His music continues to be played and studied throughout the world. Messiaen also distinguished himself as a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire from 1941 to 1978, with William Albright, Jean Barraque´, George Benjamin, Pierre Boulez, Alexander Goehr, Karel Goeyvaerts, Tristan Murail, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Iannis Xenakis numbering among his pupils. At l’E´ glise de la Sainte-Trinite´ in Paris, one of the city’s more prominent churches, Messiaen served as titular orga- nist from 1931 to 1991. He was an avid collector of birdsongs throughout his life and incorporated them into his music. Indeed, Messiaen’s knowledge of birdcalls was substantial, approaching that of professional ornithologists. Interest in Messiaen and his music has been growing for several decades. Numerous primary sources are available, such as interviews and lectures, didactic treatises, commentaries on his works, articles and reviews for journals and essay collections, and prefaces to the books and music of others. Likewise, numerous musicological studies dealing with Messiaen’s life and work have been published in several different languages. Many conferences, festivals, and concerts devoted solely to his music have taken place, and recordings of his works are numerous, all reflecting his interna- tional stature as a composer. In this technological age, information on Messiaen can be found on the Internet. Interestingly, no extensive anno- tated bibliography has ever been published that organizes this massive amount of data. The present volume, Olivier Messiaen: A Research and Information Guide, is intended to fill this important need. In a word, Olivier Messiaen: A Research and Information Guide presents the reader with the most significant and helpful resources on Messiaen published between 1930 and 2007. Most of the entries are in English, French, and German, reflecting the significance of Messiaen scholarship in the United Kingdom, United States, France, Austria, and Germany. With regard to primary sources, the book attempts to be as comprehensive as possible, listing most of Messiaen’s interviews and writings with an eye to offering a ‘‘biography in documents.’’ The book, out of necessity, includes only those secondary resources that are considered to be the more con- sequential examples of Messiaen scholarship. An introductory chapter offers a short biography of Messiaen, a consideration of his musical style and xiii xiv Preface works, and a discussion of Messiaen studies. Chapters 2 and 3 concentrate on the primary literature organized around the following categories: (1) manu- script collections; (2) articles and reviews; (3) pedagogical works; (4) lectures and librettos; (5) prefaces; (6) interviews; (7) correspondence; and (8) documentaries and filmed performances. • Cohesion of Composer and Singer: the Female Singers of Poulenc
COHESION OF COMPOSER AND SINGER: THE FEMALE SINGERS OF POULENC DOCUMENT Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan Joanne Musselman, B.M., M.M. ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Document Committee: J. Robin Rice, Adviser Approved by: Hilary Apfelstadt Wayne Redenbarger ________________________ Adviser Graduate Program in Music Copyright by Susan Joanne Musselman 2007 ABSTRACT Every artist’s works spring from an aspiring catalyst. One’s muses can range from a beloved city to a spectacular piece of music, or even a favorite time of year. Francis Poulenc’s inspiration for song-writing came from the high level of intimacy he had with his close friends. They provided the stimulation and encouragement needed for a lifetime of composition. There is a substantial amount of information about Francis Poulenc’s life and works available. We are fortunate to have access to his own writings, including a diary of his songs, an in-depth interview with a close friend, and a large collection of his correspondence with friends, fellow composers, and his singers. It is through these documents that we not only glean knowledge of this great composer, but also catch a glimpse of the musical accuracy Poulenc so desired in the performance of his songs. A certain amount of scandal surrounded Poulenc during his lifetime and even well after his passing. Many rumors existed involving his homosexuality and his relationships with other male musicians, as well as the possible fathering of a daughter. The primary goal of this document is not to unearth any hidden innuendos regarding his personal life, however, but to humanize the relationships that Poulenc had with so many of his singers.

VOCAL 78 rpm Discs Minimum bid as indicated per item. Listings “Just about 1-2” should be considered as mint and “Cons. 2” with just slight marks. For collectors searching top copies, you’ve come to the right place! The further we get from the era of production (in many cases now 100 years or more), the more difficult it is to find such excellent extant pressings. Some are actually from mint dealer stocks and others the result of having improved copies via dozens of collections purchased over the past fifty years. * * * For those looking for the best sound via modern reproduction, those items marked “late” are usually of high quality shellac, pressed in the 1950-55 period. A number of items in this particular catalogue are excellent pressings from that era. Also featured are many “Z” shellac Victors, their best quality surface material (later 1930s) and PW (Pre-War) Victor, almost as good surface material as “Z”. Likewise laminated Columbia pressings (1923- 1940) offer particularly fine sound. * * * Please keep in mind that the minimum bids are in U.S. Dollars, a benefit to most collectors. * * * “Text label on verso.” For a brief period (1912-‘14), Victor pressed silver-on-black labels on the reverse sides of some of their single-faced recordings, usually featuring translations of the text or similarly related comments. VERTICALLY CUT RECORDS. There were basically two systems, the “needle-cut” method employed by Edison, which was also used by Aeolian-Vocalion and Lyric and the “sapphire ball” system of Pathé, also used by Rex. and vertical Okeh.

© Copyrighted Material Chapter 2 Messiaen as Pianist: A Romantic in a Modernist World Christopher Dingle Scholars or performers might view the study of musical performance, whether live or recorded, as the exploration of creative confusion. Such an investigation feeds off the gap between the information provided by the composer (principally, though not exclusively, through the score) and the performer’s understanding of what is and is not conveyed explicitly and implicitly by that information. We might rationally think that such a gap would not exist when the composer and the performer are the same individual. Still, while every case differs, the gap can often appear to become a yawning chasm for composer-performers. This chapter explores the particular creative confusion that arises between the composer Olivier Messiaen and the performer Olivier Messiaen. Pierre Boulez, admittedly talking about Messiaen’s position in general, neatly encapsulated the conundrum in words readily applicable to Messiaen the performer. He described Messiaen as: a man who is preoccupied strongly with techniques, but who puts forward, in the first place, expression … . He has a kind of revolutionary ideal and at the same time a very conservative taste for what the essence of music is … . [T]hat’s a man who is exactly in the centre of some very important contradictions of this century.1 These contradictions become especially acute in considering Messiaen as composer-performer. Messiaen the composer was a man of many words, always happy to talk about his music. Despite the widespread availability of certain recordings, Messiaen the performer is rather less well known.
