Late on a 1975 night in Landers’ Chicago apartment, an ironic twist of events confronts her with a looming deadline for a column dealing with a new kind of heartbreak — her own. 2 Mark Russell: The Laughter of Politics Long before Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert, there was Mark Russell, daring to joke and sing of the often absurd political process. He started in a little piano bar on Capitol Hill – right across from the lawmakers themselves. As he puts it, "I started at the bottom and managed to work my way down." He began knowing little about politics, but was an immediate hit because he could find humor in anything. With impeccable timing, twinkling eyes and shock-of-recognition insights into American politics, Mark draws merriment from the pomposity of public life. Reading three or four newspapers a day allows him to constantly update his material. The result is that no two shows are ever identical. The American Theatre. 2:30 p.m. $30.00-$35.00. 757/722-2787. www.hamptonarts.net (125 East Mellen Street, Hampton, VA 23663)

Hampton History Museum. 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Free for museum members, $5.00 non-members. 757/727-1610. www.hamptonhistorymuseum.org (120 Old Hampton Lane, Hampton, VA 23669)

8 The Framers with Phillip Roebuck 2014 Veer Music Award winner for Album of the Year (Sunlight Fever) and for Best Emerging Artist, The Framers have been steadily building momentum through their exciting live performances and accessible brand of indie country rock. For the uninitiated, Roebuck doesn’t just play the banjo; he attacks it. His style is powerful and naturally percussive on its own, but he takes his craft to a different level by beating out a rhythm on a bass drum and tambourine he carries on his back and controls with straps connected to boot spurs. 9 ‘Perfessor’ Bill: Live Piano Accompaniment to Classic Silent Films Harpo Marx lasted just two weeks as a silent film pianist – and it's no wonder. The poor fellow only knew two songs which he would rotate, speeding up or slowing down his fingers in hopes of fitting the music to the action on the screen. Luckily, not all players had such limited repertoires, and The American Theatre has invited the talented 'Perfessor' Bill to sit at our Steinway piano and do what he does best: improvise a score to great silent movie classics, on the fly. At the keyboard Bill conjures music with an appropriate mood, or with tempos that comment waggishly on the scenes, accentuating hairpin plot twists to play along. The American Theatre. 2:30 p.m. $15.00-$20.00. 757/722-2787. www.hamptonarts.net (125 East Mellen Street, Hampton, VA 23663)
