Jackson Hole was recognized as an outdoor paradise by the native Americans that first explored the area thousands of years before the first white mountain men stumbled upon the valley. These lucky first inhabitants were here to hunt, fish, trap and explore the rugged terrain and enjoy the abundance of natural resources. As the early white explorers trapped, hunted and mapped the region, it didn’t take long before word got out and tourism in Jackson Hole was born. Urbanites from the eastern cities made their way to this remote corner of northwest Wyoming to enjoy the impressive vistas and bounty of fish and game in the name of sport. These travelers needed guides to the area and the first trappers stepped in to fill the niche. Over time dude ranches were built to house and feed the guests in addition to roads, trails and passes through the mountains. With time newer outdoor pursuits were being realized including rafting, climbing and skiing. Today Jackson Hole is home to two of the world’s most famous national parks, world class skiing, hiking, fishing, climbing, horseback riding, snowmobiling and wildlife viewing all in a place that has been carefully protected allowing guests today to enjoy the abundance experienced by the earliest explorers. -

Candidate, Wyoming Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit, University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyoming 82071 PROJECT BACKGROUND The Teton Range bighorn sheep herd resides year-round at high elevations in Grand Teton National Park and on the Bridger- Teton and Caribou-Targhee National Forests. Although the herd historically wintered at lower elevations in Jackson Hole and Teton Basin, they now winter exclusively in wilderness areas at high elevation on windswept ridges and slopes. It is Wyoming’s smallest and most isolated native herd- a remnant population of approximately 100-150 sheep derived from a much larger bighorn sheep complex that historically lived in northwest Wyoming. Unlike many other bighorn sheep herds in the Rocky Mountain West, the Teton herd has yet to undergo a transplant to augment population size. However, the population’s hold on the future is tenuous, owing to its small size, genetic isolation from surrounding herds, and the combined effects of loss of historic winter ranges, habitat Figure 1. Project study area. alteration due to fire suppression, and potential impacts by increasing winter backcountry recreation. Much of the current information regarding these threats and the status of this native population is incomplete. The data from our study will provide the most extensive and complete picture of bighorn sheep habitat use, seasonal distribution, movement, and recruitment (lamb survival) in the Teton Range to date. -

Chronic Wasting Disease Surveillance Jackson Elk Herd Unit 2015 Report prepared for the National Elk Refuge, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Prepared by Ben Wise, Brucellosis-Feedground-Habitat Biologist, WGFD February 18th, 2016 ____________________________________________________________________________________ The National Elk Refuge (NER) provided funds to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) to support Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance in the Jackson elk herd and adjacent elk, deer, and moose herds during the 2015 hunting seasons. The funding was used to hire two temporary CWD technicians, one employed with the WGFD, and one employed by the National Elk Refuge from mid- September through December 2015. The WGFD technician logged 800 hours and 10,000 miles, mostly while conducting field contacts with hunters and pulling samples (medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes) from carcasses. Having two technicians allowed field presence nearly every day of open hunting seasons in the Jackson area, and helped maximize the number of samples collected from all species throughout the Jackson WGFD Region. The highest yielding method of collecting elk samples for subsequent CWD testing in the Jackson region comes from hunter contacts in the field, especially those within Grand Teton National Park (GTNP) and the NER. Hunter contacts are made throughout the fall in an effort to increase sample size and participation, and to educate hunters on CWD. NER parking areas and highly used locations in GTNP, such as the Kelly Hayfields and Blacktail Butte, are reliable places to make hunter contacts and collect samples. Frequent communication among NER law enforcement, elk retrieval operators and other WGFD personnel is essential for locating successful hunters soon after they’ve harvested their elk. -
