Proudly Presents "SAN FRANCISCO ROCK ICON AUCTION" AUCTION PREVIEW: APRIL 17th - 22nd AUCTION GOES LIVE: APRIL 23rd - 30th On behalf of the entire Backstage Auctions Crew we would like to welcome you to the "SAN FRANCISCO ROCK ICON AUCTION". Months of hard work and dedication went into putting together a very unique auction featuring one-of-a-kind memorabilia spanning over 35 years of rock 'n roll history. Backstage Auctions would like to take the opportunity to thank our consignors who contributed their personal treasures to complete this amazing collection of memorabilia for this auction; Herbie Herbert (Santana, Steve Miller, Journey, Europe), Steve Parish (Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia), Bill Thompson (Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, Starship, Hot Tuna), Mark Sandoval (Ross Valory, Kevin Chalfant, George Tickner, Sy Klopps) and musicians Michael Shrieve (Santana, Rolling Stones, Pete Townshend, Steve Winwood) and Ross Valory (Journey, Frumious Bandersnatch, Steve Miller, Sy Klopps). To read more about our consignors please see our website for their bios and photos. We know you're excited and jumping at the bit to dive in, but before doing so, please take 2 minutes to read the "Helpful Hints and Suggestions" section below. It will greatly assist you in navigating through all the auction lots and hopefully address some of the questions you might already have. In all, thank you for visiting Backstage Auctions and your interest in the "SAN FRANCISCO ROCK ICON AUCTION". An auction like this is not likely to happen again anytime soon, so be sure to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to pick up a piece of music history. Rock On! Kelli & Jacques van Gool AUCTION INFORMATION, HELPFUL HINTS AND SUGGESTIONS *The auction will start Sunday, April 23 at 3:00 PM Eastern and all items will be open for bidding. The auction will be open for one week and begin the close process on Sunday, April 30 at 3:00 PM Eastern. * If you are not already registered, please sign up early (to get that part of the administration out of the way). Once you have completed the registration you will receive a password via email in order for you to "log in" for the first time. If you do not receive your Registration Confirmation Email, first check your "Junk or Spam Folder" and if you still didn't receive it, please contact us and one of our staff members will be happy to assist you. Now, once you have logged in you can change your password to something that you will better remember by simply going to the "My Account" area. Now, you are ready to rock and roll. *If you are new to Backstage Auctions we recommend that you take a few minutes and familiarize yourself with the AUCTION RULES section, which can be found under the “Resources” tab on our site. This section will help you understand all of the "mechanics" of how our auctions operate, i.e. buyer’s premium, payment options and shipping. While we are similar to other online auction companies we do operate differently in a few areas. *You can view the items by utilizing the categories found directly in the left frame of the auction page. Items can be accessed and viewed by selecting either ARTISTS, TYPE OF ITEM or DECADE. There may be items that are listed in several categories, so we recommend utilizing the AUCTION SEARCH function which can be found in the upper right corner of each auction page. The AUCTION SEARCH function will help you find pieces related to a specific band or musician or to search for a particular item’s LOT NUMBER. *The catalog is a text listing of all the auction lots and provides the Lot Number, Lot Title, Main and Secondary Category and Type of Item Category, all of which is extremely helpful in locating items quickly in the auction. If at anytime you need assistance in locating an item, we will be happy to help. * On Sunday, April 30th at 3:00 PM Eastern time (the official start of the auction end) our system will begin a 15 minute countdown. What this means is that the auction will REMAIN OPEN (even after the official 3:00 PM EST) for periods of 15 minutes until such time that no additional online, phone or fax bids are placed on any single item. PLEASE NOTE: Our auctions will typically continue past the close time for several hours. Take advantage of placing your maximum bids on the items you are interested in and keep an eye on those items as the auction begins to close. For more information and assistance on how our "Auction End" process works, please see our Auction Rules located in the "Resources" tab on our site. Alternatively, give us a call or drop us an email and one of our crew members will be happy to walk you through how the close process works. * As always, we aim to be as precise and complete as possible with our descriptions. That said, human error is always a possibility and we encourage you to ask questions and make inquiries on any piece that you are interested in prior to placing your bid. All auction descriptions ARE QUALIFIED STATEMENTS OF OPINION AND NOT REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES. * All photos and scans are made by Backstage Auctions, Inc. and are made directly from the actual pieces in the auction. Furthermore, we have watermarked all our images to protect these images. The watermarks do not appear on the actual auction items. *Since the entire auction features items that come directly from the artist or industry professional, provenance and authenticity is never in question. But to give you that extra peace of mind all items purchased in the auction comes with a signed certificate from the original owner, our consignor. *Due to circumstances beyond our control and our consignors control, a selection of recordings, acetates and test pressings are no longer available as originally previewed in the auction and previous versions of the catalog. We apologize for any inconvenience. * Last - but certainly not least - have FUN!!! This is going to be a memorable auction and we expect much traffic and heavy bidding. At times, the site might slow down a little bit but fear not; the auction will go on as long as bids are placed. Rock On! PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Garbage & the Temper Trap Join for Next Winery Series!
Media Release – Thursday July 28 GARBAGE & THE TEMPER TRAP JOIN FOR NEXT WINERY SERIES! With the Preatures, Tash Sultana and Adalita a day on the green has assembled an epic line-up for its next series of winery concerts. Alt-rock pioneers Garbage and Australia’s own multi-platinum chart toppers The Temper Trap will come together as part of their respective national tours for five outdoor events through November/December. The concerts will feature a stellar under-card with special guests The Preatures, Tash Sultana and Adalita. The five band bill kicks off at Victoria’s Rochford Wines on Saturday November 26. These will be the Garbage’s first Australian shows since 2013 and celebrate their acclaimed sixth studio album Strange Little Birds (out now via Liberator Music). To create Strange Little Birds, their first album in four years, Garbage (Shirley Manson, Steve Marker, Duke Erikson and Butch Vig) drew on a variety of influences including the albums they loved growing up. Upon its June release, the album debuted at #9 on the ARIA Album Chart and picked up widespread acclaim: ‘20-plus years after forming, each band member is still fired up to mine new sounds and approaches for inspiration. That willingness to be uncomfortable and look beneath the surface makes Strange Little Birds a rousing success.’ – The A.V. Club ‘The electronic rockers return with a sixth studio album as cool and caustic as their 1995 debut’ – NME ‘Garbage haven’t released an album this immediate, melodically strong and thematically interesting since their self-titled 1995 debut.’ – Mojo In support of the album’s release, Garbage performed a powerful two-song performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! – watch ‘Empty’ here and ‘Push It’ here.

  • 8-14-18 Todd Cochran SHORT
Todd Cochran – pianist, composer BIO The more avenues an artist can draw upon the more original their music will tend to sound. With years devoted to classical music study followed by the tutelage of American jazz masters, pianist and composer Todd Cochran’s music reflects a wide-ranging musical palette. In his art he has continued to build upon this foundation, incorporating diverse musical influences from the traditions of African and Asian diaspora, global pop, and contemporary art music culture. Todd's happenstance was to grow up in San Francisco during the civil rights era, a transformational time in America’s story. The city was multi-dimensional and the echoes of being a child of the cultural revolution have never left him. Garnering attention at a young age his associations with legendary musicians began when he was 17, playing and recording with, or composing for John Handy, Bobby Hutcherson, and Rashaan Roland Kirk. And while classical art music was always the foundation of his interest, early in Todd's career the rock band Santana re-recorded a composition from Todd's first solo album "Worlds Around The Sun." This became his entrée into the world of edgy electric underground and alternative music, ultimately leading to the formation of the innovative band Automatic Man. Todd's work as a pianist, composer and electronic musician has significantly influenced others. A short list of his collaborations include Herbie Hancock, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Maya Angelou, Joan Armatrading, Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Clarke, Stewart Copeland, Hubert Laws, Jeff Beck, Burt Bacharach, Stan Getz, Natalie Cole, Neil Diamond, and Rod Stewart.
