His music continues to be played and studied throughout the world. Messiaen also distinguished himself as a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire from 1941 to 1978, with William Albright, Jean Barraque´, George Benjamin, Pierre Boulez, Alexander Goehr, Karel Goeyvaerts, Tristan Murail, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Iannis Xenakis numbering among his pupils. At l’E´ glise de la Sainte-Trinite´ in Paris, one of the city’s more prominent churches, Messiaen served as titular orga- nist from 1931 to 1991. He was an avid collector of birdsongs throughout his life and incorporated them into his music. Indeed, Messiaen’s knowledge of birdcalls was substantial, approaching that of professional ornithologists. Interest in Messiaen and his music has been growing for several decades. Numerous primary sources are available, such as interviews and lectures, didactic treatises, commentaries on his works, articles and reviews for journals and essay collections, and prefaces to the books and music of others. Likewise, numerous musicological studies dealing with Messiaen’s life and work have been published in several different languages. Many conferences, festivals, and concerts devoted solely to his music have taken place, and recordings of his works are numerous, all reflecting his interna- tional stature as a composer. In this technological age, information on Messiaen can be found on the Internet. Interestingly, no extensive anno- tated bibliography has ever been published that organizes this massive amount of data. The present volume, Olivier Messiaen: A Research and Information Guide, is intended to fill this important need. In a word, Olivier Messiaen: A Research and Information Guide presents the reader with the most significant and helpful resources on Messiaen published between 1930 and 2007. Most of the entries are in English, French, and German, reflecting the significance of Messiaen scholarship in the United Kingdom, United States, France, Austria, and Germany. With regard to primary sources, the book attempts to be as comprehensive as possible, listing most of Messiaen’s interviews and writings with an eye to offering a ‘‘biography in documents.’’ The book, out of necessity, includes only those secondary resources that are considered to be the more con- sequential examples of Messiaen scholarship. An introductory chapter offers a short biography of Messiaen, a consideration of his musical style and xiii xiv Preface works, and a discussion of Messiaen studies. Chapters 2 and 3 concentrate on the primary literature organized around the following categories: (1) manu- script collections; (2) articles and reviews; (3) pedagogical works; (4) lectures and librettos; (5) prefaces; (6) interviews; (7) correspondence; and (8) documentaries and filmed performances.
