2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT LEADERSHIP MONTANA A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD MIKE O’NEILL It is my distinct honor to serve as the current Chair of the Board of Governors of Leadership Montana. I, along with my fellow board members, remain committed to making Leadership Montana the premier leadership development organization within Montana. I am pleased to be able to report the following to our alumni, supporters and friends: • The current Board is made up extraordinarily talented individuals who have incredible skills, which they share willingly with all of us. • The hiring of Chantel McCormick Schieffer (2010) as our Executive Director will provide the program some much needed stability. Since hired to this position in June, Chantel has exceeded our expectations and we are looking forward to a long term relationship that will continue to grow stronger over time. Chantel and Karyn Ottolino (2010) make a great team and their skills very much complement one another. • Fund raising, while often challenging, has stabilized and I’m pleased to be able to report Leadership Montana is on solid financial footing. Much of this credit goes to the leadership of Tom Scott and Ron Sexton, who found ways to keep the organization viable in some very lean years. The current Development Committee, under the leadership of Brenda Peterson (2008), has been able to set and achieve realistic fund raising goals and build a small reserve account to get us by in those “rainy day” situations. While we have room for growth in this area, the Committee, Board and staff are focused on this work and are making great progress. • The Training Committee, under the leadership of Jean Branscum (2005), is fine tuning the delivery of our leadership package. We have two partners – a team led by Dr. Jerry Evans, a charter Board member of Leadership Montana, and Carmen McSpadden (2006) – who are working together to deliver a seamless learning experience that is second to none. We are excited about this year’s class work and believe it may be the best year ever for the learning experience. • The Finance Committee, led by Chad Lippert (2009), has been dedicated to fine tuning our financial processes and procedures to help us accurately review our financial position. This group has taken the lead in establishing realistic goals and they take their fiduciary duties very seriously. I, for one, sleep much better at night knowing this group is so dedicated to this effort. • The Alumni Committee, led by Amy Kellogg (aka K-Love, 2013) continues to amaze me by their outstanding efforts to engage and re-engage alumni. Representatives from all 10 classes serve on this committee and are providing direct and respectful observations as to how to best serve the needs of Alumni going forward. This is one of our most active Committees, and their dedication is greatly appreciated by the Board. • The Board has adopted internal administrative rules to insure the Board has well defined management succession, in order to guarantee continuity of leadership. To that end, Jean Branscum will be the next Chair of the Board starting at the beginning of our next fiscal year (July 2015). Jean is an extraordinary leader and I’m confident our program will flourish under her leadership. I’m extremely excited about the momentum within the Leadership Montana organization. I believe we are perfectly positioned to grow and become Montana’s premier leadership development organization. Building on our core value of civil discourse, we will make significant contributions all throughout Montana. A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “It’s an exciting time to be a part of Leadership Montana.” As I’ve met with alumni and supporters across our great state, I’ve said these words countless times with sincere excitement about the future of this powerful organization. I am truly humbled and honored to be a part of the team. When listening to alumni, I learn firsthand how this organization has deeply affected your lives in meaningful ways. It’s made you better leaders in your businesses and communities, encouraged you to run for office or join nonprofit boards, and has made your conversations more gracious in many ways. Leadership Montana has made all of us better citizens who are truly making a difference in this place we all call home. From City Hall to the halls of the Capitol - and in boardrooms and classrooms across the state - our alumni are making communities better by using the skills we’ve learned through Leadership Montana. Even after ten successful years of this impactful program, in many ways, our work is just beginning. There is much more for us to do - together. You’ll quickly find over the next several months that the Board and I have a vision for the future of Leadership Montana that includes many exciting opportunities for you to become involved, to sharpen your leadership skills, and to help us propel this organization into the next decade. It is an exciting time to be a part of Leadership Montana and we hope you will consider showing your support of our work with a charitable donation during our very first annual fundraising campaign. While we have survived with the generous support of many Montana businesses, now is the time for us to thrive with support from our alumni and friends. So if you have felt that Leadership Montana magic in your own life - and let’s face it, who among us hasn’t - we humbly ask you to consider a donation in any amount to help us build a strong foundation of financial support. Your investment in Leadership Montana truly is an investment in maintaining ours as the Last Best Place. Thank you for all that you do each and every day to lead Montana.
