic and anti-women nor a position which states that secularism is the only route to women’s empowerment.

    Islamic Feminism Revisited Haideh Moghissi ver a year has passed since millions of Iranian people poured into the streets pro- testing the rigged presidential elections that reinstated Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in office for a second term. The powerful yet remarkably nonviolent protest movement, in particular the images of beautiful young women at the front rows of street demonstrations, their clearly secular appearances, their courageous encounters with police and plain- clothed thugs, and the killing of a young woman, Neda Agha- Soltan, whose murder was captured on camera, mesmerized the world. These images helped challenge the long- held perceptions about religion- steeped “Muslim” women and the political and emotional attachment of people to the Islamic state and its values and practices. The protests also helped silence, temporarily at least, the cultural relativist academics and commentators who since the mid- 1990s had been beating the drums of secularism’s end in Iran and had tried to push Islamic feminism as the only homegrown, locally produced, and hence culturally suitable project for changing the lot of women in Iran and indeed in Muslim- majority countries. The ebbing of the street protests under the brutal pressure of security forces and the pushing underground of all forms of opposition, however, seem to have resuscitated those who support Islam as the Middle Eastern version of liberation theology. For more than a decade the proponents of the idea, through their “field research,” documentaries, and reports and in total disregard for the loud voices of the overwhelming majority of urban women (and men) with or without faith inside Iran, wittingly or unwittingly lobbied on behalf of Islamists’ proj- of ects.

    Is Judaism ‘Sex Positive?’ Understanding Trends in Recent Jewish Sexual Ethics Rebecca Epstein-Levi Introduction hen I tell people that I am a scholar of Jewish sexual eth- Wics, I am sometimes asked just what Judaism has to say about the matter. I usually give the unhelpful academic refrain of “well, it’s complicated…” or I tell the well-worn joke about “two Jews, three opinions.” The fact of the matter is that Jewish thinking on sexual ethics, as with most other things, is conten- tious, multivocal, and often contradictory. However, there are actually two levels on which this question operates. The first level is what the multiplicity of classical Jewish traditions have offered directly on matters of sexual conduct—what “Judaism says about sex.” The second level is the way modern and con- temporary thinkers have presented classical sources on sex and sexuality—what “Jewish thinkers say Judaism says about sex.” In the past seventy years or so, as the academic study of Jewish ethics has gained an institutional foothold and as rab- bis and Jewish public intellectuals have had to grapple with changes in public sexual mores and with the increasing reach of popular media, both of these levels of the question have, at least in Jewish thought in the U.S. and Canada, exhibited some clear trends. Here, I offer an analysis and a critique of these trends, especially in academic Jewish sexual ethics as it cur- rently stands, and suggest some directions for its future growth.
